of the Bay of Quinte There are several Quackenbush pioneers to Upper Canada and it is hoped that by studying their movement from NY some light will be shed on other families. Reynard, Peter, Isaac and Jannetje [#2,3,4,5 below] are most likely siblings, though I have not seen a Canadian record in support of this to date. The Peter Quackenbush that is #6 below is distantly related to this family. The excellent volume, The Quackenbush Family in America is referenced in #1 below. 1. Children of Reynier Quackenbush and Catherine Waldron OVERVIEW The Quackenbush Family in America by Gail Richard Quackenbush, Henington Pub, Texas, 1987, [copy at NYCL in Toronto] is a comprehensive work of 885 pages. The book is available online for those signed in at familysearch.org. From it we read that Reynier Quackenbush and Catherine Waldron lived in Rockland NY just up the Hudson from Manhattan and five of their children are said to have come to Upper Canada [in yellow]. We are trying to locate supportive contemporary documentation. There is an older book, The Quackenbush Family in Holland and America, Adriana Suydam Quackenbush, 1909 and referred to as QFH&A below. Cindy Winkler's extensive web site on the Quackenbush Family Page appears to have all the lineages that are in the above volume but does not include the notes and citations. I have included links to the lineages in a few cases below. Below is a detailed account from a posting on the Lennox Addington board "...There was much dissention within the Dutch Reformed Churches in Pre-revolutionary America, and the Church at Tappan was one where the schism between the conservative forces, favouring control and the training of clergy remain with the mother church in Amsterdam, Holland, and the liberal forces, favouring the right to train and ordain ministers in America, was paticularly full of rancour. In 1761, a number from the Tappan Church refused to pay the Dominie's salary and began attending other Dutch Reformed churches in the area where the Dominies were conservative. In the case of Reynier, note that daughter, Catrina, was batized at the Paramus Church in 1762, and sons, Pieter and Isaac, at the Schraalenburgh Church in 1764 and 1766. The Paramus Church was located in present Ridgewood and the Schrallenburgh Church in present Bergenfield, both in Bergen County, N. J. Seceeding members of the Tappan Reformed Church established their own "Schismatic" Church. This "Irregular" Church at Tappan, as it was called, remained until 1779, after the Revolution. Reynier and Catharine were listed as members in 1768, and their yougnest two daughters were baptized within this break-away church. Later, Reynier and Catharine moved to Hempstead, Rockland County, NY, and they were admitted to the Kakiat Dutch Reformed Church in West New Hempstead in 1790. Reynier was elected an Elder in this church in 1793. Many members of the conservative "Irregular" Church at Tappan were British supporters, or at least sympathizers. Reynier did sign a modified Haverstraw Patriot Association in 1775, but his son-in-law's father, Jan Post neglected or refused to do so. Frederick Post, who married (Reynier's) Anna Elizabeth, the eldest daughter, fought for the British in the King's Orange Rangers, and it is likely that this Post family was the first of Reynier's line to come to Canada. Johannes and Jacob lost their lives while serving in the King's Orange Rangers. Of the sons, only Abraham and Cornelius remained in New York, as Reynier, Peter and Issaac all followed the Post family to the Napanee area of Ontario. Of the daughters, Catrina remained in New York, but Jannetje, who had married John Snyder, followed her elder sister to Ontario. Margrietye may have died young or at least remained a spinster....the sons changed the spelling [of their names] to Quackenbush ..." 2. Reynard Quackenbush of Fredericksburgh OVERVIEW Reynard Quackenbush first shows up in the land abstracts of Fredericksburgh Township in 1803 where he gets Lot 3 in Concession 3 from the Crown. Peter Quakenbush, similarly shows up on Lot 10, Con 3 in 1804 and they are probably brothers. The unusual thing is that no petitions have been found for Reynard or Peter and also their grant does not show up in the OLRI. Likely they settled sometime in the late 1790's, leased land and finally bought land abt. 1804. Reynard is claimed to have died in 1814 and then Lot 3 passes into the hands of Peter, Reynard and John Quackenbush; likely his sons or grandsons. Nicholas S and James Quackenbush are witnesses. This Reynier (1759 - 1814) is likely the son of Reynier Quackenbush and Catherine Waldron as described in #1 above who married Maria Forshee. The Quackenbush Family in America [79] has this to say about Reynard "Reynier (or Rynard) Quackenbush probably moved to Canada about 1792. On 28 Dec. 1803, he received a grant of 200 acres of land on Lot 3, Concession 3, currently in North Fredericksburgh Township, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario. The 1808 Assessment Roll of Fredericksburgh (Township) lists a Rennard Quackenbush with 65 acres of uncultivated land, 45 acres of cultivated land, a log house, three horses, nine cows and three swine. Rynard purchased the west half of Lot 15, Concession 4, North Fredericksburgh Township on 5 Jan. 1811. Stickle, were charged with possessing the equipment to make American half dollars and Canadian twenty cent pieces and making counterfeit coin. They came before a jury in a Belleville Court in March 1866. There is a detailed article in the Globe dated Mar 28, 1866. Andrew Potter, one of the counterfeiters, turned Queen's evidence. The jury found them guilty and James Quackenbush "was to be confined for three years, and Stickle for two years, in the Provincial Pentiteniary." Reynard Quackenbush died during the trial on Mar 26, 1866 while in jail in Kingston. Kayla states that Reynard died "apparently after being roughed up by his captors." 3. Peter Quackenbush of Fredericksburgh OVERVIEW Peter Quackenbush first shows up in the land abstracts of Fredericksburgh Township in 1804 where he gets Lot 10 in Concession 3 from the Crown. Reynard Quakenbush, similarly shows up on Lot 3, Con 3 in 1803 and they are probably brothers. The unusual thing is that no petitions have been found for Peter or Reynard and also their grant does not show up in the OLRI. A number of reserachers have identified the Peter below, b 1764, as the same man. It is likely true but as yet no early record connects them explicitly. A will in 1814 has not been found. This Peter (1764 - 1814) is likely the son of Reynier Quackenbush and Catherine Waldron as described in #1 above who married Maria Pulisfelt The Quackenbush Family in America [80] has this to say about Peter: "Peter and Maria Quackenbush probably moved to Canada soon after their daughter Catheryna was baptized at the Kakiat Reformed Dutch Church in Rockland County, New York, in 1795. There is no record in New York of the baptism of their son Andrew, born about 1798. On 25 Feb. 1804, Peter, along with his brother Isaac, was granted 200 acres of land on Lot 10 of the Third Concession, Fredericksburgh Township, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario. The 1808 Assessment Roll of Fredericksburgh lists Peter with 160 uncultivated acres, 40 cultivated acres, a square timber house, two horses, eight cows and three swine. Peter's will was proved in 1814 with letters of administration granted to Mary Quackenbush, executrix. There is some evidence to suggest that Mary moved to Hillier Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario, to be with her son Rynard, who had settled there about 1822. Her name is on a stone in Burr's Old United Empire Loyalist Burying Ground, Hillier Township. Although the inscription gives Peter's date of death as 1830, this may actually be his widow's death date. Ref: Presbyterian Register of Rev. The indenture makes no mention of how Cyraus Parks obtained the land. This suggests that Peter died before 1825 and the land passed into other hands. Cyranus Parks could be a son in law. Her mother was a sister of Andrew Wannamaker the Pioneer of Massassaga and a cousin of Peter Redner Sr., my maternal grandfather. 4. Isaac Quackenbush of Ameliasburgh OVERVIEW The Issac who buys land in 1824 could be either the father or the son. This land is near the Snider and Frederick families. I have not located Isaac in Cindy Winkler's database. The Quackenbush Family in America [80] has this to say about Isaac: "The records of the Kakiat Reformed Dutch Church, Rockland County, New York, indicate that "Isaac Q'bos and Cornelius Pules, his wife" were received into membership on 13 Apr. 1803. They must have moved to Canada shortly after the baptism of their daughter Catharina there on 30 Oct. 1803, as on 25 Feb. 1804, Isaac, along with his brother Peter, was granted 200 acres of land on Lot 10, Third Concession, Fredericksburgh Township, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario. Isaac bought Lot 76, Fourth Concession, Ameliasburgh Township of Prince Edward County, Ontario, on 8 Mar. 1824. He probably moved there about 1822, as in that year his brother Peter settled in nearby Hillier Township. Also, on May 15th of that year, Isaac's son Isaac, Jr. was listed in the nominal returns of the 2nd Regiment of the Prince Edward Militia. On 26 Nov. 1833, Isaac sold 50 acres of his Ameliasburgh Township farm to William Massey. In Isaac's will dated 14 Dec. 1830, mention is made of his wife Cornelia, sons Isaac and Andrew, and daughter Katherine. The will was registered in the Ameliasburgh Township land records on 28 June 1836. 6. Peter Quackenbush of Murray, Clarke and South Gower Townships OVERVIEW This Peter is much travelled and NOT to be confused with the Fredericksburgh crowd above. In 1797 he is in Murray Township when he petitions as a settler and is granted 200 acres in Clarke Township in Durham County north of Port Hope. In 1799 he again petitions from Edwardsburgh in Glengarry County near Cornwall that he has sold his Clarke land. In 1803 he petitions for land in South Gower and in 1811 an OLRI record states he is now living in South Gower Township, Grenville County. He is a distant cousin of the above family and his grandfather had moved the family to Fonda (near Schenectady) NY. The 1817 petiton below names some of the people that settled as a group. Peter Quackenbush is not a Loyalist. The Quackenbush Family in America [105] has this to say about Peter: "Family records in possession of Mrs. John P. Quackenbush of Mohawk, New York, tell of Peter's departure for Canada: "When a young man he ran a race with an Indian, he won the race and it so angered the Indian, he threatened to kill Peter. Then Peter ran away to Canada, for safty [sic], and never returned. He was never heard from again." Peter first appears in Canadian records about 1800, along with his father-in-law, Cornelius Van Waters, in a series of petitions to the Crown for land grants. Peter became a farmer in Grenville County, Ontario. The 1848 census shows him owning 25 acres of land, with 19 acres under tillage and 4 acres in pasture. Peter belonged to the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Ref: Upper Canada Land Petitions; Records of Ron Crowe, Toronto, Ontario; Assessment Rolls of South Cower Township, Grenville Co., Ontario; 1851 and 1861 census of Oxford Township, Grenville Co., Ontario" The Quackenbush Family in America [23] has this to say about the grandfather of the above Peter, also named Peter: "He was an early settler of the Mohawk Valley, dealt extensively with the natives and became known as "The Old Indian Trader." The following incident in his life is recorded in Women of the Revolution: "Pieter Quackenboss was among the early settlers of the Montgomery County, and did not escape the difficulties. He was a trader with the Indians, who placed great confidence in him, frequently consulting him. They were disposed to bestow on him some particular mark of regard, and after meeting for consultation, they decided on giving him the name 'Otsego' and christening the lake for him. The ceremony of naming both him and the lake was performed by pouring liquor upon his head as he knelt on the ground, a portion being afterwards poured into the water. It is probable that few are acquainted with this origin of the name of Otsego Lake; but that family tradition has been confirmed by the recollection of some who witnessed the occurrence." Peter and Sarah Quackenboss were admitted by confession of faith to the Fonda DRC on 21 Dec. 1771. Peter evidently died not long after that, as letters of administration were issued on 23 Dec. 1774 in the estate of Peter Quackenbush of Butlersbury, Tryon County, New York, to Sarah Quackenbush, his wife, and David Quackenbush, both of Butlersbury. Witnesses were Bryan Leferty and Walter Butler. Ref: QFH&A, p. 47; CNYHS (1899), Vol. 8, p. 374; Genealogical Data from Administration Papers (1972), p. 255" PETITION - 1817 petition naming those Peter emigrated with in 1797. "I, Jacob Mills of Augusta in the District of Johnstown, Labourer and Peter Quackenbush of South Gower in the said District, yeoman, ser.....make oath and say that David Wilcox Junior of Johnstown did in the month of May, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety-Eight (1798) brought thirteen settlers into the Province, that is to say, Jacob Mills, Reuben Lewis/Louis, Peter Quackenbush, Harmanus Quackenbush, Corneilus Van Waters, George Reid, Jonathan Mills, Jonas Walrod, David Wilcox Sr., Elias Wilcox, Samuel Lewis/Louis, Abel Wilcox, Joshua Wilcox, and their deportments further say that the said persons came into the Province as settlers through the influence and under the direction of the said David Wilcox Junior. Signed by Jacob Mills, one of the above deportments, sworn before me the 5th. day of July 1817.....(signed) Thomas Fraser. Note: The above Peter Quackenbush had a brother Hermanus [see Quackenbush Family in America [106]] though he is not recorded as coming to Canada. They all claimed no prior grants had been received but Peter Quackenbush and two others were exempted from the recommended grant until proof of no prior grant had been received. The 29 given permission paid 5 pounds each. A report suggested a rule be made about persons moving onto waste lands without permission and that severe penalties should result. In this case Allan Paterson, who was agent, had to swear that all men actually resided on the land and have not conveyed or incumbered the land.
