of the Bay of Quinte My main Saylor page Peter Saylor (b. 1794 in Pennsylvania) and his wife Elizabeth Lapp (b. 1798 in Virginia) settled in Willoughby Township before 1818 when their first child was born. Willoughby Township is along the Niagara River, just north of Fort Erie. The three main questions are: 1. Why, when and with whom did Peter come to Upper Canada? 2. Can we find a contemporary record to verify that the Lapp family came from Rockingham County, Virginia? 3. Is there any connection between Peter Saylor and the Charles Saylor family who settled in the Quinte area? New tests of Y-DNA now confirm there is no connection between these two family lineages. See the DNA section below for details. This is not meant to be an exhaustive attempt at posting all the descendants. I will post the children with source notes and a few of their children (ie: the grandchildren) of Peter and Elizabeth. In 2012, Ted Smith, a descendant of this family, shared a file of Peter's family with me and this got me going to dig deeper into Peter Saylor. Also, Debra Kinzie, James Climenhage and Linda Lapp Young have been very helpful with information about the Lapp family. Thanks to John Saylor for his very informative Y-DNA test. Much thanks to Norm Findlay who in Oct. 2015 came forward with information cementing Esther, Isaac and Elizabeth as children of Peter Saylor and Elizabeth Lapp. © Randy Saylor, 2006, major updates Nov 2012, Oct 2013, Dec 2014, Oct 2015 |

1. OVERVIEW Peter Saylor is buried in the Lapp Cemetery in Willoughby Township along with his wife Elizabeth Lapp. The headstones inform us that Peter died 10 May 1862, aged 67 Years 9 m's & 1 day [therefore b. 9 Aug 1794]. His wife, Elizabeth Lapp was born in 1798 in Virginia and died 26 July 1874. Various records state that Peter was born in the US and the 1842 Willoughby census states Pennsylvania as his state of origin. Ulrich Seiler, 1738 In Dec 2014, Y-DNA test results confirmed that Peter Saylor is a direct descendant of Ulrich Seiler, a Palatine German, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1738 on the ship Catherine. See the Y DNA section below for more details. Lapps are from Virginia Elizabeth's death registration states that she was born in Virginia. Issac Lapp, brother of Elizabeth was born in Virginia in 1809 and family were still in Virginia in 1809. Brothers Samuel and Martin Lapp migrate to Illinois and in later census records state they were born in Virginia. So this Lapp family came from Virginia sometime after 1809. Debra Kinzie, a descendant of Samuel Lapp, a brother of Elizabeth, reports that the Lapps came from Rockingham County in Virginia. Elizabeth's father, Abraham Lapp is buried in the Lapp Cemetery along with some of the rest of the Lapp family. In the 1810 Virginia census for Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co. there is an Abraham Lapp and a family with the Saylor surname. Could it be that Peter Saylor came from there as well? In the 1842 census Peter is said to have come from PA so that may in fact be the case. However, Debra Kinzie has done some excellent work to possibly connect the Lapps to Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, VA. Whistler, Lapp in Rockingham Debra writes, "I looked at the 1842 Canadian Census and used the information that Abraham Lapp had moved to Ontario 26 years before, about 1816, and that he was born in PA. We know he was from VA and the PA is an error. Just beneath the listing for Abraham Lapp is Abraham Whistler (age 45, single, living with Abraham Lapp and probably a brother in law of Magdelene) and then Magdelene Whistler, widow, 26 years in Ontario. I had previously tentatively listed Magdelene Lapp as a daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth, and this seems to add credence." Rockingham records Now Magdalene Lapp married Jacob Whistler on 28 Aug 1810 in Rockingham, VA. Examining the 1810 Rockingham census we see that on 3 consecutive pages we have John Saylor with the slight problem that there is no young son, Abraham Lapp with his family and then John Whisler with a son 26 to 45. In August Jacob Whisler marries Magdalene Lapp. This is a strong suggestion that Jacob and Magdalene [Lapp] Whisler came to Canada from Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA, with the Abraham Lapp family 26 years before in 1816 with possibly Peter Saylor in tow. The working hypothesis It appears that the Lapp's arrived in Upper Canada from Rockingham, VA, sometime after 1810, probably around 1816 after the War or 1812. Peter Saylor may also have come with his parents as he would be 15 about 1810. No record of any parents has been found. Perhaps he came after the War of 1812 in 1815. The 1842 Willoughby census suggests Peter may have come as early as 1806 at age 12 but this is considered an error. Regardless, Abraham, the oldest child of Peter Saylor and Elizabeth Lapp is born in Willoughby Township, in 1818. So by this time Peter and Elizabeth are settled and married. Religion can be a guide to help figure out how Peter and Elizabeth arrived in Upper Canada. In the 1851 census Peter is stated as being of "no sect" and Elizabeth is an "Evangelist". In 1861 both Peter and Elizabeth are stated to be "Other Methodists". In later census data a number of the children are United Brethren, Tunkers and Mennonite. It does not appear that Peter arrived in Canada and settled with a specific religious group. However Debra Kinzie writes that the Lapps were Swiss Mennonites. The United Brethren are an offshoot of the Mennonites and there was an active Mennonite/Brethren community in and around Willoughby and Bertie Townships where these families lived. I am not certain, but I suspect the term "evangelist" also suggests an Anabaptist root that may imply the whole extended family was active within the broader Mennonite community. It is not clear that Peter Saylor migrated with a religious group. I will check the book A Brief History of Mennonites in Ontario, Lewis J Burkholder, Toronto, Livingstone Press, 1935 to see if Mennonites in the area are mentioned. Two sons of Abraham Lapp emigrated to Stephenson Co., Illinois and established a Mennonite church there. No free land grant Peter did not petition for land as a settler or claimant of any sort nor is he listed in the index to the Ontario Land Books so he did not receive a free land grant of any kind. The land records for Willoughby and Bertie Townships have been checked and Peter is not found buying land or being involved in a mortgage. In the 1842 Willoughby censusPeter is recorded as a "proprietor" and thus probably a tenant with a lease as no deed record has been found. In the 1861 census, Peter is farming his son's farm, lot 17, concession 3, Willoughby Township. Norm Findlay has challenged this interpreation thinking proprietor means owner. This record will be checked again [Oct 2015]. Why did Peter not buy any land? Some of his children bought farms from 1852 to 1854 and an analysis of these purchases is in section 7 below. We do get a partial answer to the question in a petition and a commission report in 1842. Peter is likely a "poor German." If Peter arrived after the war of 1812 about 1816, he would have been caught up in the Alien Question. As an American, Peter would not have been allowed to take the oath of allegiance and therefore would have been denied the ability to get a grant of land as a settler. He would have to buy a farm. It may be that he worked the Lapp farm as a tenant. The Upper Canada Sundries have quite a few alien lists and a search of the massive index does not show a list from Willoughby Township. Regardless, Peter is the lead signatory of the above 1842 petition with 17 other german inhabitants of Willoughby, complaining about the lumbering on lots 7 to 11, con 4. Go to section 5A and 5B to see the full set of documents. These lots were leased by Gilbert McMicking in 1835 to be improved and the accusation was that his cutting diminished the value of the land. However a friend of McMicking's writes a long letter of support saying he built a steam mill and needed fuel. He also states that McMicking leased 50 acre lots to "a few poor Germans". This has to apply to Peter and the other inhabitants who signed the petition. In 1852, Samuel Saylor, a son of Peter, buys 50 acres of lot 7 in con 4. Samuel Street was a wealthy figure in the Niagara area at this time and he was granted much of Willoughby Township. Probably he leased out some of the land. The index to the Samuel Street Fonds (F 547) at the Archives of Ontario is on line and very lengthy. Click on "view an online list of these records." Perhaps Peter Saylor is named as a tenant of Samuel Street. A quick examination of the index of the Fonds did not show a list of tenants or book of rents for Willoughby. In conclusion, what can we say about Peter Saylor? Peter Saylor is a grandson or great grandson of Ulrich Seiler, a Palatine German, who arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Catherine in 1738. Peter was born in the US in 1794, in Pennsylvania, to unknown parents, where the Saylor surname developed. I have a hard time accepting the 1842 census suggestion that he came in 1806 as a 12 year old. I feel it is more likely that he came to Upper Canada by himself or with friends or extended family shortly after the War of 1812 at age 18 in search of cheap land. Probably he was poor and unable to take the oath of allegiance to get a grant as a settler due to the Alien Act. He may have hired himself out to work on a farm - perhaps the Lapp farm. He married Elizabeth Lapp and they had their first child, Abraham, in 1818. For some reason, Peter never acquired title to a farm. Perhaps he had a trade such as a carpenter though he is listed as a farmer in the 1851 census. He showed some mettle by leading a group of petitioners in 1842 over the destruction of the value of land. In the ensuing papers it appears he and other inhabitants may have leased 50 acre lots of this block of land and are said to be "poor germans." One of his sons buys a 50 acre lot in this block in 1852. His children all purchase farms in the early 1850's. None of the family members were granted land. Peter does not appear to be an overly religious fellow as he is described as of "no sect" in the 1851 census. The other members of the family lean toward United Brethren, Evangelical and the Mennonite religion. Peter dies in 1862 and is buried in the Lapp Cemetery in Willoughby Tp. Back to top |
2. Y DNA TEST RESULTS - New Dec 2014 The magic of DNA testing has allowed us to conclude that Peter Saylor is a direct descendant from Ulrich Seiler, Palatine German, who arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Catherine in 1738. Given that Peter was born about 1794, it is likely he is a grandson or great grandson of Ulrich. We do not know the names of the connecting generations. John Saylor who lives in the Niagara area of Ontario, descends directly from Peter Saylor via his son Henry. John had his Y-DNA tested in the fall of 2014 and the results matched 36 out 37 markers with another man who lives in the USA. This man can trace his line directly back to Ulrich Seiler of the Catherine. The fact that we have two strong matches now confirms that we have identified the Y DNA of the Ulrich Seiler line and others who match will be able to make the same conclusion. To see the DNA results, visit the Saylor DNA project and scroll down to Group 9 test results and click on the "9". On this page you will see reference to a scarce document called Ulrich Seiler Descendants compiled by Samuel J. Saylor and published in Dallastown, PA, 1989. Ship lists to Philadelphia that have Saylor/Sailer/Seiler passengers are presented here on this separate web page. Scroll down to ship list 51. The actual ship list did not survive but the Oath of Allegiance to the King (list B) and the Oath of Abjuration from the Pope (list C) have survived for this ship. The slight difference in spelling is a result of the fact that the oaths were taken from two separate clerks who recorded the information at two different tables side by side. Ulrich Sr is likely the father of Hans and Ulrich Jr and none of these men could sign their name - thus marks were made. Being designated as Palatine Germans means they came from the Palatinate area along the Rhine. Extract from the book, Ulrich Seiler Descendants The author, Samuel J. Saylor informs us that Ulrich Seiler Sr died in Lancaster County, PA, in 1740. Place of burial is unknown. Ulrich Jr. married Mary Catharine Schmid, dau. of Henry Scmid, and they had 3 children; Christian, Mary Elizabeth and Benedict. Lancaster court records state that Ulrich Jr, widower, linen weaver, married Elizabeth Guisie or Geesey, dau. of Jacob. They were married 16 Apr 1750 at First Reformed Ch., Lancaster, PA. According to New Holland, Lancaster Co. church records, Elizabeth was born in 1734. There were 3 brothers; Philip, John and Henry. Ulrich Jr settled in York Co. immediately following his 2nd marriage as the first child, Peter, was christened in 1753 at Christ Lutheran Church, York, PA. Ulrich Jr and Elizabeth had 8 children; Peter, Catherine, Casper, Barbara, William, George, Henry & Ulrich. Ulrich Jr died in 1771 and his burial site is unknown. A research possibility is to examine York, PA church records for a birth of Peter Saylor about 1794. |
3. 1842 CENSUS of WILLOUGHBY TOWNSHIP In Oct 2013, James Climenhage made me aware of the 1842 census of Willoughby Tp. This census provides valuable information and is placed early in the web page due to its importance. ANALYSIS Below is a transcription of the information recorded in this census about the Sayler and Lapp and Whisler families of Willoughby Township. As with all early census data there are possible errors so we have to be careful in our acceptance of what is recorded. One of the columns of data is titled "years in Province when not native thereof." I am not 100% clear on what this is supposed to mean. Peter Sayler is recorded as "36 years in Province when not native thereof." Does this mean that he came 36 years earlier in 1806 at age 12 when he was not a native by birth in Upper Canada? Peter's son Abraham Sayler has no entry under this column so can we assume that he was thus born in Upper Canada and native. However Abraham is listed as an "alien" conflicting with the interpretation. If Peter is not an alien then why is his son an alien? Read this web page about the alien question. Both Abraham Lapp and his son Issac record that they have been "26 years in the Province when not native thereof" - giving an arrival year of 1816 which is right after the War of 1812 and in the middle of the alien crisis. Neither is listed as an alien. Could it be that the 36 for Peter Sayler is an error and 26 years is the correct number? The census conflicts in naming the US state where the Lapp's came from. Abraham Lapp and Peter Saylor are said to be from Pennsylvania. Issac Lapp is recorded as from Virginia and Abraham Sayler has no state or country of origin named. Records of a number of Abraham Lapp's children (Isaac, Elizabeth, Martin and Samuel) state they are born in Virginia and we have assumed that the father Abraham came from VA. James Climenhage speculated that if Peter Saylor came from Pennsylvania then he may have come from Conestoga and Martic Townships in Lancaster County in PA given that many settlers in Willoughby and Bertie Townships came from there. Certainly eastern PA at the time was where most of the Saylor folk resided. The name "Saylor" is mentioned as one of the original Niagara settlers in The Trail of the Black Walnut by George Elmore Reaman, 1957, about the german migration from Pennsylvania to Niagara. One problem with Peter Sayler arriving at age 12 in 1806 is that no record has been found naming a potential father or mother. If he was orphaned, he could have come as a labourer with a family - perhaps the Lapps. Does the fact that Isaac Lapp records that he came from PA suggest that the family stayed a while in PA on their way from VA? It is the presence of widow Magdalene Whisler that is maybe the key to connect to Rockingham Co, VA. Magdalene Lapp marries Jacob Whisler later in 1810 and the families live close to each other. See the conclusion in the overiew that links the 1810 census date from VA with this 1842 census in Willoughby. 1842 WILLOUGHBY CENSUS * Abraham Lapp, (image 3 of 18), proprietor, farmer, 4 in family, 1 native of Canada of British origin,1 native of Pennsylvania, 26 years in Province when not native thereof, 1 female 5 to 14, 1 male 21 to 30, 1 married male 60 upwards, 1 married female 45 to 60, 63 acres occupied, 55 clear,100 wheat, 400 oats, 54 corn, 77 buck wheat, 140 potatoes, 6 cattle, 1 horse, 4 hogs, Deed *Abraham Whisler, not a proprietor and living with Abraham Lapp, PA, single, age 45 upwards. *Magdalene Whisler, widow, proprietor, 5 in family, 4 native of Canada, 1 native of Pennsylvania, 26 years in Province when not native thereof, 2 female 5 to 14, 1 single 14 not 21, 1 single 45 upwards [The 3 above entries are one after the other.] Abraham Sayler, (image 5 of 18), non proprietor, labourer, 4 in family, 4 native of Canada of British origin, alien, 2 males under 5, 1 male 21 to 30 married, 1 female 14 to 45 married, 2 Evangelical Association Methodist, no acreage occupied. 6 cattle, 3 sheep, 1 hog, 13 yds fulled, 9 lbs wood Peter Sayler, (image 5 of 18), proprietor, farmer, 7 in family, 6 of British origin, 1 from Pennsylvania, 36 years in Province when not native thereof [thus arrived 1806], 1 male under 5 [Benjamin], 1 male 5 to 14 [Isaac], 2 female over 5 to14 [Judith + ??], 1 male single 15 to 21 [Henry], 1 female 14 to 45 married [Eliz], 1 female 14 to 45 single [??], 3 A Methodist, 115 acres occupied, 35 clear, 150 wheat, 70 barley, 200 oats, 50 peas, 10 corn,100 potatoes, 2 bee hives, 12 cattle, 4 horses, 14 sheep, 10 hogs, 15 yds fulled cloth, 19 yds thin cloth, 30 Lbs wood, Bond Isaac Lapp, (image 5 of 18), Proprietor, Farmer, 6 in family, 5 of British origin, 1 from Virginia, 26 years in Province when not native thereof, 1 male under 5, 1 female under 5, 2 males 5 to 14, 1 male 30 to 60 married, 1 female 114 to 45 married, 2 Menonist, 67 acres occupied, 33 clear, 150 wheat, 250 barley, 800 oats, 39 peas, 45 buck wheat, 300 potatoes, 6 bee hives,14 cattle, 4 horses, 8 sheep, 16 hogs, 15 yds linen, 25 yds flannel, 20 wool, deed Source: 1842 Canada West Census, Lincoln, Niagara, Willoughby, LAC, C-1344. 4. THE LAPP FAMILY It appears that Abraham Lapp and his family emigrated from Rockingham County, Virginia to Willoughby Township sometime shortly after 1810. Abraham was born abt 20 Mar 1764 and died 23 Apr 1844. I place them here as they may have come to Upper Canada before Peter Saylor. His daughter, Elizabeth married Peter Saylor. Three of his sons are presented below. The Lapp surname is part of the early Mennonite community in Pennsylvania, suggesting a possible link to Abraham Lapp. Abraham's sons, Martin and Samuel, migrated to Stephenson County, Illinois and established a Mennonite Church. Another son, Isaac, remained in Upper Canada. See section 3D below for more on the Mennonite connection. DEBRA KINZIE Debra Kinzie is actively working on this family. She writes that "I have tentatively listed Magdelene Lapp as a daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth. She married Jacob Whistler on 28 Aug 1810 in Rockingham, VA - this Jacob Whistler is not the son of Henry Whisler and Ann Seegrist, but possibly part of another Whistler (Whisler, Whissler) family that lived nearby. I have also recently tentatively linked another daughter to Abraham and Elizabeth Lapp - Mary Ann, who married Gabriel Morningstar (Morgenstern). Ontario Deaths show her as born in Virginia about 1808, which would match up as a younger Lapp daughter, and her Find A Grave memorial is Maryann Lapp Morgenstern. The Haldimand/Sherbrooke/Northumberland Lapps seem to be a different family, though probably related somehow. I doubt that the Abraham Lapp who died in Clarence, NY was a son of Abraham and Elizabeth. Perhaps he was of the Haldimand family? Samuel married a Hershey (we have traced back to the 16th century persecutions in Switzerland -Herschi) and Christian married a Brubaker - (we have traced back to the Palatinate (Ibersheim). I’d very much like to find where the Lapps entered the US or Canada. 4E. Mennonite and United Brethern in Christ Records There is a good chance that Abraham Lapp and family came to Upper Canada from their Mennonite or Anabaptist roots in Virginia. No record has yet been found stating that Abraham and Elizabeth Lapp were Mennonite or United Brethern. However, their children and the Saylor children are listed as Brethern, Evangelical or Mennonite in later census reports. Thanks to Laureen Harding-Gissing, Archivisit and Librarian of the Mennonite Archives at Conrad Grabel University College, Waterloo, Ontario for suggesting the links below.

4F. Other Lapp families in the area There are at least two other Lapp families who settled nearby at this early time. The presence of the name Abraham in the children suggests a connection to Abraham Lapp b. 1764 of Willoughby Tp. The notes below come from two records held at the Canadian Mennonite Archives at Conrad Grabel College, part of the University of Waterloo, ON.
The record states that a Johannes Lapp came to America on the ship "Mary" landing at Philadelphia on 29 Sep 1733. This ship is not yet transcribed on the Palatine Project. Johannes (John) Lapp settled at Line Lexington near Doylestown, Bucks Co., PA. The Line Lexington Mennonite Church dates back to colonial times. There are a number of Lapps intered in the cemetery there. The record states that a Jacob Lapp (b. 1764 - d. 1851) came to Upper Canada and suggests he was buried in the Lapp Cemetery in Willoughby but modern transcriptions do not show Jacob named. This record claims his wife is Elizabeth, the same woman buried in the Lapp Cemetery and possibly the wife of Abraham Lapp. Source: Lapp, Martin Family compiled by Lapp, James Harris. LAND RECORDS No land record, purchase, grant or mortgage has been found to exist for Peter Saylor in Willoughby or Bertie Township land records. The abstract index of each lot, the index at the front of the copybooks and the Township Papers have been examined. It is rare to find an early settler who did not get land. It is possible he was a tenant but most settlers worked hard to avoid tenancy and much preferred to free hold land. 7. PETER SAYLER & LAND RECORDS Peter Sayler is the lead petitioner in the extensive record below. He and 17 other inhabitants complain about Gilbert McMicking cutting trees and devaluing Lots 7 through 11 in Concession 4 of Willoughby. A friend of McMicking's writes a 3 page letter in his support explaining that he built a steam mill and needed wood as fuel. The mill was burned by "incendiaries from the American side" and McMicking had not been reimbursed for his losses. He also states that McMicking has leased out 50 acre lots of this Block of land to "a few poor Germans." Peter Sayler must be one of these "poor Germans" who signed the petition. In 1851 Peter Saylor and his wife are living with son Henry who is named first and thus head of the household. In 1852, Samuel Saylor buys 50 acres of lot 7, con 4, Willoughby from a Joseph Danner who was granted the lot in 1846. It is probable that Peter Sayler had a lease with McMicking for this lot and his son Samuel ends up buying it. 7A. THE 1842 PETITION re lots 7 to 11, con 4, WILLOUGHBY Peter Sayler is the leader of this petition. John Danner is probably his co-leader judging from where Danner's signature is placed beside Peter's. These 18 inhabitants inform the government of what they feel is misuse of the leased by Gilbert McMicking. In January 1846, Joseph Danner is granted lot 7 by the Crown and he sells the south half, 50 acres, to Samuel Saylor in March 1852. 1842 PETITION Dated at Willoughby this second day of May 1842 To His Excellency the Right Honorable Sir Charles Bagot GCB etc etc We the undersigned deemed it a duty we owe to the Government under which we reside, to make known that they have understood, that Gilbert McMicking Esq of Chippawa has obtained a lease or license of occupation for Five Hundred acres of Glebe the lands in the township of Willoughby in the District of Niagara, being lots number Seven Eight Nine Ten and Eleven in the fourth concession. That the undersigned have been further informed were so leased under certain restrictions for improving the roads alongside the same, and to clear and direct buildings thereon, in order to render them valuable at some future period, should the Government hereafter dispose of them The undersigned beg leave to represent that in place of their being improved and rendered more valuable, they are becoming less so, and are not now of one half the value they were previous to their being leased, in as much as all the valuable timber, such as Oak and Pine, has been cut and sold by the occupant to the amount of at least seven hundred and fifty Pounds [£750], thereby depreciating the value of said lands in a very serious degree The undersigned, many of them who are residing in the vicinity of said lands, have conceived it necessary to inform the Government of the facts as herein set forth - That such steps might be taken as would appear under such circumstances to prevent a total depreciation of their value and in setting forth what they have done, they humbly conceived they have done nothing more than their duty - The undersigned further humbly and respectfully submit, and solicit the attention of Government, to the immediate disposal of those lands situated as they are almost in the very center of the Township they tend in a serious degree to retard the improvement of the same, and the sooner they are brought into market, the more they would fetch, before they are entirely stripped of all valuable timber - and in so doing it would prevent much ill feeling and contention now arising in consequence of their being situated as they are, all of which is most respectfully submitted [all signed. 6B. COMMISSION REPORT re lots 7 to 11, con 4, WILLOUGHBY Gilbert McMicking is leased these 5 lots (500 acres) in 1835 and cuts lumber. The inhabitants claim in their petition that he sold the lumber for £750. A friend writes that McMicking built a steam mill and used the wood for fuel. In Nov 1842, six months after the inhabitants petitioned, the Crown revokes McMicking's lease. Within a month, Dec 1842 a friend of McMicking pleads his case. In 1835 he sees an advertisement in the paper that the lots are to be sold by the Government and offers to purchase them. However the Abstract Index to the land records shows Joseph Danner being granted the lots in 1846. The key piece in this whole affair is that Gilbert McMicking is said to have "leased the Block out to a few poor Germans in 50 acre parcels for a few years." This obviously refers to the German inhabitants who petitioned, Peter Sayler being among them. TOWNSHIP PAPERS FOR LOTS 7 TO 11, CON 4 [267] 24th April 1835 In Council Administration of Sir John Colbourne VCB Lieutenant Governor Ordered that a Licence of Occupation be granted to Gilbert McMicking of Chippawa in the District of Niagara, Esquire, of lots number 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11 in the Fourth Concession of the Township of Willoughby containing together 500 acres, reserved as a Glebe, with the understanding that the Government may resume the Lands when deemed necessary without admitting any Claim for remuneration. [signed] John Beikie Clerk executive Council [268] 7.8.9.10 & 11, 4, Willoughby, Order in Council 22 Nov 1842 Entd in Book No 8 Folio 547 [269-270] 1842 PETITION 22 Nov 1842, Extract from a report of a committee of the Executive and approved by His Excellency the Governor General in Council on the same day. Peter Sayler and other Inhabitants of the Township of Willoughby informing the Government that Gilbert McMicking who obtained a licence of occupation of certain Glebe lots (nos 7.8.9.10 and 11 in the 4th Concession of the said Township) has been cutting the best timber and otherwise injuring the said lots. The lots for which licence of occupation was given to Mr McMicking and the Glebe lots as such should not be used for any purpose foreign to the trust upon which they are placed as the dispreat? of the Provincial Government. The committee therefore recommend that Mr McMieking be informed that the licence of occupation is revoked, and that the lands be treated in future as ordinary Clergy Reserve. [side note] Mr McMicking notified by letter 4 July 1843. Entered on Plan. [272 - 274] 23rd Dec 1842 Queenston District of Niagara Commis of Lands My friend Mr. McMicking of Chippawa has shown me a letter of yours of the 14th Inst informing him that the licence of occupation which he held under the date 24th April 1835 - for lots number 7.8.9. 10 & 11 in the Township of Willoughby in this District had been canceled. If the executive could reconsider their decision I feel confident that Mr. McMicking has strong claims upon the government relative to his being allowed the use of those lands for a longer period; First the ground on which he obtained them were to provide fuel to a steam flouring mill, no water mill being in that part of the Country for great distance to enable the inhabitants of the five townships composing the Fourth Riding of Lincoln to get funding with the exception of two which are far from the steam mill and they only by the spring and fall freshet did grinding for a few weeks in the year[.] The steam mill was erected at great expense and without the advantage of the road from those cultivated lands in its vicinity the erection would not have answered the purpose[.] But unfortunately the mill has been totally consumed during our recent trouble by two incendiaries who came from the American side expressly to destroy them[.] One of the incendiaries was afterwards apprehended and remained in our gaol for over one year and was discharged on his giving information relative to the plot, on the information thus derived last year the Governor General communicated with the Governor of the state of New York The burning was not on account of Mr. McMicking but purely to do a public injury knowing that those mills were of great importance to the District. Another reason is that roads in that township are of the very worst kind[,] indeed there are scarcely a road in it[,] and on that account he has done much and still is in opening new roads through the tract much to the advantage of the interior settler. He hath leased the Block out to a few poor Germans in 50 acre parcels for a few years[,] three of which are unexpired and upon the very expressed condition that roads should be opened; there are other reasons I might mention however I Trust from what I have said His Excellency the Governor General and the Honorable Executive Council will see cause if considered to rescind the order canceling his licence of occupation at least till the leases expires between [torn] and the Germans aforesaid[.] Indeed he has erected small Barns for the benefit of those people and as yet hath not acquired any return for his outlay or compensation as intended when the lease was granted, the improvements made on the lands far exceed any advantage he has yet derived there from[.] I have the honor to be Sir your very obedient and humble servant David Danburn? [275] Gilbert McMicking Chippawa Aug 1845 Is willing to purchase Glebe lots 7.8.9.10 & 11 in 4 Con Willoughby at 25/ per acre. 8. POSSIBLE CHILDREN of PETER SAYLOR and ELIZABETH LAPP The earliest record is the 1823 census stating that Peter Saylor had a family of 3 males and 2 males meaning two sons and and one daughter. This matches our current thinking of the first three children being Abraham, Samuel and Esther, all born before 1823. There is no definitive list or record of the children of this couple. See the section for each child below for more detail. Children of PETER SAYLOR and ELIZABETH LAPP are: 1. ESTHER SAYLOR, (1817 - ??) m. NICHOLAS WILLICK 2. ABRAHAM SAYLOR, (1818 - 1887) m. 8E. ISAAC SAYLOR Thanks to Norman Findlay for clarifying this family and noting in the 1851 census that Issac and his sister Elizabeth were living with Nicholas Willick and Nicholas's wife Esther [Saylor] who was the eldest sister of Isaac and Elizabeth. Norm writes ,"If you check the 1851 census closely (second page) it identifies Isaac Saylor and Elizabeth Saylor as both being single. Isaac’s future wife, Elizabeth Willick, was still living at home in 1851. The census also identifies Isaac as not being part of the [Willick] family and Elizabeth was part of the family. Nicholas and Esther were Elizabeth Willick’s aunt and uncle. Nicholas Willick’s wife was Esther Saylor, so, based on the census information, I am making an assumption at this time she was Elizabeth’s sister. ISSAC SAYLOR (PETER1) was born 31 Mar 1828 in Willoughby Township, Welland County, Upper Canada, and died 06 Dec 1902 in Longwood Rd, Mosa [Isaac Saylor recorded as Sailor] a 74 year old married farmer from Longwood Road in Mosa Township, West Middlesex County, Ontario died on December 6, 1902 in Wardsville, Middlesex County, Ontario. Dr. C. C. Elliot certified he died from apoplexy after two days. He was noted as being a Mennonite who had been born in Welland County, Ontario.]. He married ELIZABETH WILLICK, daughter of JOSEPH WILLICK and ESTHER BOYER. She was born 20 Feb 1836 in Canada, and died 19 Mar 1906 in Longwood Rd, Mosa [Elizabeth Saylor a 70 year old housewife of Longwood Road, Mosa Township, West Middlesex County, Ontario died on March 19, 1906 in Wardsville, Middlesex County, Ontario. She was noted as being the wife of William Saylor [which was incorrect]. Dr. Alex G. McMillan certified she died from a diabetic coma and congestion after a short length of illness. She had been born in Willoughby Township, Welland County [recorded as Wellington County], Ontario. She was noted as being a Mennonite.]. Note: It is conjecture that Isaac is a son of Peter Saylor and Eliz Lapp as no document has surfaced stating the relationship. However he is so entwined with the Lapps in land purchase records as a purchaser and a witness and with Judith Saylor below that it is most likely that Isaac is their son and I am treating it as such. Norm Findlay also fully agrees with this conclusion. In 1851 Isaac is married to Elizabeth Willick and living with her parents, Nicholas and Esther Willick in Willoughby Township. Probably they had recently married and no children are listed and they do not yet have their own farm. They are Evangelists. In 1861 and 1871 they are living in Bertie Tp. where the family are Wesleyan Methodists. By 1881 they are in Mosa Tp, Middlesex Co. and they have become Mennonites. His 'possible' sister Judith and her husband Frederick Miller are living with the Nicholas Willick family in 1861. 1851 CENSUS Nicholas Willick Male 37 abt 1815 France, Evangelist, Farmer and head of household [Married - part of family] Esther Willick Female 34 abt 1818 Canada, Evangelist [Married - part of family] Maryann Willick Female 75 abt 1777 France, Catholic [Widowed - part of family] Isaac Saylor Male 24 abt 1828 Canada, Evangelist [Single - not part of family] Elizabeth Saylor Female 22 abt 1830 Canada, Evangelist [Single - part of family] District: Welland County District Number: 40 Sub-District: Willoughby Sub-District Number: 384 Norm Findlay adds this, "In 1851 Isaac Saylor was living with and working for the Nicholas Willick family in a one story log house in Willoughby Township, Welland County, Canada West. The family was recorded as being Evangelist except for Anne Marie who was noted as being a Roman Catholic. The family was born in France [Nicholas and Anne Marie] and Canada [Esther, Isaac and Elizabeth]. 8F. ELIZABETH SAYLOR Thanks to Norm Findlay for identifying Elizabeth as a daughter of Peter Saylor and Elizabeth Lapp. In the 1851 census she is shown as a single woman living in the home of Nicholas Willick and her oldest sister Esther, wife of Nicholas. Her brother Isaac is also living there. The 1851 census states Elizabeth is 22 years of age and born in Canada and thus born about 1830. The Kinzie Family Tree on Ancestry shows an Elizabeth of the right age belonging to Peter Saylor and Elizabeth Lapp that married a David Hershey. The 1861 census for Elizabeth and David Hershey had a 16-year-old Mary Saler [Saylor] living with them. Possibly a younger sister or child or older sibling? Elizabeth [Saylor] Hershey is buried in the Lapp Cemetery along with other members of the Peter Saylor family. Her headstone reads, "ELIZABETH, wife of David Hershey, Died Aug 21, 1864, aged 33 yrs 5 mos & 27 days. On the same headstone and below it reads: SAMUEL, son of David & Elizabeth HERSHEY Died Aug 21 1864, aged 16 days."Obviously Elizabeth died from complications during child birth. Her birth date calculates to 28 Jul 1831. Source: Cemetery information on findagrave. The findagrave page lists her 5 children. The 1870 census for "Town Niagara out of village", Niagara County, New York shows David Hershey, age 43, boatman, born Canada wit three of his children; [Elizabeth 14, Mary A[nn] 16 and Isaac 7. Source: image from ancestry emailed by Norm Findlay. David Hershey is also buried in the Lapp Cemetery and his headstone is on findagrave. His death registration reads, David Hershey, died 8 Mar 1872, 44 yrs, occupation - farming generally, born Welland Co., died in Ontario of consumption about 6 weeks, "name [of physician] not known lived in US", informant Henry Sayler, farmer, Willoughby, religion none. 8G. JUDITH SAYLOR Norm Findlay writes, "Judith and her husband Frederick Miller are living with the Nicholas Willick family in 1861 In 1861 the Miller’s were actually living in their own log house as neighbor’s to the Nicholas Willick family. This suggests a connection to Isaac who married Elizabeth Willick , daughter of the Nicholas Willick family, and supports my conclusion that Isaac is a sibling of Judith and a son of Peter Saylor. I believe it also shows a close tie between Esther [Saylor] Willick - Nicholas’ wife to the Peter Saylor family." 9. THE FAMILY in the WILLOUGHBY TOWNSHIP LAND RECORDS Peter Saylor had 5 sons: Abraham, Samuel, Henry, Isaac, Benjamin and a daughters Esther, Elizabeth and Judith. In the 1851 census Abraham and Henry are shown as located on lots but at that time they did not own land. In the 1850's Samuel, Isaac and Abraham get enough money together to buy farms. In the 1861 census, father Peter Saylor is living on Isaac's farm on Lot 17, con 3 and Isaac is now in Bertie. Isaac Saylor sells Lot 17 back to Isaac Lapp in 1863 after his father dies. I have not found Isaac's farm in Bertie Tp. in the land books. By 1881 Isaac is farming in Mosa Tp, Middlesex Co. I have not found Henry or Benjamin owning a lot in Willoughby or Bertie. Henry is on lot 18 , con 3 in the 1851 census but he does not own it. Judith marries Nicholas Willick and they live in Willoughby. No Saylor, Sayler, Sailor was granted free land by the Crown anywhere in Upper Canada. They had to pay their way.
