of the Bay of Quinte WHY I AM INTERESTED IN THE SNIDER's: There are numerous Snider - Snyder settlers in the early record of Upper Canada. Many are Loyalists and they received land from Glengarry County in the east all the way to west of Niagara. The puzzle is to figure out who is related to whom and where in the US they came from. This page focuses on John Snider who first settled in Adolphustown and then moved to Ameliasburgh. All my Snider information is presented in groupings below and I welcome information about who they are vis a vis one another. | 1. John Snider of Ameliasburgh OVERVIEW John Snider, possibly a UE, may have come from Rockland, NY where he may have married Jannetje Quakenbush in 1792. In an 1816 document he states he was in Adolphustown and that he bought land in Ameliasburgh in 1797. No petitons have yet been found but the 1816 documents state that he is "privileged as a UE" and thus exempt from paying Patent Fees. Is this a mistake or is he a loyalist? Why did his children not apply for land as SUE and DUE's? The wills of his son Henry and Henry's wife Catherine are below and informative about the family. Mark Davenport writes, "The notes I have for Henry and William B. Snider indicate they were both born in Adolphustown, and the family came from the Rockland County NY (part of Orange County then) area perhaps with the Quackenbush family." IS JOHN SNIDER A LOYALIST? Jesse SNIDER was the great grandson of John SNIDER UE (1768 - ?) who landed at Adolphustown sometime before April 14, 1797. If John was born in 1768, he is essentially too young to have been involved in the War- unless he was something like a drummer boy. Chances are he is simply too young. 2. There are 3 John SNIDERS/SNYDERS on the "Executive Council List". Two are simply out of the area, but the third is in Ernestown Tp so the nearest to Adolphustown and Ameliasburgh of the three. However it is quite clear that John of Ernestown is a different man from John of Ameliasburgh - [see the notes below for him.] 3. The children of John of Ameliasburgh did not apply as SUEs or DUEs suggesting he is not a UE, but I have also seen that happen a time or two elsewhere. On the basis of this, I suspect John SNIDER of Ameliasburgh is not a UE. Besides the John Snider of Ernestown did have a considerable family who applied. ADOLPHUSTOWN LAND I checked "Land Transfers Adolphustown 1797-1999" by Lois Davis O'Hara published in 2001. It appears to be transcriptions of the land transactions from the Crown onwards. There is no John SNIDER in the index. When I think about it, it is not so surprising. Who's to say he owned land in Adolphustown? Many were there for a few years and moved on, no doubt without owning any property. Hiram was born in 1826 Ameliasburg had a son Stephen born in 1844. It is peculiar, but for about 20 years in the 1860's the family moved up to Percy Township Northumberland County and lived beside and worked with a Henry Snider who is buried in Norham Cemetery, Warkworth, died at 90 years of age. Shane Snider, 5 July 2013 I have solved the mystery of my Snider line and because of Ancestry DNA that linked me to an Elgin Snider in Warkworth circa 1880s - I have solved the link that John Snider Jr. b. 1799 d. 1879 is the son of John Snider Sr.of Tappan, NY who married Jannetke Quackenbush in 1792. John Snider Jr born in 1799 had a son named Hiram (Huram) Snider. John Jr had a brother named Henry. Henry’s son Henry Jr and his first cousin Hiram tripped up to Warkworth Ontario together with their families in the 1850’s. They worked in the mill that’s still there beside the river and lived a few lots down from each other. I was able to make the link with those two because my DNA had a hit with a woman whose ancestral parent was Elgin Snider - Henry Jr’s son - thus linking me to John Sr. Source: email. The deceased was a son of Martin Snider, a UE Loyalist, and was born in New Brunswick in May 1790; emigrated to Canada in 1811, and shortly after this, the war of 1812 broke out, when he was found reproducing the history of his fathers career in 1776, by taking arms at the call of his country and his Sovereign. He was married in 1815, and was consigned to his last resting place by a numerous family of children grand and great grandchildren. The deceased became a member of the order of Antient Free and Accepted Masons of New Brunswick, in the year 1811, and at the time of his death was one of the oldest Masons in Canada; he was an honorary member of St Andrews Lodge, Eglington, and was buried by the craft with Masonic honours. The St Andrew's and York Lodges being present. The church funeral service by the Rev. J. Learoyd, Wesleyan minister of the Yonge Street South Circuit, and the usual impressive and solemn Masonic service was conducted by R. W. Bro. Stephens, D.D.G.M. [Printed eulogy] Source: The above Bible and funeral material was emailed to me by Janet Skinner, May 2008, and she wrote that it comes from loose papers inserted in "The Willson Bible that was given to my mother, Ruby Snider, when it was discovered in the wall of a building during some renovations. It was given to her because of the Snider papers and she in turn, passed it on to me. When I moved to Vancouver Island in 1994, I gave it to the Toronto Branch of the UEL Association [Note: It is there in 2009]. The Bible is from the family of Arthur Lawrence Willson M.A. and Sarah Adeline Mitchell married October 1st, 1863 by the Rev Wellington Jeffers." 1753 BIRTH YEAR It's important to note that Loyalist Martin Snider's gravestone in the Pioneer Cemetery in Willowdale, gives his age at the time of his death in 1828, as 75 years, making his birth year 1753. This is in keeping with the marriage date of his parents, Johann Jacob Schneider and Maria Magdalena Lang/Long: Nov. 12, 1751 at Old Goshenhoppen Lutheran church, PA. This marriage record was only discovered in October, 2001, when I visited Upper Mount Bethel, Northampton Co. PA with descendants of Martin's brother, Elias Snider. Distant cousin Sandra Thorne and her husband Richard, are both accredited genealogists and live in Hampton, NB. Sniders of Ancaster JACOB SNIDER AND SAVILLA SNIDER - Janice Sly's puzzle My gggrandfather Jacob Snider b. 1782 MD or PA- died 1855 MI who married Savilla Snider in Canada by 1820 who was a daughter of Michael Snider in the Halton area. This lineage is listed in the Annals of the Forty (Grimsby Hist. Assn, volume 8 pages 61-65) and also in the Crowell Smith papers. Sniders of Niagara Philip Snyder, Gainsborough, settler PETITION 6 Apr 1819, York, petition of John Snyder, Adam Snyder and Joseph Snyder all of Gainsborough, yeomen, are all sons of Philip Snyder Sr of Gainsborough a settler from New Jersey about 25 years ago. That John was born in NJ is 32 years old has a wife and one child; Adam and Joseph were born in this province and are both upwards of 21 years of age and all are desirous to becomes settlers and pray for a settlers grant. Report states that Adam Snider of Gainsborough and John Snider of Barton had recently been granted 100 acres. If these are not two of the petitioners then they have not received land. It is with deep regret that we are called upon to chronicle the death of Mrs. Jacob Snyder, a very old resident of Equesing… She was ill but a few days and died at the ripe age of 75 years. The deceased came, with her husband, from Lincoln Company about 50 years ago, and faced and overcame all the trials and difficulties evident to the early settlers. The deceased bore her full share of these, and lived and died respected by all who knew here. She was an earnest Christian, very regular in her attendance of the various religious services, and her home was a most welcome one to any who required food or shelter. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon and was very …attended. The six sons of the deceased, Eli, Action; William, Guelph; Henry, Walkerton; Adam, Mount Forest; Issac, Erin; and Robert of the homestead, acted as bearers of the corpse at the funeral, and the … Source: emailed from Janice Sly, Obituary printed in Halton County’s Acton Free Press : 15 September 1881 (page 3,column 3) Mr. Jacob Snyder—Another old resident in the person of Mr. Jacob Snyder was called to his rest on Saturday last, after a short illness at the age of 79 years. Mr. Snyder was born in the township of Gainesborough, Lincoln Co., Ont, on the 20th of May, 1808, where he grew to manhood. On the 14th May, 1829 he was joined in matrimony to Mary Zimmerman, of Clinton Township in the same county. In June 1830, they left the place of their birth and took up their residence in Erin, Wellington Co—then almost a wilderness—where they resided until 1844 when they removed to Esquesing, this county, and settled on what has always been known as Swackhammer’s Hill, at which place they spent the remainder of their lives. They were blessed with a family of twelve children—six sons and six daughters—ten of whom are still living. Their fiftieth wedding anniversary was celebrated two years ago last May, when a large number of friends gathered, and it was greatly enjoyed especially by the old people themselves. On 9th September last, Mrs. Snyder was removed by death after a short illness, and her untiring care and close attention was greatly missed by the old gentleman, who said he would soon follower her, and they would be again united in that better world, which wish was soon realized. They were among the pioneers of this vicinity and their removal will be deeply felt by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
