| Quinte Family Mini Pages The research question Linda Herman has kindly shared her research below and she writes, "I am working on Platt Townsend .... there has been a long-on-going debate about whether he or Charles Townsend is the son that came with William and Elizabeth "Betsy" Townsend from Albany County, NY to Percy Twp in 1817. I have now found enough to speculate that it was Charles and not Platt. I believe we have enough information to build a family for Platt and his family has nothing to do with William and Betsy Townsend. As an aside, I also found the proof that William's wife is not Elizabeth Mulford as so many people believe .... she is actually Elizabeth Turner d/o Daniel Turner and a sister to Fanny Puffer and Catherine Stone." � Linda Herman, July 2014. | 1. WILLIAM TOWNSEND and ELIZABETH (Betsy) TURNER of PERCY Tp. William Townsend and Elizabeth Turner of Percy Twp come from Albany with only 1 son born in the US. We find them in Percy Twp in 1817... this son is Charles b. 1815. Elizabeth is not Elizabeth Mulford as so many believe. Why Elizabeth is not a Mulford Elizabeth has been listed as Elizabeth Mulford by most researchers ... but we believe that she is Elizabeth Turner .... if you want more info on this contact me. Elizabeth Mulford actually married William Kneeland Townsend in 1820, long after our William and Betsy Townsend are in Percy Twp with children .... some people have thought that our William of Percy Twp is William Kneeland but he is not....his parents do not marry until 1795....our William is born 1789/90 William Kneeland Townsend b. Jun 3, 1796 in New Haven, Ct married Eliza Ann Mulford Dec 3, 1820. He is the son of Isaac Townsend 1765-1841 and Rhoda Atwater .... they marry April 11, 1795 (too late to be the parents of our William). There are nine children listed for William Kneeland Townsend and Eliza Ann Mulford....two of them with Mulford as a second name, and none of them are ours. Source: Connecticut, Church Record Abstracts, 1630-1920 about Isaac Townsend Jr Name: Isaac Townsend Jr Marriage Date: 11 Apr 1795 Marriage Place: New Haven, Connecticut, USA Spouse Name: Rhoda Atwater Volume Title: Volume 078 Part 2 New Haven Why Elizabeth is probably a Turner Simeon Puffer was granted a war pension for his service in the Revolutionary War. After the death of Simeon and Fanny, son Cornelius petitions for the unpaid monies from that pension. In 1845 in Percy Twp., Elizabeth and Willliam Townsend along with Catherine and William Stone sign an affadavit stating that they have had long acquaintance and have known Simeon Puffer and Fanny his wife and the whole family for forty years and state that Cornelius Puffer who is now making application for arrearages is the heir. They give the dates of death of both Simeon and Fanny Puffer and state that there were five children living at the time of Fanny's death and list them and the ages of the two males. Fanny Puffer is Fanny Turner daughter of Daniel and Jane Turner. In the History of the County of Peterborough, pg 728, it states that Catherine Stone is Catherine Turner. Another daughter of Daniel and Jane Turner. There is a third daughter recorded for Daniel and Jane Turner, Elizabeth Turner and though we do not have documentation of her marriage, her connections to both Fanny Puffer and Catherine Stone and her knowledge of Fanny and Simeon for over 40 years are strong circumstantial evidence. I conclude that Fanny Puffer, Catherine Stone and Elizabeth Townsend are sisters and all the daughters of Daniel and Jane Turner. All of these families came to Percy Twp from Coeyman's, Albany Co. CHARLES TOWNSEND and ELIZABETH VAN VLACK of HALLOWELL Charles Townsend and Elizabeth Van Vlack who lived in Hallowell (this is the family to which Platt belongs) .... this family has been far more difficult to piece together .... I believe that Charles is one of the Oyster Bay Townsend clan; and the Townsends of Norfollk, who I have not researched. Will of Charles Townsend Charles Townsend of the Township of Hallowell in the County and District Prince Edward and Province of Upper Canada - yeoman. Do make and declare this my last will and testament....my wordly estate I give and devise as follows...to my beloved wife Elizabeth Townsend during her natural life all my real and personal estate composed of **** of the rear half of the east half of Lot number twelve and the West quarter of Lot number thirteen in the first concession North West side of East Lake in Hallowell consisting of 16 acres - together with my house and other buildings and improvements as well as all my goods and chattle property. Thirdly I divise all my real and personal Estate ,when deserted, after the death of my wife to John B. Spencer my son in law Abram Townsend and Willet Townsend my sons in trust to be sold by them within one year after the death of my wife and from the funds to pay to my eldest son Stephen five dollars and the residue after paying all my Just debts to divide equally between all my children share and share alike. Lastly I hereby appoint and constitute the foresaid John B. Spencer Abram and Willet Townsend my Executors....fourth day of may in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty six. PLATT TOWNSEND There has been an on-going debate about Platt Townsend for the last 15 years. Many have thought that he was the son of William and Elizabeth Townsend of Percy Twp. But William and Elizabeth come from Albany with only 1 son born in the US. We find them in Percy Twp in 1817 and this son is Charles b. 1815. Platt's marriage registration states that his parents are John and Elizabeth Townsend and that he was born in Dutchess Co....many researchers have simply renamed William Townsend as "John William" or "William John" in order to make him fit as Platt's father but nowhere has there ever been anything with the name "John" on it in connection with William. How do we ignore Platt's marriage certificate? The marriage certificate for Platt states his parents are John and Elizabeth Townsend and not Charles and Elizabeth Townsend as is being suggested. I have seen so many documents with errors that it does not trouble me at all with the amount of other things I have found. If you look at the death cert of Charles Townsend, son of William it says that his father is James and his mother is Lucy....that is what started the debate years ago as to whether Platt or Charles was the son that came from New York with William Townsend. My greatgrandfather was Nathaniel Hatch.....for years and years I stuck on who his parents were because his death cert said his father was Nathaniel Hatch....it wasn't. I have seen often children fill in their own mothers name for the mother of the deceased and in my greatgrandfathers case he filled in his own fathers name and not the father of the deceased. I had to remember that many of these people did not read well and documents were confusing. I also realized suddenly that I was assuming that Platt had given the information for the marriage cert....not necessarily so. On the marriage cert for his second marriage the parents of the bride are listed but there are no parents listed for Platt....it would seem obvious that whoever filled it out did not know who his parents were....so I would say it was not Platt....same could easily be true for the marriage cert for the third marriage.. On one of the marriage certs for one of Platt's children it gives Roxy and Charles as the parents....yet we know the parents are Roxy and Platt. I have seen so many of these over the years that it troubles me not at all. Sometimes it is easier to prove that someone is not who they are said to be than it is to prove they are who you think they are....this is the case with Elizabeth Turner/Townsend. It is easy to prove she is not Elizabeth Mulford...the evidence that she is Elizabeth Turner is circumstantial....but sometimes that is all you get. At this point I am thinking that Charles may actually be the father of Platt (regardless of what the marriage registration says). I have found other children born 1805, and 1807 that I believe are the children of Charles and Elizabeth and that would make it more likely that Platt b. 1812 is also a son. Have seen no sight of the mysterious "John Townsend". TOWNSEND FAMILY OF NORFOLK COUNTY I have looked at the Townsend Family of Norfolk.....they do not seem to belong to our American Townsend they seem to be from England and I have not followed them up at this point...BUT there is also ...(no idea of who he is ....he does not seem to be connected to Charles Townsend.)
