Pioneers
of the Bay of Quinte My original focus was on Elizabeth White (1776 - 1841) who married William Kelly Jr. It appears that this Elizabeth White, is the daughter of William and Hannah White based on land records, child naming patterns and White's Church involvement. However, there is no solid evidence so this remains speculative. In doing this work it was important to know more about William Kelly Jr and his father William Kelly Sr. Note, some records spell the surname as Kelley. Linda Herman emailed me about a possible second wife of William Sr and this prompted me to update this page. Thanks Linda. © Randy Saylor 2005, updated Oct. 2012 |

1. OVERVIEW This page focuses first on Elizabeth White and then William Kelly or Kelley Sr. William Kelly Jr and Elizabeth [White] Kelly named their six children Stephen, Hannah, Cornelius, John, Reuben and Fanny. If Elizabeth was indeed a child of William White and Hannah Tompkins then her mother was Hannah and her siblings were Cornelius, Reuben, Fanny and possibly Stephen. The naming pattern of her children speaks loudly that there is a connection. As well, the account below from PLBQ states that, "In a figurative sense, the Kelley's and White's Church are one and inseparable, so closely have the members of this family been associated with this old church from the beginning of its career." Reuben White gifted the land for White's Church and it was named after him. William Jr also has a number of land dealings with Cornelius and Reuben White as listed below. Given these ties, it is my assertion that Elizabeth White is the daughter of Hannah [Tomkins] White and sister of Cornelius, Reuben and Fanny White. There is no known record to confirm this. Elizabeth is not named by John Stephenson Barker in his 1890 list of the White family. Given that Elizabeth died in 1841 it is easy to imagine that JSB did not know about her. There is another possible father of Elizabeth in Sidney at the time. A Stephen White is in the early record witnessing land deals of William White and he disappears by 1805. It could be that he was a brother of William and possible father of Elizabeth or this Stephen could have been the oldest son of William who died as a young adult. Regardless, Elizabeth's oldest son was born in 1801 and named Stephen, perhaps in honour of Elizabeth's father. This puzzle sits unresolved. William Kelly Senior petitions in 1797 stating that he arrived in Upper Canada 1788 with a wife and two children (sons John and William). William Jr was born in 1774 in NY state so assuming William Sr was about 24 at his birth that makes William Sr's birth year about 1750 and he died before March 1829. He did not petition as a Loyalist and his children did not petition as children of a Loyalist so it can be concluded that he was a settler and not a Loyalist. PLBQ erroneously suggests he was a Loyalist. It is interesting to follow William Sr's land dealings. In 1789, William Kelly "of Adolphustown" buys the east half of lot 20, broken front and lot 20, con 2 in Sidney from John Elmes and wife and an affidavit in this record affirms that he lived on the lot since 1795. He pays Elmes the money owing before the Nov 1793 deadline and it takes two petitions to the Heirs and Devisee Commission in 1812 and in 1817 to straighten this matter out. He finally is given title to the land in 1821. In one affidavit, James McNabb JP admits to "I have either lost or mislaid the aforesaid Conveyance and cannot possibly find" the papers relating to the transfer of title. We can imagine how frustrated William Sr must have felt in his struggle to get title. William Kelly Sr is a Path Master in Sidney in 1793 so he must have moved to Sidney earlier - perhaps as early as 1789. Meanwhile, in 1794 he is granted a lot in Thurlow that he declares 'unimprovable' and asks to have it changed to Cramahe Tp. In 1797 he is named as "of Sidney" and petitions for a further grant. He was granted a further lot in Hungerford Tp. and not in Cramahe. In 1798 William is one of 58 inhabitants of Sidney, Thurlow and Ameliasburgh who sign a petition. The 1829 sale of lot 20, Con 2, Sidney land states that John Kelly is the eldest son and heir at law of William Kelley, Sidney, deceased. Clearly, we can conclude that William Kelly Sr lived from the early 1790's till his death in 1829 on lot 20, Con 2 in Sidney. Who did William Kelly Sr marry? No record has been found that states who William Sr married. However there is a baptism record "William s/o William and Mary Kelly - Sidney - 6 Mar 1797" in Rev. John Langhorn's register. This can be interpreted two ways. The first, and I feel incorrect interpretation, is that William Jr, at age 23 is married to a Mary and has a son William. We know that by 1801 he has a son Stephen with his wife Elizabeth White. Therefore both Mary and son William would have had to die soon after this 1797 baptism. I think the correct interpretation is that William Jr is baptised at age 23. It is not unusual to see teeenage and young adult children being baptized in the early church records. If this is true, then William Sr's first wife was named "Mary". Linda Herman has suggested a second wife for William Kelley Sr. "My
ancestor from Percy Twp was Thomas Curtis ... he came to Ontario about
1800 with a wife and 8 children, 6 from his first and second marriage
and 2
from his wife's first marriage. His wife was Lucy Cheney who had
married an unknown Cummings first and then somewhere in New York
she married Thomas
Curtis. When Thomas died in Percy Twp, Lucy married a William Kelly Sr.
Linda writes that Lucy is buried in Warkworth Cemetery and her headstone reads, "Lucy wife of William Kelly Senr Mother of David Cummings died May 10 1842, 81 yrs." Lucy's dates are therefore 1761 - 1842. Linda has searched the Percy and Haldimand township records and can find no other William Kelly in the area at that time and has concluded that William Kelly Sr of Sidney is the most likely candidate. Of course we have no proof but this assertion is not unreasonable. William Sr buys land in Sidney (1789) was granted land in Thurlow (1797) and lived on lot 20, Con 2, Sidney. There was much travel between Percy, Murray and Sidney Townships so it is not hard to imagine William and Lucy marrying and Lucy moving to Sidney. William Sr dies before March 1829 and perhaps Lucy returned to Percy when the Sidney farm was sold by the Kelly sons in 1832. However there is a William Kelly of Murray Township who dies in August 1838 of natural causes. See the coroners report below. Perhaps he is the one Lucy Cheney married. So, we can speculate, based on thin evidence, that William Sr married first a Mary and then maybe Lucy Cheney at a later date. William Kelly Jr lived in Sidney and John, the eldest son, lived in Haldimand Tp. In 1832 the boys sell the two lots in Thurlow that their father had been granted. In the 1851 census William Jr is living with his son John Kelly and family in Sidney as an elderly single man and he is designated as a Quaker. This is not unexpected as Cornelius White and his father William White were Quakers as well. Probably he was affiliated with Cold Creek Meeting at Wooler, the records for which have not survived for this period. He has not been found in the West Lake Quaker books. According to PLBQ, William Jr dies in his 81st year in 1855 and his wife Elizabeth White predeceases him in 1841 at 65 years of age. There is a George Kelly who is a Quaker in Haldimand Tp at a later date mentioned in the Orthodox West Lake Quaker Register (see item #13). There are no Kellys in the Hicksite Quaker register (#24). Back to top 3. PIONEER LIFE ON THE BAY OF QUINTE KELLY CONNECTION From the very beginning of civilization on the shores of the Bay of Quinte, the Front of Sidney has been the home of Methodism. White's Church is the oldest church in the township, it is said, and like all old churches, it has a history. The building of the church edifice was begun by the Presbyterians in about 1821, but being unable to complete it, they transferred their interests to the Methodists. The land upon which it stands was donated by Reuben White, an early settler on the Front. The Methodism of a century ago possessed a wonderful vitality. It was indigenous to the soil and adapted to the climate. Neither nationality nor social conditions could prevail against it. Methodism was the great panacea of pioneer times, bringing good cheer to the disheartened, hope to the despondent, and faith in a overruling Providence to the hopeless unbeliever. The old cabin builders found all the stoicism they wanted in their daily struggles for an existence; what the conditions of their lives demanded, was enthusiasm and emotional inspiration, and Methodism met this demand. The Kelleys may be classed with the founders of Methodism in Sidney. In a figurative sense, the Kelleys and White's Church are one and inseparable, so closely have the members of this family been associated with this old church from the beginning of its career. William Kelley, the pioneer ancestor of the family, was born two years before the colonies threw off their allegiance to King George, and it was several years after the war when he came to Sidney. It is said that his father was a United Empire Loyalist [note: this claim is not supported by the evidence]. William had four sons - Stephen, Cornelius, Reuben and John; and two daughters, Hannah and Fanny. William Kelley married Elizabeth White. He died in 1855 in his eighty-first year [b. 1774]; and his wife in 1841, in her sixty-fifth year [b. 1776]. Source: PLBQ, 1904, 474 Back to top |

5. WILLIAM KELLY JR BIRTH Calculated from PLBQ above, William died in 1855 at 81 thus born abt 1774. William states he was born in NY in his 1796 petition below. PLBQ also states that his wife Elizabeth White died in 1841 at 65 thus born abt 1776. However, Elizabeth is buried in Whites Cemetery and the headstone reads: "In memory of Elizabeth, wife of Wm Kelley who died 22 Apr 1841 AE 63 Yrs 5m 14 d." Thus she was born abt 8 Nov 1777. Source: Whites Cemetery Transcriptions, AO, MS 451, reel 68. p. 9 BAPTISM William s/o William and Mary Kelly - Sidney - 6 Mar 1797 Note: It is difficult to figure this out. Could it be that William Jr was baptized at age 22? It is very possible. If so then Mary is the forename of the wife of William Kelly Sr. Or it is possible that William Jr had a first wife named Mary and a son named William in 1797. Then he married Elizabeth White before 1801 when son Stephen was born. A son named William is not known to have survived for William Jr. Thanks to Linda Herman for noticing this record and wondering what it means.
