Died Sat. March 21, 1998, age 84 years. Carl was preceded in death by his 
parents, Charles and Sophie Lorenz and a sister Leah Basham. He is survived 
by a sister Anita (Bernard) Griffin of Park Falls, WI. Further survived by 
nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends. In respect to his wishes 
a Private Prayer Service was held at the funeral home on Wed. for his family. 
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thurs., March 26th 
at 10:30 AM at ST. MARGARET MARY CHURCH, 3930 N. 92nd St. Private interment 
will take place at Calvary Cemetery. 
 
Carl lead his own band playing sax with Del Krause and a piano player named 
Walter Liberace, playing "Saloons" in the Milwaukee area including Kuglistch's 
Arcade in West Milwaukee. After spending four years in the Army Air Corps in 
WW II, he began a life long career in the candy industry. He became sales 
director for the Barg & Foster and Sperry Candy Companies in Milwaukee. He 
set up a West coast operation for the Murray Allen Import Co. of NYC in San 
Mateo, CA.  Eventually he set up an identical West coast operation for the 
Stark Candy Co., in Pewaukee. When Murray Allen faltered, he spent his last 
years with the Stark Candy Co. in Pewaukee, retiring at the age of 75. Carl 
spent his leisure time traveling the globe to Europe, the Orient, Caribbean 
and completely covering the USA and Western Canada. He also was a beloved 
member of The Motley Crew.

McKay, J. Curtis 
 
Age 71, of 511 Park Ave., Sheboygan. Died at his residence Monday, March 23, 
1998. He was born in Chicago, IL, on October 10, 1926, a son of the late John 
L.  and Theodora Bennett McKay. Mr. McKay attended schools in the Chicago 
area and received his undergraduate degree from Grinnell College, Grinnell, 
Iowa. He then received a Juris Doctor degree from from Northwestern 
University Law School in 1957, after which he became a partner in the law 
firm of Goldenberg & McKay, Milwaukee, WI. 
 
J. Curtis McKay and Ruth Winters were united in marriage on September 25, 1965 
in Mequon, WI. In 1967 he moved his law practice to Cedarburg, WI, where he 
spent many years as a senior partner in McKay and Martin law firm. Before 
becoming a lawyer, Mr. McKay had operated a small manufacturing business, a 
metal fabricating shop, a retail hardware store and aerial crop dusting 
operation in Walworth County, WI. He was chairman of the board and General 
Counsel of Kohler General Corp., Sheboygan Falls from 1980 until his 
retirement in 1995. 
 
In his first bid for public office he was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly 
in 1960 and re-elected in 1962, 1964 and 1966. While in the State Assembly, 
he served as Assistant Majority Leader in the 1963 and 1964 session, and was 
elected Majority Floor Leader for the 1967 and 1968 session. He served as a 
delegate to the Republican National Conventions of 1964, 1972 and 1978. He 
was appointed to the State Elections Board when that legislation was enacted 
in 1973, and served as a member until 1980. Governor Tommy Thompson appointed 
him to another term on the Elections Board in May 1991, and continued to the 
present time. He was elected Chairman of the commission for the 1995 term. 
 
Curtis was a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, Illinois State Bar, 
Federal Bar and Sheboygan County Bar Association. He was also a member of the 
Sheboygan Noon Rotary Club and was Chairman of the Sheboygan Memorial Airport 
Advisory Committee. He was a Board Member of the Twin Cessna Flyers, the 
E.A.A. and the Quiet Birdmen Milwaukee Hangar. 
 
Surviving J. Curtis McKay are his wife Ruth; four children, Thomas McKay of 
Mequon, WI, Joan E. (Dennis) Winters-Nisewander of New York, NY, Janet L. 
(William) Haupt of Lodi, WI and Kimberly C. (David) Schmidt of Sheboygan Falls. 
Also surviving are five grandchildren: Sarah and Emily McKay, Katie Schmidt, 
Alex and Kevin Haupt. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, 
Josephine Drews. 
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Curtis on Thursday, March 
26 at 1:30 PM at Grace Episcopal Church, 1011 N. 7th St. with the Reverend 
Jack L.  Schauble, interim rector, as celebrant. The Reverend Susan Vergeront 
will also officiate at the service. A visitation will be held Wednesday, 
March 25 at the Habermann-Zimmer Funeral Home, 805 N. 6th St., Sheboygan from 
3 PM until 8 PM and will continue on Thursday at the church from 12 PM until 
time of service.  A committal service will follow the Mass. In lieu of 
flowers, a memorial fund has been established to the J. Curtis McKay 
Scholarship Fund c/o the Twin Cessna Flyers, 512 Broadway, Suite 102, New 
Haven, IN 46774, American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.
