Orders: Assigned to 503d Supply & Transport Battalion, Germany

After returning from TDY to Ft. Lee, I languished for months while the Army got around to giving me new orders affecting my remaining 8 months in active duty. Finally in mid September I received orders to report to Germany to serve my last 6 months of service. After returning home to Inkster, Michigan to enjoy a 15 day leave, I reported to Ft. Dix, New Jersey, being driven there by my sister, Lynn, and her friend, Bob Wisnewski from his home in Moristown, NJ. Changing from my civvies to my uniform in the parking lot at night, I bid them farewell and began my processing for a European tour. Stationed in Hanau Casern (Pioneer Kaserne), Germany, about 15 kilometers east of Frankfurt, I worked in A Company, 503d Supply & Transport Battalion, 3d Armored Division (Spearhead). My job was delivering rations to mess halls at bases in the larger Frankfurt area, including Friedburg, Gelnhausen, and Budingen, consisting of loading up long bed trailers and riding in the back, and pushing rations ot to mess sergeants. This was during the coldest winter recorded in Germany to that time. (Spelling correction: Inster corrected to read Inkster.)
