Remember that Posen was a Prussian province for only a relatively short period from 1793 to 1918 and was initially called Südpreußen or South Prussia before the name Posen was given to the whole province. While the area had a long history of German settlement, especially in the West, the largest part of the population in most areas was Polish and remained so even during the Prussian years. Those areas in the West around Deutsch Krone that were predominantly German remained with Germany after 1918. The remainder became part of a newly established Poland and most Germans left this area in the 1920s. In 1937 the Western parts that had remained in Germany became part of Pomerania, but this only lasted until 1945 when the entire area was placed under Polish administration and effectively became part of Poland. The German population was expelled and anyone choosing to remain was expected to become Polish. Any remaining relatives of the people listed on this page are therefore likely to be living within the current boundaries of Germany, but there is a possibility that some Schrank individuals remained in Poland and their names would then have been changed to Szrank.
