John Jefferson Green, son of William and Mary Green, was born April 4, 1841; departed this life January 6, 1926, aged 84 years, 9 months and 2 days.   He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth McDaniel, and to this union seven children were born, only two of whom survive.  He was again united in marriage Dec. 31, 1879, and to this union was born one son, Alfred, with whom he made his home. He leaves to survive him three children, Mrs. Emma Bowers, Mrs. Ella Lingle, and Alf Green, all of McLeansboro, three brothers, two sisters, six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

He professed faith in Christ some forty years ago and united with the Mt. Pleasant Christian Church. He told his family that he was ready and willing to go when his Saviour called.

He heard the call of his country, and enlisted in Company I, 58th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and served his country well until the close of the War.

Uncle Jeff had spent all of his life near where he was born and he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends, but our loss is his gain.

We should not weep as those that have no hope in Christ. In his quiet, unostentatious way he lived his daily life, doing his duty at all times and under all circumstances, leaving as honorable a record in civil life as he had made when he responded to the call of his country in the dark days of 1864, the time that tried men's souls. He left an example worthy of emulation alike for young and old.

Funeral services were conducted at Mt. Pleasant church by Walter Sanders. Burial in cemetery at same place.
