Introduction
This page is devoted to Jabez Perkins and his ancestry. I find Jabez an interesting ancestor. Born in New Haven, CT, before the American Revolution, he was raised in a Loyalist household in the North Carolina back country. As a child he saw his Father, Timothy, and paternal Uncle, Joseph, join the Loyalist forces against the Americans. According to contemporary accounts, his Father and Uncle were, "notorious Tories" who one time captured Col. Cleveland, an American commander and virtual warlord in the New River settlements. While being held for trial by the Loyalists, Cleveland was able to escape, supposedly with the help of one of the women of the household. The family were early Methodists.
By 1784 a guardian was appointed for Jabez in Wilkes Co., NC. Normally, one would assume this to mean that his father was dead. However, Dow Perkins wrote that Timothy Perkins was alive and living in Grayson Co., VA. This writer knows of no documentation to support that statement. Shortly after the guardian was appointed, Jabez appears to have married and moved to Montgomery/Grayson Co., VA, where several of his children were born. In 1789, he was appointed administrator to the estate of his maternal Uncle, William Sperry, in Wilkes Co., NC. It is not yet known if William Sperry was a Loyalist or if he supported the Americans in the Revolution. In the February 1807 term of the Ashe County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, the case of Jabez Perkins vs. Elisha Blevins was heard. The verdict is unreadable. By 1813 he was in the Knox/Whitley Co. KY, area. Sometime after 1830, already 65 years old, he moved his family to the Bureau/Putnam Co. Illinois area. He and his sons purchased land in 1835 and 1836. By December of 1835 he had returned to Whitley Co., KY, where he made his will and died before February 13, 1836. Jabez' son William returned to Whitley Co. and remained there the rest of his life. The rest of Jabez' children remained in Illinois or moved further West.
Some researchers have identified Jabez' wife as Nancy Ann Creekmore. I am not convinced that this is correct. I am also not convinced that his wife at the time he made his will is the mother of his children. Hopefully, further research in NC or VA will turn up a marriage certificate to settle the question.
Notes on Sources
I first began family research at age 11 when my Mother died. At the time, three of my Grandparents were alive. Had I known to ask them, many of my present dead lines might have been solved. Instead, like many young children, I put the research away and returned to it in college. I seriously started working on it in 1979 when I was studying for the bar exam. By then I had gotten to the family of Timothy Perkins and knew of Jacobus' sketch of the Perkins Family of New Haven, but I did not have evidence of the connection between my Timothy and the one from New Haven. I got the lead for that link at a birthday party for my maternal Uncle, Arnold Ball. There I was directed to relatives on both sides of my family who had done genealogical research.
I contacted Orville and Gloria Manning Perkins who referred me to Judge Paul M. Perkins and to Donald Perkins. Donald Perkins had commissioned work which found the will of Abel Sperry which mentions the marriage of Timothy Perkins with Mariam Sperry and their removal to North Carolina. With that and the work of Paul M. Perkins, I started to fill out the rest of the tree. I have done so by searching for contemporary records about the persons discovered in my research. At this time, I am concentrating on the following records: military records; wills and administrations; church records; marriage records; and population census records. Further research will extend to land records; court records and the farm and manufacturing censuses. I have cited secondary records where they appear to be based on primary record sources.
1. Jabez1 Perkins (Timothy, 2). Born, 6 Nov 1766, in New Haven, New Haven Co., CT. Died, circa 1836, in Whitley Co., KY. Occupation: farmer.
In 1784, George Morris was appointed Guardian to Gebas Perkins (Wilkes
Co., NC, Will Bk 1, p.123). In 1789, Jabish Perkins was administrator of
William Sperry, dec'd. (Wilkes Co., NC, Will Bk 1, p. 254). Inventory of the
Estate of William Sperry is in Wilkes Co., NC Will Bk 1, p. 262 dated 1789. In
1784, Wm. Smith was the Administrator of W. Sperry (Wilkes Co., NC Will Bk 1,
p. 122).
Between 1784 and 1813, Jabez was in Grayson Co. VA, before removing to
Knox Co., KY.
Jabez Perkins received Knox Co. Circuit Court Certificate No. 160 for 200
acres of land on 5 Oct. 1813. This is now called Tellico Grant No. 575. It was
surveyed on 24 August 1821 and was in the new county of Whitley on the Gelico
River. He paid off his mortgage for the full price of $20.00 to the
Commonwealth of Kentucky on 22 January 1828. See, Tellico Grants, No. 575, Book

Sometime after 1830 Jabez and his family moved to the Bureau/Putnam Co., area
of Illinois. Jabez purchased 80 acres of land in Bureau Co., on 13 July 1835
(IL Pub. Dom. Land Tract Sales, Arch. vol. 708, p. 119). Jesse and William also
purchased 80 acres of land on the same day in the same township as Jabez. Timothy
had purchased two 80 acre tracts in the same township on 20 and 25 June 1835. Jesse
purchased additional tracts of 40, 160 and 80 acres on 7 Sept 1835, and 14 Jan
1836.
Jabez' son Solomon Perkins may have been the Solomon Perkins who purchased
land in Adams Co., IL, on 27 June 1818. This was a Military land bounty (IL Pub.
Dom. Land Tract Sales, Arch. vol. 808, p. 481).
WILL of JABUS PERKINS, of Whitley Co., KY was made 27 Dec 1835, and
probated February Term, 1836.
I Jabus Perkins of the County of Whitley and State of Kentucky being sick
and low in boddy but of Sound Mind and disposing memory and Calling to mind the
mortality of man and knowing that it is appointed for all men to die I make and
ordain this my last will and testament in the followung manner,
To wit, first of all I will my sole to God that gave it and my body to be
buried in a decent and Christian like maner and Touching on my Worldly Estate
which it hath pleased God to bles me with I dispose of in the maner following,
To wit, I give and bequeath to my Son Timothy Perkins One Dollar

ix. Nancy. Born, 1803, in Grayson Co., VA. Died, after 1835. She
married Dempsey White, on 28 Jan 1819 in Whitley Co., KY. He
was a member of the KY Legislature.

2. Timothy2 Perkins (Joseph, 4). Born in New Haven, New Haven Co., CT. Died, during or after 1783. Baptism: 27 Jun 1736, in New Haven, New Haven Co., CT (New Haven First Cong. Church Records, 1:38). Occupation: farmer-loyalist.
According to Wilkes Co, NC, Deed Book 1, 1778-1783, Timothy Perkins
received grant no.55 on Gap Creek in the area that would become Ashe Co., NC.
His brother-in-law, William Sperry, received grant no.127 in the Old Fields.
In 1784, George Morris was appointed Guardian to Gebas Perkins, (Wilkes
Co., NC Will Bk 1, p. 123) this would indicate that Timothy Perkins was dead.
Dow Perkins wrote that Timothy lived into the 1830's in Grayson Co., Virginia
and that he married (2) Ann Sturgill and had one daughter. This writer knows
of no documentation to support that statement.
Timothy and his brother, Joseph, may have been privates in Capt. Benjamin
Perkins' Company of Col. John Phillips' Regiment, Jackson's Creek Militia, Camden
District SC. This unit served under Lord Rawdon during June and July, 1781.
They may have served under Capt. Joseph McDaniel in Capt. Thomas Pearson's Regiment,
Little River Militia, Ninety Six Brigade, for 34 days, sometime between 6 May
and 5 August, 1782 (Murtie June Clark, LOYALISTS IN THE SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN OF
THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR, vol.1, pp. 164,168,313).
He married Mariam Sperry (3), 1765 (?). Children:

In the Name of God Amen This 29th day of Jany AD 1776 -- I Abel Sperry of
Wallingford in the County of Newhaven being weak of body but of sound mind &
memory, thanks be given to God for the same but calling to mind my own
mortality and being apprehensive that my departure is near at hand by reason of
my Advanced Age & my sd weakness of body & knowing it is appointed for man once
to die, I do make this my last Will & Testamt, in the manner following,
first all I do humbly recommend my Soul unto God who gave it hoping in
his mercy thro the merits of Jesus Christ his dear and only Son both for pardon
& accptance and my body I commit to the ground in Christian Burial at the
discretion of my Ex'rs hereafter named nothing doubting but I shall receive the
same again by the mighty power of God and as I humbly hope for a glorious
bodyly resurrection
And touching my worldly Substance which I have been blessed with, after
my just funeral expences and all other my just debts are paid I dispose of in

first I give unto my true & loving Wife Rhoda Sperry so long as she
remains my Widow the whole of my dwelling house and half of my barn and one Cow
and one third part of all the rest of my estate both land and moveables.
Whereas my Eldest Son & my Second Son and my two Eldest Daughters have
already rec'd out of their portion I omit them for the present & come to my
Third Son namely to my Son Abel Sperry and do give unto him the Sum of ten
pounds out of Some part of my Estate at the appraisal of it
And whereas my Second namely Wm Sperry and two of my Daughters Namely
Merriam Perkins the wife of Timothy Perkins & namely Lois Sperry has made a
remove to North Carolina contrary to my desire I do give unto each of them if
ever they return the sum of five shillings.
And I do give unto the heirs of my Eldest daughter who was the Wife of
David Bradley of North Haven who is dec'd the sum of five shillings to be
divided amongst them
And I do give unto my Daughter Mary the first born of my twins the Sum of
two pounds out of my Estate at the Appraisement --
And I do give unto my Daughter Thankfull the second born twin who is the
wife of Solomon Sanford of Litchfield the sum of two pounds to be taken at the

The inventory of the estate of Abel Sperry was returned 13 May 1776 at
L147-9-1 (New Haven Probate Records, volume 12, page 109). An additional
inventory was filed by Rhoda Sperry surviving ExX. She was appointed guardian
to Cloe Sperry (New Haven Probate Records, volume 12, page 159). The
distribution of the Estate was done in 1778 by Daniell Hotchkiss and Alhbel
Porter (New Haven Probate Record, volume 12, pages 270-271).

August 1714 (Rec. First Ch. NH, #708).
An inventory of his estate was taken on 30 Dec 1753 by Samuel Barnes and
Thomas Mansfield. The estate was valued at L67 S2 (New Haven Dist. #8161; New
Haven Probate Packets, 1683-1880, CT State Library Microfilm #1024363 (904)).

Decd." was made on 31 March 1713 by Allen Ball and Samll. Hotchkiss and
presented by "Sarah Moltrop Admex". The estate was valued at 276:13:00. The
following list of "Childrens Names and Ages" was on the inventory: Sarah, 8
years old; Lydia, 5; Hannah, 4; Phebe, 1 (New haven Probate Records, volume 4,
pages 147-148).
Sarah Moltrop Adex. of the Estate of Samuell Moltrop Late of East Haven
Deceased is appointed Guardian to the Minor Children of Samuell Moltrop having
given Sufficient Bond for a faithfull Discharge of yt trust. The Said Admex.
exhibited an accot. of Debts due to the said Estate amounting to L1-7-6 as also
Debts due from the said Estate amounting to L10:18:02 is also laid aside for
bringing up the Children of the said Decd. under 5 years old 16=0-0 and for
Charge of Administration L3=3=0 ye sd sum added to the Inventory makes
L278:00=6 = the 3 Latter Sums being Deducted from the Inventory Remains for
Distribution L247=19=4 -- The said Admex. moveing for a Rule of Distribution of
the said Estate It is therefore ordered by this Court that Division be made of
the said Estate for the widdow 1/3 in the real Estate dureing life and 1/3 in
the personall for Ever and yt the remainder be Equally Divided among the four
Daughters of the said Decd. which Rule yields to the widdow L82=13=1 1/3 and to
each of the Daughters L41-6:6 1/2 A piece. Freeholders appointed to Divide the
same are Ebenezer Chidley Joseph Holt and Daniell Collins all of East Haven
being sth. Sworne according to Law and Return of their Doings to be made to

In 1754 She waived her right to administer the estate of her second
husband Capt. Thomas Wilmot and John Beecher was appointed administrator (New
Haven Probate Records vol. 8, p. 138). In August 1754, she complained to the
Probate Court that her widow's third in the estate of her late husband, Capt.
Thomas Wilmot, had not been laid out as to a 20 acre parcel of land. The court
appointed Daniel Lymen, John Thomas and Joseph Beecher to do so (New Haven
Probate Records vol. 8, p. 382).

Stephen Perkins and Peter Perkins principal and Jonathan Perkins surety

On 4 January 1643(44), Rich: Spery was fined 1s "for defect in their
[gun]cocks" (RCPNH, v.1, p.122). He took the Oath of Fidelity to New Haven on 1
July 1644 (RCPNH, v.1, p.138). On 2 May 1648, "Richard Spery was complained of
for not comeing to watch, but Mr. Goodier answered for hime that when he was
neare comeing from the farme they wanted an oxe, the neager said he was sicke &
left in the woods, so he was faine to goe forth to seeke hime least hee should
be lost" RCPNH, v.1, p.378).

health, and p'fect understanding and memory Calling to mind the transitory
estate of men in this World and not Knowing how soone God may Call me away by
death Doe so cause to make and ordaine this my last will and testament in manor
and forme following, committing my Soule to God yt gave it and my body to the
earth to be decently buryed according to the Discresion of my Executor and

Discharged my will is as to ye Dispose of ye portion of worldly estate wich ye

I Willm Chatterton being at this time in health of body of good and

SIXTH GENERATION
32. Edward6 Perkins. Many believe he was born, 1607, in Hilmorton,
Warwickshire, Eng.? Recent (1998) work by Paula Perkins Mortensen indicates he
was a son of William Perkins, Merchant-Taylor of London. Edward died, circa 1688,
in New Haven, New Haven Col, CT (Between 25 January 1687, date of deeds to sons,
and recordation date of 19 March 1690). Immigration: 1637, in New Haven, New Haven
Colony, CT. Occupation: planter-farmer.
He took the Oath of Fidelity 18 October 1648. New Haven Colony records
show the following land transactions: 7 Nov 1654, he received 5 acres from
Richard Hubball (v.1, p.226); 3 July 1655, he received the house and lott of
Thomas Barnes, which was Stephen Metcalfes (v.1, p. 245); 7 Jan 1667/8, he
receives land from Nathaniel Richards and Rosamond, his wife, of Norwalke (v.2,
213).
The estate of Edward Perkins was appraised at L306 in the 1680 division
of land in the City of New Haven, with Edward receiving 77 acres in the
division.
He made the following deeds to his sons on 25 January 1687/88: Edward
Perkins of New Haven, Planter, "to loving son John Perkins" grant of mansion
house wherein I lately dwelt with its home lot and one half the barn; 8 acres
of arable land in the Suburbs Quarter; 1.5 acres of land in the Suburbs
Quarter; 8 acres in the Yorkshire Quarter; 2 acres in the Neck in Mr
Lambertson's Quarter; 1/2 of 8 acre meadow at the bottom of Yorkshire Quarter
to divide with Jonathan Perkins; 44 acres of the 2nd Division; 26 acres of the

Edward Perkins of New Haven, Planter, "to loving son David Perkins of New
Haven, cordwainer" grant 4.5 acres in the Suburbs Quarter; 2 acres in the
Yorkshire Quarter; 1 acre of meadow in the Yorkshire Quarter; 1 acre in the
Neck; 12 Acres of 2nd Division; and, 25 acres in the 3rd Division. (New Haven,
CT, Register of Deeds, vol. 1, p. 490).
All three of these deeds were recorded on 19 November 1690. It is
presumed that Edward died between 25 January 1687/88 and 19 November 1690.
There are only two other deeds from Edward Perkins recorded in the extant New
Haven Register of Deeds. These are to John Perkins, vol. 1, p. 82, and to
Joseph Moss, vol. 1, p. 273. In none of the deeds is a wife mentioned. It is
therefore presumed that she was dead before 1672.
There is no reference to his estate in either the New Haven Probate
Packets or the New Haven Probate Records.

On 4 December 1732, administration of his estate was
granted to Dan'll Perkins on sufficient bond ( New Haven Probate
Records, volume 6, page 84). An inventory was presented in
January 1733/4 (New Haven Probate Records, volume 6, page 124).
Daniel Perkins presented a further account of administration and
an agreement between the heirs of David Perkins for recording on
8 January 1733/34. The agreement was accepted as a settlement of
the estate. It is difficult to read and is not reproduced in
full. It was signed by the following: William Punchard?;
Mehitable Punchard, by mark; Dan'll Perkins; Caleb Thomas; David
Gilbert; and, Experience Gilbert, by mark (New Haven Probate
Records, volume 6, pages 125-126).
