Governor Ted Kulongoski has proclaimed October 5, 2003 to be Fallen Firefighters Day in Oregon, encouraging all Oregonians to join in its observance.

In the proclamation, Governor Kulongoski notes that more than 100 Oregon firefighters have died in the line of duty in the last century.

In addition, Congress and President George W. Bush have designated October 5, 2003 as National Fallen Firefighters Day as a day to honor firefighters and emergency personnel who have sacrificed their lives to save others by lowering the American flag on all federal buildings to half staff.

A national memorial service will be held at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Additional information on the national memorial event can be found at www.firehero.org.
