    Bette Weathers

    Bette Weathers, 76, died April 21, 2002 in Newport.

    She was born Jan. 20, 1926 in Woodland, Wash., to Nathaniel Earl and Ruby Amelia (Stanley) Scrogin.

    She was raised, educated and spent most of her life in Hood River.

    She married Charles Ira Weathers in Kelso, Wash., on Jan. 7, 1944.

    She worked for Diamond Fruit Growers for 20 years as a fresh fruit picker. She and her husband purchased and operated the Westside Grocery Store from 1967 to 1980. They then retired and moved to Newport.

    She enjoyed knitting and crafts, which she shared with family and charities. After her husband's death, she volunteered at the Newport Senior Center for many years, joined a pinochle club, attended weekly Bible study, and attended the First Christian Church in Newport. (Lincoln Co.)

    She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles Scott and Margaret Weathers of Hood River, grandsons Charles Edward Weathers of Hood River and Steven Ray Weathers of Stanfield; a sister, Shirlee Kerr of Hood River; and a step-brother, Phil Semas of Adelphi, Md. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Weathers, in 1990; her younger son, Steven Douglas Weathers, in 1990; a stepsister, Nancy Semas, in March 2002; and both parents.

    Graveside services were held April 30 at Idlewild Cemetery in Hood River. A memorial service will take place at the First Christian Church in Newport at 1 p.m. Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Gorge, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the local Relay for Life, or a charity of choice in care of Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, Ore. 97031.

    PHILLIPS Marlin E., born Aug. 6, 1937, to Hubert Raymond and Goldie Mae (Scroggins) Phillips in Konawa, OK. He passed away Oct. 17, 1998, at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was employed with Kim Ray, Inc. for 37 years and retired in 1994. He is survived by his mother, Goldie, of Konawa, and his wife, Jewel, of the home; two daughters, Debra Smith and husband Travis of Eufaula, and Judy Cannon and husband Bob of Moore; one son, Donald Edward Phillips; one step-daughter, Junie Byrd and husband Alan of OKC; five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; three brothers and one sister; numerous nieces and nephews as well as a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father who passed away Oct.Cemetery.

    Mrs. Gracie Lee Rutledge, 75, of Portland, who was born January 4, 1929 in Monroe, LA, died Tuesday, February 10, 2004, at her residence in Portland. She was a resident of Portland for the past fifty years, a homemaker and an EMT for the Mainline Ambulance Service in Portland for eight years, and a member of the Portland Baptist Church and the Chicot Home Extension Club.

    She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Roy Hill "Buddy" Rutledge; six children, David Rutledge and wife Linda of Marion, IL, Freda Cunningham Scroggins of Parkdale, Bruce Rutledge and wife Joy of Florence, MS, George Rutledge and wife Brenda of Portland, John Paul Rutledge and wife Beth of Maumelle, and Jennifer Hill and husband Craig of Benton; a sister, Faye Wilhite of West Monroe, LA; fourteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Keith Cunningham; her parents, George and Beatrice Ruddle Hefley; a sister, Georgia Humphrey; two brothers, Allen and W.H. (Dub) Hefley and a niece, Virgie Sadler.

    Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Thursday, February 12, in the Portland Baptist Church with the Revs. Mark Harris and Bobby John Panni officiating. Burial followed services at the Portland Cemetery under the direction of Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home of Hamburg. Pallbearers were Chris, Jared, Vinnie, Aaron, Michael and Holden Rutledge, Craig Hill, Bobby John Panni, Tony Blackwell, Jim Rogers, Brian Smith Cunningham and Don Boudreaux.

    Visitation will be noon until services at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Elias-Smith Funeral Homes and Crematory in Alton. The Rev. Leroy Smith will officiate.

    Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery.

    SCROGGIN, GRACE RUTH O.B. Grace Ruth Scroggin, of Livermore, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2000 after a long illness. She was 90. Grace was born on May 20, 1909, in Port Hope Ontario Canada, to John Jack Dixon and Katherine Wilson Parker. They lived in Klamath Falls, OR before moving to Galt, CA where Jack started a Dairy. Grace graduated from Galt Union High School in 1923, and moved to Sacramento to enroll at Sacto Jr. College where she spent two years. She went on to UC Berkeley where she received a Teaching degree in English, and returned to Klamath Falls, OR to teach at Henley High School. Grace met and married Paul Scroggin and started a family. They eventually moved, with their son Lee Paul, to Sacramento where Grace took a job as a clerk typist for the state of California. Grace gave birth to her second son, Jeffery Ira, and continued her career with Social Services where she became Bureau Chief for the department of social welfare. She retired in 1972 and moved to Spain. She spent most of her time traveling all over Europe, and moved back to Sacramento in 1978. Grace enjoyed traveling and playing bridge. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Tuesday Literary Club, a Spanish club, the League of Women Voters and various charity groups. She is survived by her sons, Lee Scroggin of Carmichael, CA and Jeff Scroggin of Concord, CA, grandchildren, Sherry Fields, Linda Amos, Debbie Krueger and Michael Scroggin and four great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her former husband, Paul. Inurnment will be at the Oddfellows Cemetery in Sacramento, CA.
