George Baker's widow dead. Mrs Clara Skeel Baker 68 years widow of George
Baker who was mayor of Portland from 1917 to 1933 died Friday at 9:35 pm at the
Columbian hospital in Astoria after a attack of apoplexy. She had been admitted
to the hospital about an hour earlier.She had been stricken in the late
afternoon at her home at The Tides in Seaside which she and her late husband had
owned since 1926. The Hughes-Ransom mortuary in Astoria took charge of the body
which will be brought to Portland Monday for burial with Edward Holman & Son
in charge of arrangements.
She was born in New York state was the daughter of Myron W and Katherine
Skeel who later came to Medford Ore to make their home. She was first married to
Robert Galloway former Portland Attorney. After his death she became a
secretary in the law offices of the late John M Logan leaving that postion to marry Mr
Baker 7 Aug 1911. She was his third wife. Following Mr Baker's retirement as
mayor in 1933 she went to Seaside to live and she and Mr Baker made their home
there until his death in 1941.Since then she had stayed on the Tides to be
near her brother-in-law and sister Mr and Mrs Paul A Scroggins who assisted her
in its management. Mr and Mrs Scroggin and their son Major David V Scoggin who
is with the Army in France are the only surviving relatives.
