168. Annie Fisher, Wife of Henry Chapman **
Annie Fisher (daughter of
George, Christian, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born in Penn Township,
Union (now Snyder) County, Pa., on October 30, 1854. Her mother was Susan
Snyder. Early in life she was afflicted in one of her limbs and was lame during
her life, but withall, was able to walk long distances and get around as well
as many people who do not have a handicap. She was a very regular attendant and
member of the First Lutheran Church, which her grand father and
great-grandfather helped to found. For many years she was an officer and
teacher in the Sunday School and an excellent musician, who served as organist
and pianist at many meetings. Even in her older days she is still an active
member of an organized Sunday school class and of the missionary society of her
church. Surely it can be said of her that she went around doing good. From the
time of the organization of the Fisher Family Reunion at Selinsgrove in 1907,
she has been treasurer of the organization, and a better treasurer could not be
desired. For many years she was also a member of the executive committee of the
reunion association, and her wise and helpful counsels were of great value. The
writer, who has lived near her for some years and known her since early
childhood, is willing to vouch for her kindness and Christian fidelity. She is
the owner of the John Adam Fisher Bible and has a few other relics of the older
Fisher generations. In 1908 she married Henry Chapman, a widower, who died
some years later. She was never married before. Henry Chapman had children by
his previous marriage, one of whom married into the Fisher family. Mrs. Chapman
has always been noted for the even tenor of her ways and for her unpublished
charities. She lives at the corner of East Pine and Second Streets, on the Isle
of Que in Selinsgrove, Pa., in a house which, it is said, was built by Captain
John Conrad Weiser, grandson of the Great Conrad Weiser. **

170. George P. Fisher ( 1860
- ? ) **
George P. Fisher (son of
George, Christian, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born in Penn Township,
Snyder County, Pa., on June 9, 1860. In
early 1935 he was living at the corner of Pine and Front Streets, on the Isle
of Que, Selinsgrove, Pa., just one block from his sister, Mrs. Chapman.
George's mother was Susan Snyder. He has been employed at various jobs, but
principally at some form of agriculture. Even though George is now nearly 75
years old, the writer has seen him go to work
early every summer morning on the land which he owns on the island
opposite Selinsgrove in the Susquehanna River . George was a very strong man in
his younger days and could lift a prodigious load. Even at his present age, he
is able to strike his axe as deeply into a log as many a younger man. The
writer lives just two doors from this man and has always known him as a kindly
and helpful neighbor and kinsman. George has always been a strong Republican.
On March 6, 1890, he married Etta Sigfried of Selinsgrove. She was born in
Selinsgrove on October 10, 1862, and is a sister to Hiram and Edward Sigfried,
the apple growers. George Fisher spent a number of years in Los Angeles,
California, but returned to live in Selinsgrove more than a decade ago.

Snyder County, Pa., in 1862. Her mother was Susan Snyder. Early in life she
joined the First Lutheran Church of Selinsgrove and has always been one of the
congregations most active members. She was a regular attendant at church and
Sunday school service and whenever any work needed doing she was one of the
first to offer her services. On December 30, 1885, she married John Thompson, a
widower, and for a number of years they resided on a farm just west of Selinsgrove,
but the later years of their life were spent at their residence on Market
Street in Selinsgrove. After the death of her husband, she lived with her
daughter Mary. Mrs. Thompson is buried at Selinsgrove. **

173. Mary A. Fisher, Wife of Rev.
Robert F. Fetterolf **
Mary A. Fisher (daughter of
George, Christian, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born on the Fisher
farm in Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa., on April 29, 1866. Mary was the
youngest child of George Fisher and his second wife, Susan Snyder. Early in
life Mary became a member of the Lutheran Church. She attended the local public
schools and on June 28, 1892, married the Rev. Robert F. Fetterolf, a Lutheran
Minister, at Selinsgrove, Pa.
In
1907 Mrs. Fetterolf became one of the organizers of the Annual Fisher Reunion
held at or near Selinsgrove and for most of the period to date (1935) she
served as corresponding secretary. She and her sister, Mrs. Chapman, studied
the old Fisher Bible in Mrs. Chapman's possession, translated the information
therein, collected names, constructed trees with trunks, branches, twigs, and
leaves, and wrote the names therein. Thus came into being the famous Fisher
Family Trees which are so proudly displayed at every Fisher reunion. In constructing
these, Mrs. fetterolf was assisted by her children and husband. Many of the
names on the trees were filled in by Rev. Fetterolf and Dr. George H. Fisher,
president of the reunion. Later ones were added by Dr. Charles A. Fisher, for
many years recording secretary but now Historian of the family. Mrs. Fetterolf
was one of the most regular attendants at
the reunion and has done much to keep it alive.
Rev.
Robert P. Fetterolf, husband of Mary Fisher, was born in Centre County, Pa., on
April 8, 1862. He attended the local schools in his home section and then
became a student at Missionary Institute, now Susquehanna University, at
Selinsgrove, Pa. From there he went to Gettysburg College, where he graduated
with the A.B. degree in 1889. Later the A.M. degree was also conferred upon
him. In 1892 he was graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at
Gettysburg and in the same year he was ordained a Lutheran minister. He served
the White Deer charge in Union County and charges at Millersburg, Mercersburg,
and several other places. Because of failing health, Rev. Fetterolf retired
from the ministry for awhile but later entered the teaching profession, serving
as principal of the Lewis Township High School at Millmont for a number of
years. At the time of his death, he was principal of the Liverpool High School
in Perry County. While teaching he occasionally filled Lutheran pulpits as a
supply. Much of the earlier work on the Fisher family trees was done by Rev.
Fetterolf. He died suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Selinsgrove on
September 3, 1928, and is buried in the Union Cemetery there. In 1935, Mrs.
Fetterolf was living with her daughter Mrs. J.M. Riden in Lewistown, Pa. **

Frank L.
Fisher Funeral Saturday
Well Known
Banker Dies of Illness Following Hemorrhage; 72 Years Old.
Funeral
services for Frank L. Fisher; 72, president of the East Tennessee National bank
since 1894, highly esteemed citizen, active churchman, and prominently
identified with the financial and business interests of Knoxville [Tennessee]
for more than 40 years, who died Thursday afternoon at 2:50 o'clock at the Dr.
Reese Patterson hospital in the Acuff building following a brief illness; will
be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the late home, 516 W.
Vine Ave., Rev. Horace Cady Wilson, D.D., pastor of the Second Presbyterian
church, will officiate, and burial will follow in Old Gray cemetery.
Mr.
Fisher had not enjoyed the best of health for the past few years but had been
active in business. He was stricken with a hemorrhage of the nose last
Saturday. He was taken to the hospital Sunday and his condition was considered
serious. He rallied slightly Wednesday and Thursday morning his condition was
considered better and he was reported resting comfortably. Thursday afternoon
he began to sink and he passed away peacefully at 2:50 o'clock.
Mr.
Fisher was one of the best known bankers in Tennessee and the south. He was a
man who was many times asked by business men for advice and counsel. His
ability as a business man as well as a banker made him one of the outstanding
business men of Knoxville. He was quiet and unassuming, a man who loved his
home and manifested great interest in Knoxville during the many years that he
has resided here.
Born in
Pennsylvania
Mr.
Fisher was born in Union County, Pennsylvania, near Mecklenburg, February 25,
1853. When he was 15 years of age, he moved with his parents to Hamblen county
and resided on a farm near Russellville. He received his early education in the
county schools and took advantage of every opportunity to prepare himself for
a business career.
He
came to Knoxville when a young man and secured his first employment as
bookkeeper for Carpenter and Ross, wholesale grocers. In 1879, he secured a
position as bookkeeper at the East Tennessee National bank. His ability
coupled with the determination to make good and the close attention he paid to
his duties attracted the attention of the directors and officials of the bank
and he was elected cashier of the institution. September 6, 1883. Mr. Fisher's
careful attention to his duties as cashier of the bank and his ability to make
friends and please the patrons of the bank made him popular with the business
men of Knoxville and the depositors of the bank. After serving the bank as
cashier for ;more than 10 years, he was elected president of the bank, May 9,
1894, which position he held with honor until the time of his death.
Developed
Business
Mr.
Fisher gave practically all his life to the development of the East Tennessee
National Bank. His ability as an organizer and counselor was recognized by the
citizens and business men of Knoxville and he was often urged to accept public
positions but always declined. He was known to
the business men and his associates as a man of unusual executive ability
and his courteous manner won him a host of friends.
In
addition to being president of the bank he was also prominently connected with
various business concerns of Knoxville and for many years has been a member of
the board of directors of several of the business concern, corporations and
institutions of Knoxville. At the time of his death, he was a member of the
board of directors of the Fidelity Trust company, Knoxville Power and Light,
Standard Knitting mills, Cherokee Knitting mills, Harvey Coal company,
Knoxville Knitting mills and other corporations.
Active in
Religious Life
From
early childhood, Mr. Fisher has always exhibited interest in religious work.
For many years he has been an active member of the Second Presbyterian church
and was a consistent attendant at practically all Sabbath day services. He gave
freely of his money to all worthy charitable causes and for the advancement of
the church.
Mr.
Fisher was united in marriage on February 6, 1883, to Miss Ella Locke, daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Locke, well known residents of Knoxville for many
years.
Surviving
the deceased are his widow; two sisters, Mrs. James Rubel, Louisburg, Pa., and
Mrs. Utsman, who lives with her daughter, Mrs. C. A. Beard at Athens, Tenn;
also a brother J.N. Fisher, well known resident of Morristown, who is president
of the City National bank of that city.
Mr.
Fisher for many years has resided at the Fisher homestead, 516 West Vine
avenue. Col C.H. Harvey, a brother-in-law of Mr Fisher, and a daughter, Miss
Edith Harvey, have made their home with Mr and Mrs. Fisher.
Scores
of friends called at the Fisher home Thursday and today to extend their
heartfelt sympathy to members of the family during their hours of bereavement
and sorrow. In the death of Mr. Fisher, Knoxville loses one of its best known,
most highly respected citizens and a business man whose place in life will be
difficult to fill.

Obituary of Mrs. Ella Locke Fisher, Wife of Frank
Luther Fisher, as it appeared in the Knoxville, Tennessee, newspaper on
January 2, 1950. Mrs. Fisher died January 1, 1950, and was buried on January 2,
1950.
Mrs.
Fisher, Helper of Youth, Dies at 91
Late Banker's Widow Was Pillar in Church
Mrs. Ella Locke Fisher,
widow of Frank L. Fisher, who was president of the former East Tennessee
National Bank, and herself a modest, tireless benefactor of Presbyterian school
students and in Presbyterian mission activities, died yesterday at her home at
118 Towanda Trail. She was 91.
Mrs.
Fisher had been in poor health and inactive the last several years. She was
born in Rogersville, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Locke, of prominent Massachusetts families. Her family moved
here when she was a year old.
Survivors Listed
Kindly, white-haired, Mrs.
Fisher leaves one sister, Mrs Ralph Mountcastle, of Knoxville; four nieces,
Mrs. Merrill D. Arnold and Miss Edith Harvey, Knoxville; Mrs Robert Snowden
Hughes, Ark., and Mrs. A.C. Neave, New Canaan, Conn.; and a nephew, Frank
Mountcastle, of Elizabeth, N.J.
Services
were this afternoon at the Mann Chapel. The officiating minister was Dr.
Clifford Barbour, pastor of Second Presbyterian Church of which Mrs. Fisher
was a member and sparking force for 74 years. Burial in Old Gray Cemetery.
Church Worker in Teens
Over
the years many distinctions in church and church mission programs came to the
gentle Knoxville woman. She turned her attention to that field while in her
teens, after attending boarding schools in the East. During almost three
quarters of a century at Second Presbyterian, Mrs. Fisher had held virtually
every office open to a woman member.
She
organized the first teacher training class there and was its first teacher, and
was president of the Women's Association at the church for 1924 and 1925.
Charter Member of Society
Mrs.
Fisher was a charter member of the Presbyterial Society of Presbytery Union,
which was organized in 1884 at a Presbyterian Tennessee Synodical Society
meeting which she attended. She was president of the Presbyterial Society from
1920 through 1924.
Her
interest in church home mission work was particularly directed to Swift
Memorial School, Negro junior college in her native Rogersville; to Sunset
School near Newport and to Tusculum College near Greeneville. Many a young
student owes his or her opportunity for formal schooling to Mrs. Fisher's
contributions. Her contributions to Sunset made possible the education of many
of its students, and it was through her assistance that the school acquired a
modern dispensary. School authorities wished to name it for her, but she
declined the honor through modesty.
Life Membership Conferred
In recognition of her long
service, the U.S. Presbyterian Church made the Knoxvillian a life member of
both its boards of National and Foreign Missions. She was also a leader in
Ossoli, joining that group shortly after it was organized here.
Her
husband, head of the predecessor bank to Park National, died in 1925. They had
been married 40 year.

186. Laura Jane Fisher ( 1855 - 1926 )**
Laura Jane Fisher (daughter
of Daniel, Christian, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born in Union
County, Pa., on June 5, 1855, and died July 21, 1926, at the home of her
daughter Mrs. Margaret Beard in Athens, Tennessee. Laura's mother was Amelia
Laudenslager. With her parents in the spring of 1868, Laura moved from Pennsylvania to Russellville,
Tennessee, where she grew to womanhood. On Jan 19, 1876, she married John R.
Bewley, who was the son of John Grenade Bewley and Marina [Harold] Bewley.
Three children were born of this marriage before the death of John R. Bewley on
August 15, 1886. About 1890, she married John Thomas Utsman, who was born March
31, 1863, in North Carolina, probably Wilkes County, and died in Johnson City,
Washington County, Tn., on . Two children were born of this second marriage.
Laura
was tall, dark haired, attractive, but by her mid-sixties her hair had turned completely
white. She was a seamstress of extraordinary talent, and for a time after
separating from her second husband, she supported herself and her children
working as a seamstress at the Veterans Hospital in Johnson City, Tn. Later,
when her brother Frank Fisher discovered her dilemma, he began providing her
funds and continued until the end of his life. Laura died just six months after
her brother Frank's death.
On
one of Laura's trips to Iowa to visit her son, Cecil, she brought him two hand
sewn white silk dress shirts which she had made, and it is said these were
beautiful shirts which he wore for dress for many years. Laura spent the winter
of 1923 with her son Cecil Utsman in Iowa and during that visit presented him with a 12 Gauge Winchester,
Model-12, shotgun for his twenty-sixth birthday. This shotgun is now in the
possession of Cecil's son Ralph - 1992.

187b. Michael Oliver Fisher (
1866 - ? )**
Michael Oliver Fisher (son
of Michael, Christian, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born on the Isle
of Que, Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa., in 1866. His mother was Sarah Hoot.
When Michael Oliver was about one year old, his father died, and when he came
of age, he and his sister inherited their father's farm. They were the fifth
generation of Fishers to own it in a continuous line since 1773, when John Jacob Fisher purchased it from the
heirs of Conrad Weiser. Michael Oliver, or "Ollie" as he is commonly
called, has always lived on the farm on which he was born. He is a hard working
man, fond of the sports of hunting, fishing, and trap shooting; and a great
lover of dogs and horses. He has hunted big game in Canada and smaller game in
other sections. He has always been a member of the Republican Party and is a
strong adherent and a liberal supporter of the Lutheran Church.
As
a boy the writer considered it the greatest delight to be permitted to sit in
the "office" on "Ollie's" farm and listen to the hunting
and fishing stories of the older men who gathered there every evening. And here
a word about the "office" is in order. It was a small building about
twelve by sixteen feet containing a stove, chairs, benches, a small table, and
a cupboard for the hunting equipment and ammunition belonging to
"Ollie" and those who happened to be living with him. This little
building and all of its furnishings are still in existence today (c.1935).
Summer and winter, year in and year out, the male inhabitants of that section
gathered in this little building every evening for a social period; and between
eating apples and popcorn and smoking the pipes that have done yoeman service
these many years, they indulged in discussions of the state of the country and
the nations of the world. Whether a good story teller, a good
conversationalist, or just a good listener, everyone was welcome. The
"Office was not only visited by those who lived nearby, but many a citizen
of Selinsgrove and other places far away found it necessary to join the
convivial congregation for a winter afternoon or a long winter evening. Many a
friendly game of cards, checkers, and dominoes were played here by those not
interested in the conversation. And many a plan for the help and betterment of
the community was developed through the discussions which took place at the
"Office." Some of the men, living and dead, who found it convenient
on occasions to take part in the good fellowship and discussions at the office
were: Dr. A.R. Potteiger, Newton Fisher, Isaac Seiler, Norman Fisher, R. Lloyd
Schroyer, Jacob A. Fisher, Calvin Forry, Samuel B. Forry, James J. Hendricks,
and others. Michael Oliver Fisher never married. He is a man of medium build,
and a kindly face. One is better for having known him.

188.
William Newton Fisher ( 1846 -
1925 )**
William Newton Fisher (son
of Christian, Christian, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born on the Isle
of Que, in Penn Township, Union (now Snyder) County, Pa., on October 10, 1846,
and died in the house in which he was born on April 12, 1925. His mother was
Lydia Hendershot. His father died when he was only fourteen years old, and
William was early called upon to take the burden of the only man of the family.
On November 3, 1867 he married Elizabeth Ferry (Forry), who was born in the
same township on September 9, 1850, and died on August 16, 1920. Newton or
"Newt", as he was commonly called, was not a large man, and within
the writer's memory, always wore a long full beard like his cousin William A.
Fisher. Newton and his cousin William looked very much alike.
Newton
was a farmer and was of the fourth generation of Fishers to till the soil where
he lived. He was a member and a regular attendant of the Lutheran Church, and
in politics he was a Republican. In his
younger days Mr. Fisher traveled over a great part of the United States and was
well versed in public affairs. On one occasion when the writer was a boy, he
helped to do the threshing on "Newt's" farm and has never enjoyed a
better meal anywhere than was received on that occasion from the hands of Mrs.
Fisher and her daughters. These Fishers were very kindly folks, generous to a
fault, and the writer remembers them as some of the finest people he ever knew.
They are buried in one of the cemeteries near Selinsgrove.

Sarah Fisher (daughter of

was a twin sister of Matilda. Her mother was Lydia Hendershot. Sarah's father
died when she was about six years old, and she, her brother, and her sister
were reared by their widowed mother. Sallie, as she was commonly known,
attended the local school and about 1872 became a student at the Susquehanna
Female College in Selinsgrove, one of the forerunners of Susquehanna University
and at that time conducted by Dr. William Noetling, . On February 9, 1875, she
married Dennis H. Snyder of the Fishers Ferry section of Northumberland
County, Pa. Mr Snyder was born on August 26, 1847, at Sunbury, Pa., and died on
December 30, 1922. In his youth he engaged in mercantile business and for many
years he was head of the mercantile firm of Dennis H. Snyder and Company on
Market Street in Sunbury, Pa., at one time
the largest general store in that city. Mr. Snyder was a gentleman and
businessman of the old school, a type of which we have far too few today. The
writer, as a green country boy, thought of him as a merchant prince and often
wished that he might grow up to emulate him., never thinking at the time that
he would ever do such an unthought of thing as write a biographical sketch of
him in his connection with the Fisher family. Mr and Mrs Snyder were Christian
gentle folks of the highest type.

December 31, 1823. The Bucks for many years lived in the small two story stone
house along the Selinsgrove-Freeburg Highway, near the ruins of the old
gristmill and the Millers School House. Neither Mr. or Mrs. Buck were large of
stature. He was an excellent carpenter, and many buildings still standing in
Snyder County bear the marks of his handicraft. The writer recalls with great
pleasure the time Mr. Buck built a canoe for his father. Jacob M. Duck served
as a soldier in the Civil War, but the record of his service is not in the hands

Daniel Fisher (son of John,

Snyder) County, Pa., on April 13, 1835. His mother was Lydia Witmer. While
still a young man in the days before
the Civil War, Daniel went west, and when the war began he enlisted in the
Union Army in Illinois. He was killed in Missouri in one of the early battles of
the war. Of four brothers to serve in the Civil War, Daniel was the only one
to lose his life. Daniel's brother Jeremiah lost a leg in the service of his
county, and Henry W. Fisher, one of the four brothers, was still living in January,
1935, at the home of his son in Beloit, Wisconsin. The U.S. War Department
reports that Daniel Fisher enlisted for three years as a Private in Company K,
17th Regt., Illinois Infantry, at Peoria, Illinois, on May 25, 1861, and was
mortally wounded at the battle of Fredericktown, Missouri on October 21, 1861.

214. John Peter Fisher ( 1838
- 1913 )**
John Peter Fisher (son of
John, John, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born in Penn Township, Union
(now Snyder) County, Pa., on November 10, 1838, and died near the place where
he was born on November 1, 1913. His mother was Lydia Witmer. Four of his
brothers were in the Union Army during the Civil War, but due to a physical
handicap, John was not accepted. His brother Daniel lost his life in the
conflict. When John Peter's father died in 1861, he and Adam J. Fisher (his
father's first cousin and the writer's grandfather) were appointed
Administrators of the estate. Some time after the death of her first husband,
John Peter's mother married Samuel Ritter. John Peter built the brick house on
the east side of the Susquehanna Trail at the Middle Creek Bridge, and the
house on the opposite side of the street was built by his grandfather. John
Peter was a short, stout man who in his
latter days always wore a beard and was quite bald. He was a jovial man and
Johnny as he was commonly called, pulled many a joke on those not quite as
quick witted as he. His entire life was spent in agricultural pursuits in Penn
Township, and he was highly successful, raising some of the best crops of
wheat, corn and potatoes in the township. He held numerous township offices,
was a Republican, and a staunch Lutheran. On December 25, 1863, he married
Maria Woodruff of the same township, who was born on September 23, 1842. John
Peter and Maria are buried in the Baker Cemetery at Selinsgrove. Mrs. Fisher
was known as a kind and indulgent mother, who always had a spic and span home.
In her latter years she was somewhat deaf, but this did not keep her from
attending religious services and other gatherings.

Henry W. Fisher (son of
John, John, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born in Penn Township, Union
(now Snyder) County, Pa., on November 30, 1842, and at the time of this writing
(January, 1935) was living at the home of his son J.Absalon Fisher at 842 Bluff
Street, Beloit, Wisconsin. So far as is known to the writer, he is the oldest
living Fisher, and has been for some years past. He spent his young manhood on
his father's farm and early in the Civil War became a soldier in the Pennsylvania
Infantry. Three of Henry's brothers also served in the Union Army, and his
brother Daniel was killed in the conflict. Soon after the war on July 22, 1866,
he married Ellen, daughter of Moses Fisher. Ellen was his second cousin. She
was born in Penn Township and died at Elkhart, Indiana. Soon after their
marriage they moved to northern Indiana and spent the latter days of their life
in Elkhart. Henry was quite a large man and usually wore a beard. He was one of
the organizers of the Fisher reunions held at Elkhart, Indiana, and in earlier
days also attended the Fisher reunion held at Selinsgrove, Pa. Henry was an
active worker in the United Brethren Church and often acted as lay preacher for
his own and other congregations. The writer has a number of letters written by
this man in his 90th year, which show a
keen memory of family history and affairs.

Pa., on December 14, 1845. His mother was Susan Lloyd. His father died when he
was eleven years old, and his mother died when he was sixteen, leaving himself,
a younger brother, and two younger sisters. On September 17, 1862, when less
than seventeen years of age, he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 147th
Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, under Captain Charles Selin Davis and served
until June 6, 1865, at which time he was mustered out of the Federal Service
with his organization. After the war he went to Scranton, where he was employed
in various enterprises owned by the Pardee family, General Ario Pardee having
been at one time Colonel of the 147th Regiment. On December 28, 1866, he
married a Miss Williams, who was born in 1848 and died at Selinsgrove, Pa., on
December 20, 1924. After working a number of years in the Scranton section,
Edward and family moved to Selinsgrove, where he followed various lines of work. For many years he was janitor of the
Trinity Lutheran Church in Selinsgrove, where he was also a member. Edward was
a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and whenever his military company
had a reunion, usually annually, Edward cooked a succulent old fashioned army
bean soup in a large iron kettle. In earlier days Edward prepared this bean
soup for several of the Fisher Reunions, and many gallons were consumed by
hungry Fishers. For many years Edward was on the Executive Committee of the
Fisher Family Reunion Association at Selinsgrove. He was a hard working man
and well liked by those who knew him. He died in the Veterans Hospital at
Philadelphia on May 13, 1926.

today. The Rissingers were members of the Lutheran church, and the writer
believes that Jacob Rissinger was a soldier in the Civil War. It is said that
Mrs. Rissinger died on July 4, 1907, but there may be some doubt about this
date. She is buried in the Baker Cemetery.

Samuel Boyer Kantz ( 1836 - 1872 )**
Samuel Boyer Kantz (son of
Mary Fisher, John George, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born about a
mile east of the village of Freeburg, Union (now Snyder) County, Pa., on June
11, 1836. He was the second son of John Kantz (probably a son of Christian
Kantz) and Mary Fisher. Samuel died of Typhoid Fever at the same place where he
was born on May 1, 1872. As a boy and young man he helped his father bring this
farm to a high state of cultivation and erect new buildings on it. The gray
limestone dwelling on this farm built by Samuel's father is, to this day, one
of the most beautiful along the Selinsgrove-Freeburg Highway and is a community
landmark. Samuel or Boyer, as he was called by some, had unusual ability in
animal husbandry and became one of the best live stock judges in the section.
He secured the education offered by the local schools and for two years was a
teacher in Washington Township. On the death of his father, he became owner of
the parental farm and continued its operation until his untimely death. In
1857, he married Sarah Wetzel, daughter of Henry Wetzel, of Middle Creek
Township, the same county. During the greater part of his majority, he served
as a Justice of the Peace for Washington Township, the township in which he
lived, and it is said of him that he administered justice and other legal
matters with a celerity and ease not often shown by those who were fully
trained in the law. He was a member of the Democratic Party and a strong advocate
of temperance. He was actively affiliated with a protestant church and was a
member of the Masonic Lodge of Selinsgrove. It can well be said of him that he
was grateful to his Creator, loyal to his country, and fraternal to his
fellowmen. His wife, Sarah Wetzel, was
born in Middle Creek Township, Union (now Snyder) County, Pa., on February 3,
1834, and died at Freeburg, Pa., on February 27, 1917. She was of German
descent and her father was once the owner of a smithy, rifle barrel boring, and
sickle factory near Kreamer. (The writer once owned the site on which the
factory stood; it is now a summer cottage site). Henry Wetzel was an excellent
marksman, a good mechanic, and a fine German scholar. After the death of her
husband in 1872, Mrs. Kantz with her younger children moved to a home in
Freeburg which she purchased. Here she continued to live an industrious and
useful life until her death 45 years after that of her husband. She was an
excellent housekeeper, and her home and garden were among the finest in the
community. Several of her daughters occupy the old homestead in Freeburg at the
time of this writing (January 1935).

258 Isaac Norman Fisher ( 1848 - 1903 )**
Isaac Norman Fisher (son of
Samuel Fisher, John George, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born in the
stone mansion on the Isle of Que, Penn Township, Union (now Snyder) County,
Pa., on April 2, 1848. Norman succeeded to the ownership of the farm where he
was born which four generations of Fisher ancestors had owned before him. The
house in which he was born and died was built by his grandfather. His mother
was Henrietta Fisher. Norman, as he was commonly known, was a strong and robust
man with a strong voice. He loved fishing. His wife, Lydia Forry, was born in
the same Township on September 19, 1846, and died in June of 1922. Norman was
a farmer all of his life. After his death on October 3, 1903, his widow
remained on the farm and with the help of her children successfully operated
it for a number of years. Later it was sold to the late Dr. Charles T. Aikens,
and this was the first time it had been out of Fisher ownership for about
one-hundred and fifty years. Norman and his wife were members of the Republican
Party and the Lutheran Church.

James A. Fisher ( 1846 - 1909
)**
James A. Fisher (son of Henry,
John Jacob, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born in what is now Snyder
County or Northumberland County, Pa., on February 8. 1846, and died at Atkins,
Arkansas on June 6, 1909. When seven years of age, his parents moved to
Illinois. James grew to young manhood during the Civil War, and toward the end
of that war he enlisted in the 108th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. On
December 19, 1869, he married Miss D.A. Dwyer of Spring Lake, Illinois, who was
born on December 20, 1851, and died at Alta Vista, Kansas on October 10, 1922.
In the spring of 1870 James and his wife moved to Burlingame, Kansas, and the
next year took up a homestead two miles southwest of Alta Vista, Morris County,
Kansas. Here they resided until 1908 when, because of his failing health, they
moved from the farm to the new home they had built in Alta Vista.
Six
children were born to James and his wife, three of whom preceded him in death.
James came to Alta Vista when the country was new and always identified himself
with those movements which tended to the betterment of the community. When the
Methodist Church was organized in the White School House, he was one of the
original members, was active in church affairs, and was an official of the
congregation. In his school district, he served as an officer for many years.
He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic [Federal Army during the
Civil War], and a charter member of the A.O.U.W. lodge. For twelve years he
suffered with a kidney complaint, and during his last two years it gave him
little rest. About six weeks before his death, he went to Arkansas Springs to
try the mineral water there, but no relief from his malady was to be had in
this life. Realizing that he was growing worse, he attempted to reach home, but
got no further than Atkins, Arkansas, where he died. Mrs. Fisher and daughter
Clara arrived in Atkins a few days before James died and were with him at the
end. His remains were brought to Alta Vista for interment, and on the afternoon
of June 9th, 1909, the funeral services were held in the Baptist Church and
conducted by the Rev. A.W. Crippen, James's former pastor, assisted by the Rev.
N.J. Adams, the present pastor, and the Rev. G.O. Heide, pastor of the Baptist
Church. The interment was made in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Six of his old
comrades of the G.A.R. carried his body to the grave. His work is done. He has
gone to his reward. His memory is cherished by many. (Writer's note: The above
obituary, with several additions, was taken from an Alta Vista, Kansas,
newspaper of early June 1909).
A
statement from the Adjutant General of Illinois follows: "James A. Fisher
enlisted September 23, 1864, for service in the Civil War and was assigned to duty
as a Private in Company H, 108th Infantry for a period of one year. He was
mustered into the service at Springfield, Illinois, on Sept 23, 1864, and
discharged on May 26, 1865, at Madison, Indiana. Description: Age 18 years;
height, 5 ft 5 1/2 inches; Hair, Light; Eyes, Hazel; Complexion, fair;
Occupation, farmer; Born, Snyder County, Pennsylvania; Residence at time of
enlistment, Cincinnati, Tazewell County, Illinois.

337. Jacob A. Fisher ( 1863 - 1941 )**
Jacob
A. Fisher (son of Adam J., John Jacob, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was
born in Penn Township, Snyder County, Pa., on October 7, 1863. He attended the
rural schools of his township and for
one year grammar school at Selinsgrove. He is a great reader and in his younger
days was a fine pen and pencil artist. His mother was Barbara Woodling,
descendant of John George Woodling, a Revolutionary soldier. Jacob spent his younger days on his parents
farm and about 1886 became a tenant on the same farm when his father retired.
Being of aggressive ideas, he early added vegetable and truck farming to the
general farming and about 1892 began to take his products to the markets at
Sunbury and Shamokin, where he was able to obtain higher prices. In 1907 he
rented the farm and moved to Selinsgrove, where for several years he conducted
a grocery store in addition to huckstering to the Sunbury market. About 1912 he
sold the ancestral farm, which he had inherited at his mother's death, to
William Musselman. Jacob continued in the livelihood of market gardening in
Selinsgrove during the summer months and in the winter lived in the
Pennsylvania Colony at Vero Beach, Florida, which he founded in 1921. In his
younger days on the farm, he engaged in teaming during the winter months,
hauling logs to the mills and lumber to the markets. He was a member of the
Lutheran Church and of the Republican party. For a number of years he was a
member of the Lutheran Church and of the Republican party. For a number of
years he was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. He was also a member of the
National Geographic Society and for thirteen years he was tax assessor for the
borough of Selinsgrove. He also served as an officer of his church. On December
24, 1884, he married Clara Ella, daughter of Lieutenant John George Herrold and
his wife, Rosalina Roush. Ella as she was commonly called was born in Chapman
Township, Snyder County, Pa., on September 17, 1865. In her youth she became a
member of the Evangelical Church, but upon marriage joined the church of her
husband. Her family was of the Democratic party, but as a voter she today
(c.1935) classes herself as a Republican. The writer, son of the above couple,
owes much to his parents in the matter of advice and encouragement, spiritually
and otherwise.

Calvin Fisher Moyer (son of
Amelia Fisher, John Michael, John Adam, John Jacob, Sebastian) was born in Freeburg, Snyder County, Pa., on
September 18, 1843. His father was George C. Moyer. Uncle Calvin, as he was known
by many, attended the Freeburg Academy and the New Berlin Normal School and
taught in the schools of Snyder County. For years he was editor and part owner
of the Freeburg Courier, a wellknown weekly paper. Most of the information on
the descendants of John Michael Fisher was compiled by Calvin and kindly loaned
to the writer by his heirs. Calvin was a man of great integrity and a scholar
of no mean ability. Many sections of family history were gathered and written
by him, and it is unfortunate that not more of them were published. It is said
that he left a "History of the Morr Family" in manuscript at his
death and also some information on the Moyer family. Calvin lived alone for
many years in the beautiful stone house on the main street of Freeburg that
once was his parent's home. He was a member of the Reformed Church, the Masonic
Lodge, and the Republican party. He was never married. For many years he was a
member of the Executive Committee of the Fisher Family Reunion. He died on
January 6, 1933, and is buried at Freeburg.
