Spurred by Federal legislation in 1850, joined Savannah Volunteer Guards in 1851.
Pre Civil War partner with General Alexander R. Lawton. After the war became part of Jackson, Lawton, and Basinger at end of 1866.
Active in reorganization of Savannah Guards Militia; promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
Helped design GA state flag.
