Ragged Point Lighthouse, Ragged Point, Off Coles Point, Virginia

Original photo submitted by Susan Rager

Susan writes..."The inscription on the back is in my dad's handwriting and says "This is Ragged Point Light. Wes Lewis and myself (Edward Godman) are waving to you." This is dated August 20, 1933. The Ragged Point Lighthouse was at Ragged Point off Coles Point, VA, and, as I indicated to you earlier is now the site of an unmanned light facility. The old house which you see in the photo was dismantled, and all that remains is the screw-pile base. It is located in the Potomac River, and the River is Maryland all the way to the low-water mark in Virginia. This lighthouse used to mark a sandbar - the sandbar is still there, just submerged now. When I was a child, you could walk a long way out on Ragged Point sandbar towards the light."
