Seul Choix Pointe Lighthouse Celebrated Christmas

Seul Choix (pronounced Sish a wah by the locals) means "only choice". This name originated when the sailors, caught out in a storm on Lake Michigan, went there for shelter. Seeing it was a bay and their only choice or "Seul Choix", they stopped. The French fur traders (voyageurs) of the early 1800s also found Seul Choix Pointe to be the only harbor of refuge in the area. It is located sixty miles west of the Straits of Mackinac in the upper peninsula near Gulliver, Michigan.

Now owned by the Gulliver Historical Society, Seul Choix was all decorated for Christmas 1999. This was the club members first attempt to be open after the first of November. Members made live wreaths and hung them in all the windows. Every nook was decorated in a special way throughout the keeper’s quarters. The tower was lighted up and strings of Christmas lights enhanced the walk around the top of the tower.

This is a working lighthouse with keepers house, fog horn building museum and a wonderful gift shop. If in the area between Memorial Day and the end of October, stop and climb the tower and tour the facility.
