Preface II

This is the World Wide Web version of a booklet published privately in 1991. The primary editing for this version has been the removal of data on individuals known or assumed to be alive. Their names have also been removed from the index. This work is being made available to assist other Michael surname researchers. Although the author has no specific plans to upgrade this work, it is likely that additional material will be added in the near future. Undoubtedly, there have been some programming errors. Please forgive the author. He welcomes comments, corrections, and additions. If possible, provide the sources for such suggestions.

Preface

This manuscript is dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Elsie Browning, formerly of Lebanon, Linn Co., Oregon, whose work on the ancestors of Jared Michael provided the majority of the material on that aspect of the manuscript.

The collecting of material for this work began when I first became interested in genealogy. It was then necessary to visit Portland and Eugene Oregon regularly to care for my mother. There was considerable free time and little to do. Thus, it seemed natural to use that time in libraries. Looking up records on ancestors and their families was found to be an enjoyable but sometimes frustrating activity. The Jared Michael family of Linn County, Oregon, was one about which I had some data from family notes and one that was mentioned in pioneer collections. Like many such projects, it was not "completed" when intensive research was suspended. Circumstances have now changed and it seems unlikely that I will be spending additional time on the Michael line in the near future. Thus, it seems appropriate to summarize my notes and make that summary available to others. It is hoped that this will assist others with similar interests.

I regret that some of the references are incomplete. They are the result of my inadequate note taking in the early stages of study. Also, there undoubtedly are errors, both mine and in the sources from which the data was taken. These could have happened either during the original note taking or in typing this manuscript. I am sure that others who have worked in genealogy will understand. If I were in a position to do so, I would recheck as many of the original sources as possible and also follow up on leads that came to light during the preparation of this work. I am afraid it will have to be left to future workers.

I have used information in notes and letters sent by others and have tried to indicate these sources where it was recorded in my notes. I hope that none of those workers feel hurt if I have failed to mention them. I felt it important to provide as much information as possible in one location even if the source is no longer apparent.

There is no intent to establish a priority by making this manuscript available at this time. I do not expect to work further along this line on my own. However, the material is on a computer file and thus relatively easy to modify. If others would like to see additional material added, I am sure that we can work together and provide updates either with appropriate acknowledgement of their contribution or with them listed as a co-author. Others are welcome to use this material but it would be appreciated if appropriate credit is given in their works. I will be pleased to provide photocopies and other details from my files if others wish them.

To those who use this material, good luck, but be careful. I have found that not everything you see in print is true. Errors occur and may be com-pounded by other researchers. Where possible, recheck the original.

Notes on format
A * in front of the name of a child indicates there is an entry under that name in the next generation.
The index contains all names except those of the parents who are listed in the previous generation.
