Other PEARL-PERRILL families in Frederick Co., Maryland
In view of some recently interest expressed in Pearl and Perrill families in Maryland, it seemed appropriate to post this manuscript at this time. It was written many years ago and distributed to other researchers but not "published." It undoubtedly should be updated. However, it seemed more important to post what is available than delay for what might be a considerable time. Please forgive me for any coding errors that may have occurred. I would like to hear about them. I hope this will be an aid to other researchers.
There are a couple of records of the surname PEARL or PERLE (which may be Pearley) in early Maryland records. One is Henry PERLE who was transported in 1674. (Skordas, Gust. 1968). There is a marriage of James PEARLE 2 April 1682 to Mary GLOVER (Old Somerset on the eastern shore of Maryland. by Clayton Torrence 1935, re 1973). In 1686/7, a James Pearle apparently made a will (Magruder, James M. Jr. 1967. Index of Maryland Colonial Wills, 1634-1777, in the Hall of Records, Annapolis, Md., 4, 238). A William Pearle of Kent Co., made a will in 1692 (Magruder, 6, 18) but this is probably a Pearly rather than a Pearl.
The earliest records I have that seems to be connected with Frederick Co., Maryland are reported to me by Dr. Samuel B. Hackney. From the book "This was the life" by Rice p 89 he finds
"Wm. Marshall and Robert PERLE sued (?) William Snowden in the November term of the County Court of Frederick Co., Maryland in 1751." and on p 134
"Robert PERLE security for John Donaldson DeButts in his marriage." On p 60,
"Robert PEARL was fined in the County Court of Frederick County, Maryland for "swearing four (?) oaths" living in Mannor Hundred, Frederick County, MD." Presumably the same
Robert Pearl made a will in Frederick Co. 3 Sept 1765 (Burns, Maryland Will Book p 351 and Magruder). In it he names children Daniel, Basil, James, Charles, Thomas, Ann Marshall, and Catherine Dean. In 5 Sept 1774,
Daniel Pearl, (probably a son of the above Robert), made a will naming a brother Basil and children Ann Burges, Joseph, Robert, Jeremiah, and Sary Pearl (Magruder vol 40, p 179 and Magruder 1934, p 57). From Oaths of fidelity to Maryland by Carothers, Vol I, p 28,
"Charles PEARL - took oath of fidelity to Maryland in Frederick County, Maryland, 1777".
There are a number of marriages and births/baptisms in the IGI and some other sources for Frederick Co. There are other marriages some of which may be from Frederick Co., in the book Maryland Marriages, 1778-1800 by Barnes. Those of obvious relation will be covered below.
Basil Pearl is listed on both the 1790 and 1800 census for Frederick Co., Maryland (1790 p 70, 1800 p 1?) with 1-3-5 and 11001-02000-00 household counts. There is a Bazel PERREL/Bazil PERRIL in Wayne twp., Greene Co., Pennsylvania in the 1810 (p 31) and 1830 (p 380) census who appears to be the same individual according to Lawrence A. SHIELDS, Sr. (LAS). He indicates that a Lawrence and a Daniel PEARL are also in Pennsylvania at that time and that Daniel died there about 1835 leaving a will which is now missing. Basil is assumed to have died in Greene County PA about 1835 but there appears to be no specific evidence for that. LAS assumes that Bazil is the father of the other two (Lawrence and Daniel). Of unknown connection, I find that there is a Bassel PERREL born ca 1815 in Virginia with family in Wayne twp., Greene Co. PA in the 1850 census.
Robert, Daniel, Samuel, or Thomas are known to be present in the area in 1790 or before and might be the father of Basil.
From the census counts in 1790 and 1800, it would appear that Bazil was born before 1755 and had at least 2 sons born between 1774 and 1784, one born between 1784 and 1790 and a fourth born between 1790 and 1800. There appear to be two daughters born before 1784 and 2 more between 1784 and 1790. Lawrence Pearl was born 1793 in Maryland and would fit as the 4th son. Others who appear to be younger than Basil PEARL and thus might be sons are William PERRIL who married Sarah PADGETT 14 June 1783, Alexander PERRIL who married Grace BEAUMONT (possibly daughter of William) at the German Reform Church, Frederick 29 May 1792, Basil PERILL who married Sus. (Susanna?) STEAL at the same church 28 Feb 1802, Samuel PERRILL who married Mary ATKINS there 23 July 1811, James PEARL who married Priscilla ADKINS 13 April 1799, and Thomas PERRIL who married Zilpha GALLIMAN 5 Mar 1791. None of these seem to be present in the 1850 census of Maryland, but a Thomas PEARL, age 70 born MD is present in Grayson Co., KY, 1850 census and he died there, aged 76, 5 Oct. 1856. Just wild guesses but their births might have been: William 1762, Thomas 1770, Alexander 1771, James 1778, Basil 1781, and Samuel 1790. Thus, James, Basil and Samuel might be sons in the household in 1790.

My first census record for Lawrence PEARL is 1830 p 375, Whitely twp, Greene Co. PA (as PERRILL). I do not find 1840 or 1850 records in my file. but LAS reports him in Morgan Co. OH in 1850. The 1860 record is p 531 res. 2034-1896, Morgan Co., York twp., PA. and lists

Comments on certain other PEARL and PERRELL families in Maryland
The surnames PEARL and PERREL and variations of that name appear in census and other records from several counties surrounding Frederick Co., in Maryland, in Virginia and in West Virginia. These include Jefferson and Berkeley counties in Virginia to 1850 and in West Virginia after that time. It seems likely that those families are related to the Frederick Co., Maryland families.
