TIMMONS Families

Maryland or Virginia to Ohio and Indiana

Google maps may be slow to load - wait for colored pins to show

There are many TIMMONS families in North America. I subscribed to Bunnie TIMMONS TIMMONS Family Newsletter for several years. She stopped sending the newsletter in late 2006 due to lack of material and online competition. Many families trace their ancestry to the Reverand Stephan TIMMONS of southern Ohio. My John TIMMONS family is found in the same area making it appear there must be some relationship yet to be determined. Our TIMMONS name is rarely spelled TIMMON or TIMMINS. TIMMONS appears to be of English or Wales in origin. Genealogy.com has an interesting 2004 post on research on the Irish Timmins/Timmons ancestry.

My great-grandparents Matilda TIMMONS 1866-1949 Delphos, Van Wert County, Ohio to Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana and Thomas Jefferson FOLLIS 1856-1923 Somerset, Wabash County, Indiana to Delphos, Van Wert County, Ohio to Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.

Second great-grandparents were Lewis TIMMONS 1838 Logan County to 1899 Delphos, Van Wert County, Ohio and Amanda KELKER 1839 Franklin County, Pennsylvania to Delphos, Van Wert County, Ohio to 1914 Marion, Grant County, Indiana. The 1870 census shows Lewis as a drayman, living next to a nephew and sons-in-law who were a teamster and boatman, implying they all worked on the Miami-Erie Canal passing through Delphos, Ohio.

Third great-grandparents were Edmund TIMMONS 1790-1866 Virginia to Pickaway-Madison Counties, Ohio to Clark County to Logan County to Delphos, Van Wert County, Ohio and Rachel FIRMAN 1794-1874 Clark County, Kentucky to Clark County, Ohio to Logan County to Delphos, Van Wert County, Ohio.

Fourth great-grandfather was John TIMMONS 1757-1834 Maryland or Virginia to Pickaway-Madison Counties, Ohio and unknown wife.

1784 John Timmons land warrant 3448

There is a John TIMMONS three year sergeant in the Revolutionary War from Frederick County, Virginia. A 2010 book Thomas Timmons of Ireland and Northumberland Virginia His Descendants From About 1650 to Present by David Elsworth Mason indicates on pages 19-20 this Revolutionary War John TIMMONS Warrant #3448 was for 200 acres of land on Muddy River, Logan County, Kentucky. His TIMMONS families moved from Virginia to the Carolina's, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. Of particular interest are the TIMMONS who moved to Kentucky and Grant County, Indiana, page 9 and many other pages. Some of my TIMMONS relatives were also in Marion, Grant County, Indiana in the early 1900's where these TIMMONS lived. Since the book references DNA tests, on page 14 and 20, I need to find a male TIMMONS cousin from my line to have a yDNA test to see if our lines are related. Page 14 says yDNA tests show Thomas TIMMONS, from Ireland to Virigina, is a brother to William TIMMONS of Maryland, perhaps my John TIMMONS line? Any male TIMMONS volunteers reading this?

Nehemiah TIMMONS, 1784-1866, of the William TIMMONS of Maryland line is buried in the Wilson Chapel Cemetery just down the road from my Ohio TIMMONS and FOREMAN families land, so this is likely the correct family.

There is a Timonium, Baltimore County, Maryland which raises the question of the origin of this location. Wikipedia says Timonium is a latinization of Civil War General Timothy Wesley Kromer's first name after his battalion destroyed the cavalry under the command of Franklin Calvin Porter at Actium north of Baltimore. It was a battle for the ages, and upon that spot a great city was named in his honor.
