Arrival in Salem, Massachusetts

The ship "Lyon" left the Bristol, Thames, Gravesend, England April 5, 1629 along with five other ships, George Bonaventure, Four Sisters, Lyon's Whelp, the Mayflower and the Talbot, arriving in Salem late May or June 1629.

My eleventh great-grandfather Richard WEBB found on the WEBB Family Genealogy web site links our family with our 36th President Lyndon Baines Johnson and famous British writer William Shakespeare. They arrived less than 9 years after the Pilgrims arrival in December 1620. Was bound for Cambridge with his wife Elizabeth in 1630 as part of the Winthrop Fleet when 700 colonists arrived.

John THURSTON arrived at Boston, Massachusetts on the ship Mary Anne of Yarmouth, England June 20, 1637. It sailed from Ipswich, England in May 1637 with William Goose as ships master. John THURSTON was from Wrentham, England, 30 years old with his 32 year old wife Margaret, sons Thomas and John, and a 23 year old spinster Lucy Poyett.

The family arrived on the ship Hope Galley September 23, 1734 at the port of Philadelphia from Rotterdam, now the Netherlands as Zacharias Ohlbach, 36, Anna Dumat, 37, Johannes Wilhelm, 11, Johannes Gerard, 6, Anna Margret, 8, Gertrud Margreta, 2, Johannes Peter, 2, and Zacharias' brother Johan Wilhelm ALBAUGH age 28 and wife Anna Elizabetha age 26. They were formerly of Flammersfeld, 21 km west of Hachenburg, Germany.

My sixth great-grandparents Henry KELKER (Heinrich KÖLLIKER) 1705-1762 Zurich, Switzerland to Lancaster now Lebanon County, Pennsylvania and Regula BRÄETSCHER Andelfingen, Switzerland to Lancaster now Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Tradition says they spent 28 weeks at sea in 1743. Possibly four of their children died at sea during the long journey. Is he Johan Heinrich Koller on page 152 of the Names Book who arrived on the ship Glasgow, Walter Sterling, Master, from Rotterdam, qualified September 9, 1738.

My sixth great-grandfather Phillip Karl Angel age 20 (Charles ENGELL) about 1723 Palantine to before 1811 Carroll County, Maryland and Juliana between 1727-1737 to between 1783-1786 of Carroll County, Maryland.

The ZIEGLER Bible places Philip's arrival as 1746. It is thought the fourteen year old Philip was on the ship "Ann Galley" September 27, 1746 with an older Philip ZIEGLER his wife Barbara four children, and a Jacob ZIEGLER

My fifth and sixth great-grandparents were Johann Peter HECKMAN about 1710-1712 to 1767-1774 Germany to Berks County, Pennsylvania and Anna Elizabeth Margareth Rothenberg, Germany to Berks County, Pennsylvania. They arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on board the ship Judith September 15, 1748.

Immigrated on Ship "Patience and Margaret" October 25, 1748 by way of Leith in Scotland.

My sixth great-grandparents Wendell ESSIG about 1700-1799 Switzerland to Washington County, Maryland and Anna MATTE about 1700-1772 of Washington County, Maryland. Served with Frederick the Great in 1740. All their children and the parents, except Simon may have killed by Indians in Maryland. Arrived in Philadelphia on Ship Edinburgh, Captain James Russell, Palatinates from Rotterdam September 15, 1749.

He served in the Revolutionary War in Delaware with his son John Henry HINSEY jr. from Ancestry.com.

"Zeeland" May 16, 1881 from Antwerp, Belgium

My great-grandparents John SCHNEIDER 1843-1917 Alsace Loraine, Germany to Stark County, Ohio to Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana and Margaret LONGENFELDT 1849-1925 Germany to Stark County, Ohio to Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania May 16, 1881 on the ship Zeeland from Antwerp, Belgium. The "Zeeland" of 1888 was the ex-Cunard vessel "Java" built in 1865 by Thompson's of Glasgow. She was bought by the Red Star Line in 1878 and later renamed "Zeeland". Her dimensions were 2866 tons, length 337ft, beam 42.9ft, speed 12 knots. She had a clipper stem, one funnel and three masts. There was accommodation for 160 1st class and 800 3rd class passengers. She sailed throughout her career with Red Star from Antwerp to either NY or Philadelphia. In 1889 she was sold to the French and was renamed "Electrique" and in 1892 was converted to a British sailing ship and renamed "Lord Spencer". She went missing while on passage from San Francisco to Queenstown in 1895. This vessel is described in the Cunard archives as the "Java" [Posted to the Emigration-Ships Mailing List byTed Finch - 19 June 1997]
