Missouri Families

The Show Me State the 24th state of the United States August 10, 1821

Several PROUGH families and descendants currently live in the Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma area. PROUGH reunions have been held for many years. When some of them visited Indiana decades ago when my grandmother Lillie PROUGH ZEIGLER was still living she related the story that Peter PROUGH had to be carried into a wagon to force him to move west from LaGrange County, Indiana to Missouri. Several researchers have found bits and pieces about the trip but nothing definitive.

My second great-grandparents Peter PROUGH 1808-about 1894 Fairfield County, Ohio to LaGrange County, Indiana to Missouri and Barbara Thurston 1821-about 1905 Wayne County, New York to LaGrange County, Indiana to Oklahoma. Their son Ezra PROUGH had children born in Missouri by 1875. Barbara is thought to have died in 1905 in Oklahoma but cannot be found in the 1900 census with any of their children. Peter is thought to have died in 1894 on the way to Missouri and was buried along the railroad tracks which they were following. They were last documented in 1893 LaGrange County, Indiana.

At least two families in my ZUMBRUN family were married or had a child in 1885 Missouri. Jacob Zumbrun LONG married Frances HART in 1885 Missouri. Jacob was a German Brethren ZUMBRUN descendant and Frances' mother was Sarah PROUGH daughter of Barbara THURSTON and Peter PROUGH who were German Lutheran's. It would be interesting to know how these families ended up in Missouri, then both families moved back to Indiana?
