Thomas was born in Fulton County, Indiana where his parents had moved to a farm, but returned to New York State to reside upon the death of his father, when 12 years old, living for a number of years in Georgetown, Madison County, New York.
Thomas has a record of 13 years service with the Endicott Johnson company and its predecessor the Lester Shoe Co, by whom he was first employed when he came to Johnson City. Following his employment with the shoe manufacturers, he operated a farm near Union Center, New York, for 9 years and subsequently returned to Johnson City where he conducted a cigar store on Avenue D for about 6 years. Since 1923 he has been employed by the superintendents of highways in the town of Union.
