Baptist preacher and organizer. After a fifteen years' pastorate at Norwich, he became secretary of the Baptist Union in 1898 and gradually won for himself a leading position in the religious world. He made the Baptist Union a highly influential organization, and was mainly responsible for for founding the Baptist World Alliance (1905) and the Federal Council of the Free Churches (1919) , and securing the appointment of the Baptist and Congregational chaplains in the Army. His book, The Churches at the Cross Roads (1918) is a moving and powerful plea for the reunion of Christendom.
