Notes: of the then 46
States 18 have no Shakespeares listed.
The greatest concentration of the name is to be found in Pennsylvania, where a large proportion of the Shakespeares listed give their birthplace as England, presumably because this State had a major port of entry to the USA - relatively few outside this State give England as their birthplace. The majority, if not all, of the Shakespeares listed in the States of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia have their race recorded as 'Black.' A total of 313 Shakespeares are listed in the 1880 USA Census. The 'number of households' listed above is not quite a true reflection of the number of families, as a number of individuals are living in isolation as servants to other families, farm labourers etc. |
