Curiously, these two Northamptonshire census entries both have an Edmund as the senior member of the family, an unusual name which provides a clue to a possible link. The other Edmund's family are listed separately.

Origins of this family?

A vital clue may be that a John Yates, of Syresham (a place where descendants of the 'other' Northampton Shakespeares were later to be found) married an Elizabeth Shakespeare, 'of Adstone', at Canons Ashby 21st May 1823. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Shakespeare and Sarah Hunt, of Whitfield. This couple is of the right age to be Edmund Yates Shakespeare's parents (he was born about 1831/2) - which raises the interesting speculation that John Yates took his wife's surname for some reason. Proving this may be difficult, but an examination of earlier census entries and burial records, if they can be found, may provide vital clues. It may of course be that there was another Shakespeare/ Yates marriage, quite possibly related - intermarriages between families were quite common.
