The Descendants of

Joseph Shakespeare & Harriett Maybury

Much of what is currently known of this line comes from their descendants in the USA. Their search was for a Jane Eliza Shakespeare born about 1862. Subsequent information reveals that Jane appears in the 1881 Census:

Walter Nock wrote:

My notes of discussions with George Nock ( my Uncle, the son of Jane Eliza Shakespeare Nock ) in the 1950s state Jane's parents were Eliza Cartright and Henry Shakespeare and that Eliza Cartwright's mother's maiden name as Jennie Price. These notes list Jane's siblings; Lot, Alfred (glassmaker) Mary and Harriet. The notes further indicate Harriet married a man named Dovey and Mary married Charles Hand (Manager of Glassworks - presumably, Brierley Hill)

As previously discussed, my mother also had received the same information from her mother-in-law "Jane" about the Cartwright and Price names.

The IGI has Jane Eliza's baptism:

Three of her siblings also appear:

Henry & Eliza appear in the 1861 Census, the year before Jane Eliza's birth. Another brother, Job - then aged 2 - is recorded, but was not remembered by members of the family (see notes above):

Henry appears to have died by the time of the 1881 Census:

Henry was baptised at Brierley Hill, 12 Nov 1826, son of Joseph Shakespeare & Harriett. Joseph Shakespeare & Harriett Meabry (Maybury) married 25 Dec 1825, at St Thomas, Dudley. Joseph and Harriett had a total of nine children, five baptised at Brierlely Hill, and four at Tipton. Presumably Joseph moved for reasons of employment, but the last two of his children were born in Brierley Hill, so by 1839 he had returned to the town of his birth, after having children recorded at Tipton between 1831 and 1836.
