The Shakespeares of
Wootton Wawen
This family begins with John Shakespeare who was baptised 22 Sept 1786 at Chaplaincy of Wootton Wawen-Rc - indicating that the family were Catholics. The parents names are given as N. & N. Shakespeare on the IGI - possibly an abbreviation for a latin term: examination of the original register may reveal other children of this couple and also, possibly, their names.
John is to be found in the 1851 census:

It will be noted that John's age is at variance with his baptism record.
John married Martha Pettyford 18 May 1807 at Wootton Wawen - this was the Anglican Parish Church: the marriage possibly had to take place within the Church of England to be legal, or Martha may simply have not been a Catholic.
Some of John and Martha's children, all baptised at Wootton Wawen Roman Catholic Chapel, are recorded on the IGI:
Maria, born 26 Oct 1807, bapt 27 Oct 1807
Charles, born 14 Dec 1810, bapt 15 Dec 1810
George, born 10 Oct 1812, bapt 12 Oct 1812
The 1851 census entry reveals that there were other children. One of these, Eliza, had married Edward Such 28th January 1850, at St Mary, Warwick - her husband was not at home on the night of the census, but the couple already had a daughter, Ann M. who was seven months old.
Notes
|
John & Martha appear in the 1851 Census Some of their children in the 1851 Census: Their grandson, James Andrew Shakespeare, appears in the 1881 Census, as does their granddaughter, Louisa Shakespeare |
