The Will of

Mary Shakespeare,of St Clement Danes, Middlesex, Died 1654

In the Name of God Amen. I Mary Shakespeare of the parish of St Clements Deanes in the Countie of Middlesex widdowe doe make this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme following. First I bequeath my soule unto Almighty God my Creatour in an assured love of the remission of all my sinnes by the only meritts of Jesus Christ my Saviour and Redeemer and my bodie to the Earth to be buried in a decent manner att the discretion of my Executor hereafter named and wheresoe there is due and oweing unto me from Master Thomas Smithesbye upon severall bondes the summe of six hundred pounds of lawfull money my will and mind is to dispose thereof as followeth. Imprimis my will and is that twenty douzen of bread shall be given to the poore on the day of my funerall by my executor hereafter nominated. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Ellin the now wife of John Milburne three score pounds to be paide out of the money oweing to me by the said Master Thomas Smithesbye. Item I give and bequeath unto my three grandchildren John Milburne, Mary Milburne and Martha Milburne sonne and daughters of the said John Milburne and Ellenor his wife [-] to the said John Milburne the younger fifty poundes and to the said Mary Milburne two hundred poundes. And to the said Martha Milburne one hundred pounds to be paid out of the monies that the said Master Thomas Smythesbye oweth unto me all which Legacies shall be paide out of the monie of them all the vis. ages of one and twentie years or Day  of marriage and in the [-] to be imployed [----] and [--] and if one or more of them shall die before such dayes and times of payment hereaforsaid then the portion or portions of him or her or them dying [to] remaine and to be paide [grattis] to the survivors or [---] of them and in the case all of them die within the said times them the same to remaine to my said Executor. Item I give into my Grandsonne John Shakespeare alias {blank} fiftie poundes to be paid same of the saide Master Thomas Smithesbye his debts  due unto me as aforesaid when he shall [-] the age of one and twentie years and give a discharge thereof under his hand and seale in person and if he shall happen to die before the said age of one and twentie yeares I give unto my said Grandsonne John Milburne the younger. Item I give grante and desire to Mistress Anne Brown an Annuitie of fower poundes by the yeare to be paid unto her Quarterly during her natural life out of the interest of the monie due unto me. First I give unto my daughter in Law Margarett Shakespeare five shillings and unto Sarah Richardson my brothers daughter two shillings and six pence. Item I give unto Mary Shakespeare now the wife of Thomas [Aston] fortie shillings and unto Martha Joans widow forty shillings. And to my late servant Henry Walters Twentie shillings to be paide unto them and evrie of them within six monthes after my Decease thereof as followeth. First I give unto my said Daughter Ellen the wife of John Milburne before named all my best childbed Linnen and woollen to furnish her Chamber with and carpetts curtaines and cushones and my best Feather bedd two downe pillowes and payre of the best blanketts and my Tapestrie coverlett and also I give unto her my Diamond Ring. Item I give unto my said Grandchild Mary Milburne my several best feather [-] bolster and one downe Pillowe my lined curtaines and [-] to [-] one Irish worsted carpett and two cushones of the same worke. One douzen of Table Napkins wrought with white and a Towell thereunto. One cloth cupboard Cloth with a Border about it and a green [-] chiffonerr on Tablecloth six payre of sheetes with three pillow boards one dozen of diaper table napkins and one diaper tablecloth. Also I give unto her one silver beare boule one silver salte one silver wine boule and one silver porringer and my Wedding Ring. Item I give unto my said Granchild Martha Milburne the best Featherbedd in the upper chamber one boulster and one downe pillowe a payre of Blanketts and my best greene Rugge a payre of [-] curtains and vallence one douzen of Flaxen Table Napkins and one Table Cloth three paire of sheets with three pillow boards. Also I give unto her one silver beare Boulw and two silver spoons. Item I give unto Mistress Ellen Langley my dammask petticoate and my blew [-] petticoate and my gold ring with the redd stone to be delivered unto her within one monthe after my decease. Item I give unto my cousin Lancellott [Parrish] fortie shillings. Item I give to Mistress Mary Skelton twentie shillings to bye her a Ring. All the rest of my moneyes goods debts chattells and household stuffe not given nor bequeathed as aforesaid (escepting twentie shillings a piece to my Overseers hereafter named I do give and leave unto my well beloved sonne in Lawe John Milburne whom I doe make sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament revoaking all former Wills. Also lastly I doe make Master William Cheinon and Master Francis Chooke of [-] in the Parish of St Clements Deanes aforesaid the Overseers of this my last Will and Testament and I doe give unto each of them twentie shillings to bye them two rings. In Witness That this is the last Will and Testament of me the said Mary Shakespeare Widdow I have hereunto sett my hand and seale The Tweny fourthe daye of December in the yeare of our Lord God One thousand six hundred fifty and three. Mary Shakespeare her mark. Signed sealed and published in the presence of James Skelton William Chanon Henry Walker.

The Will was preved att London The second day of March in the yeare of our Lord God According to the Accompte and Computation of the Church of England One thousand six hundred fiftie and fower before the Judges for probate of Wills and granting Administrations lawfully authorised by the oath of John Milburne the sole Executor named in the above written Will To whome Administration of all and singular the goods chattells and debts of the said deceased was commited he being first legally sworne truly and faythfully to administer the same.
