John Gregory II

John Gregory II was the first John Gregory born in America.  He was born somewhere in New England about 1638. On the death of his father, the John Gregory family homestead came to John Gregory II, who apparently lived there until his death. John Gregory lived most of his life in Norwalk and became a major landowner there.  In 1709, his holdings were values at £353, making his the largest individual landowner in Norwalk at the time.

The children of John Gregory II are:

  1. Elizabeth

  2. Sarah

  3. Jonathan

  4. Abigail

  5. Mary

  6. Joseph

  7. John III

  8. John Gregory III

In 1725, John Gregory III sold his lands to John Smith and moved to a 62-acre farm in Cranberry Plain or Plains (now officially known as Cranbury).  He is said to have owned everything in sight in Cranbury, according to Grant Gregory in Ancestors and Descendants of Henry Gregory.

The children of John Gregory III are:

  1. John IV

  2. Nehemiah

  3. Sarah, who married John Betts

  4. Denton

This is the beginning of the Gregory family in the Cranbury section of Norwalk.  The Gregory we find in 1860 Cranbury are descendants of two children of John Gregory III: Nehemiah and Denton.
