He served 3 years and 9 months of which was the war with Indians . On or about the 16th day of July 1865 I am not sure if his mother and Taylor were ma ried before he enlisted in the Union Army or while he was in the service. His sisters: Rebecca married Edward B.Carroll, Sarah married Bob Rountree, Alice married Bob Chandler. On September 12, 1866 Charles Henry Taylor was born, a half brother to the Gray children. I remember papa saying never turn a hungry person away, give them some food of what you have, For at one time before the Army he was not working he made his home at Uncle Johnny Carroll. He and the Carroll boy were close friends. I remember him telling that one time they had only fat bacon and brown sugar to eat. For a year or more he and Lash Carrell were with a Circus and papa played his banjo and sang songs like, Yellow Rose of Texas, I left Alabama with a banjo on my knee and several more. There is a picture of a little man standing by and there is also a tin type picture of papa and Uncle Frank Carroll taken in Nebraska City where they had gone to have some machinery repaired. The had a trapeze act in the circus. When Ralph Carroll was here from his home in Canada he came to visit me. He reminded me of the long years of friendship between our families. Later papa went to work in the machine shop in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, where he met Frank Badgley a cabinet maker and they became friends.

Listed on 1860 Basham Gap Morgan County, Alabama census at what appears to be 9 years of age, but is probably 7, as ages of Thomas Jefferson and James M. are different on 1900 Conway County Arkansas census.

Margaret Merrick of Jacksonville, Arkansas, states that her grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Rhodes, told her that he and James had come from Alabama in 1880 by ox-drawn wagons, a trip that took one year to make.

1900 Nichols Township Conway County Arkansas census ED 10 Sheet 12 Line 68 lists a James M. Rhodes (45), born September 1857, farming on rented farm as head of household, born in Georgia, father and mother born in North Carolina married to Colorado (Stover?) (46) born April 1856 in Alabama, married 18 years, father and mother born in Alabama, mother of 9, 5 living, Jerry White (20) born May 1880 in Arkansas, black, hired hand. The fact that no children are in the residence seems unusual as Colorado ("Rade") reportedly had none.

This entry created some confusion, as birth place and parentage paralleled that of the James M. Rhodes who is the brother of Thomas Jefferson Rhodes. On the same census page line 61 is a "Woodie" Rhodes (27) head of household born August 1872 in Alabama, farming rented farm, born in Alabama, father born in Georgia, mother in Alabama, wife Kissie A. (28) born October 1871 in Arkansas, with children Lorida (6), Authur C. (2) and Clide R. (8/12). At first this was thought to be a son of James M. and his first wife, Delphia McDaniel. Marriage bond signed by C. W. Rhodes and L. D. Stover, provided by Mary Brents of Morrilton, Arkansas for C. W. Rhodes and Kissie A. Bennett of Lick Mountain, Conway County, Arkansas was obtained with this thought in mind. However, this may be just a coincidence, although an astonishing one. There is a Colorado Stover in the 1860 Lawrence County, Alabama census, further muddying the waters. James M. and Rhoda (Rade or Radie) were not found on the 1900 Conway County census, although they could have been overlooked.

(Further research reveals that Colorado and "Rade" or Rhoda Stover are one and the same)

There is a Colorado Rhoades (Rhodes) buried adjacent to J. M. (James M.) and Rade (Rhoda) Rhodes at Sunnyside Cemetery in Conway County, Arkansas with the notation written on a small marker that reads: Mrs. Colorado Rhoades died February 1925 age 72 yr. 9 mo., 20 days (Harris ? Funeral Home, Morrilton, Arkansas. (Date of death: Actually 17 February 1935 - writing on tag blurred)

Listed on 1910 Nichols Township Conway County Arkansas census ED 10 Sheet 5B enumerated 22 and 23 April 1910 by Robert B. McCrackin as Jim M. Rhodes Head of Household (58) Married twice, to present wife 30 years, born in Georgia, father and mother in North Carolina, farming on own account on rented farm, Radie (Rhoda) wife (50) born in Alabama, father and mother born in Alabama, married once and mother of no children.

James (Uncle Jim) and his wife Rade (Rhoda) are buried in unmarked graves in Sunnyside Cemetery in Conway County, Arkansas. In an adjacent grave is Colorado Stover Rhoades (Rhodes).

Further research revealed Colorado Stover to be the daughter of Lorenza Dow and Amanda (Mandy) Stover Sr. and born in Lawrence County, Alabama. She appears on the 1860 census of that county at age 2, in 1870 at 12, and 1880 at 22. No record of a marriage to James M. Rhodes was found in Lawrence County. Colorado's brother was Lorenza Dow Stover Jr. and it is believed that he and his family came to Arkansas with Thomas Jefferson and James M. Rhodes in 1880. (Although Margaret Merrick of Jacksonville, Arkansas stated that the Rhodes and Stover families came to Arkansas in 1880, a marriage record of L. D. Stover's second marriage to Cordelia Cornelius on 21 October 1883 in Lawrence County, Alabama, presents some doubt as to the dates.)

L. D. Stover, living in Solgohachia, Arkansas in May 2000 is his grandson and states that the death date on the marker of Colorado's grave is in error, that she died later than 1925, probably around 1935. He remembers her and that she moved in with her brother after the death of her husband.

1900 Nichols Township Conway County, Arkansas census ED 10 Sheet 12 Line 68 lists James M. Rhodes (45) born September 1857 in Georgia, farming on rented farm as head of household, father and mother born in North Carolina, Colorado (46) born April 1856 in Alabama, father and mother born in Alabama, married 18 years, mother of 9, 5 living, Jerry White (20) born May 1880 in Arkansas, black, hired hand.

Welbourne Township, Conway County, Morrilton, Arkansas census ED 19 Sheet 5 Line 76, taken 28 January 1920 by Ada E. Seabright, enumerator, lists James Rhodes (63), born in Georgia, father born in North Carolina and mother born in Georgia as head of household and Colorado (66), wife, born in Alabama.

OBITUARY

Edward B Carrell

Edward B Carrell died suddenly in Bickleton, Monday, June 17th, of heart failure, aged 72 years. Mr. Carrell was taken ill a few weeks ago, caused probably by over-exertions, and apparently was slowly recovering his strength. Mr. Edmond Gleason procured this and went to call the Doctor. Before his return, Mr. Carrell quietly passed away in the chair. The body was taken to his home. The funeral took place at 11:00 O'clock Wednesday, the Rev C.W. Johnson conducting the services in the Methodist Church. General Notes: Clyde Albert Conley (verbal)
His mother died when he was 18 years old.

Clyde Conley said at age 4 or 5 he mentioned there were raisins in the gravy (flys) he was sent outside.

Clyde Albert Conley went to Selah Washington in 1934 where he worked in the West Dependable Grocery store and after that in the Hardware store. During WW II, he managed a grocery store for Robert Lince (Jim's Market) while Robert Lince was in the war. Clyde later owned a grocery of his own, Clyde's Market, in Selah Washington, which Robert Lince purchased from Clyde several years later.

Clyde was Selah City Clerk for a number of years and served on the Selah City Council from 1953 to 1972. Clyde also served on the Selah Chamber of Commerce and was president of that organization in the late 1930's. Clyde started the Chamber's Crab Feed in 1936 and it is still (1996) an annual event. Clyde served on the Fire District Board as secretary for several years and served on the Yakima Valley Fire District Board.

Clyde was Treasurer of his church, Selah Church of Christ. Clyde was also active in the Selah Lions Club and held almost every office in the organization, including president thru out the years.

Clyde and wife Alta Fravel Conley and baby daughter, Shirley, lived with Lora and Erwin Knowles on their ranch near Benton City, Washington in 1933. He worked for board & room, living in the 1 room cabin that Phillip Bachler had lived in years earlier, and at the same time rode a horse to Whitstrand, Washington and worked on the Deshayne Ranch for 50 cents a day.

CONLEY RETIRES FROM FIRE DISTRICT #2

It is very frequently the people behind the scenes, those that just keep things moving , are the silent majority that really gets things done, quietly and with persistence. Clyde Conley is one of those people. Clyde Conley retired from the position of Secretary of Fire District #2, Dec. 31, 1990, but his actual retirement date was February of 1989. On the date of his retirement in February of 1989, he was asked to stay on for the sake of continuity, so he did. Upon his retirement, he had spent 34 years as the secretary of Fire District #2. While doing this public Job, Conley was also serving as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. During his tenure, Conley had to prepare minutes of each meeting and see to it that copies of the minutes went to each of the three fire commissioners, a job that entailed a large amount of detail and bookkeeping. Conley also had to keep fire commissioners informed of previous matters that would have an influence on the decisions that they were making. He was responsible for having the paperwork and accounting ready for auditors and he also had to be aware of annexations and annexation policies and how they would affect the workings of the fire district Fire Chief, John Soden, recalls that Conley never missed a meeting. "He was always attentive, and kept good minutes," Soden said. "He showed a definite concern and interest for the people of Fire District #2." Throughout Conley's time as the secretary, fire district grew . It was incorporated with the City of Selah on Sept 26, 1966, and later incorporations included East Selah, Lower Wenas and Upper Wenas. Each time a new area of responsibility was added , Conley's responsibilities grew. Conley had to be aware of the various types of roads and whether access of specific types of fire fighting vehicles would be possible. All problems had to be anticipated. When Conley started as the secretary, the three fire commissioners were Axel Samuelson, Ed Brown and William Dowdy. Clyde Conley is now (1991) 85 years old, and can, at last, turn the wheel over to someone else. Carl North, firefighter and high-school teacher, is the new secretary of Fire District #2. Conley lives in retirement in Selah. (Source : Yakima Herald, 1991)

GETS BEAR STORY OUT OF DEER HUNT

Clyde Conley shot a nice two-point buck far up in the Wenas on Sunday and he almost got a bear in what he terms the hard way, The bear, probably frightened by hunters, came tearing down the ridge on which Clyde was walking. There was not much room to pass so Clyde let out a husky yell and the bear swerved to the side. About that time Larry Tyrrell got in a good shot and bruin rolled to the bottom of the small canyon and two more shots failed to stop him. Clyde sheepishly reported that Bobby Dubuque, who was in the party, also ran. (Selah news paper, sometime in the 1940's)
