George was born on 29 Jun 1755 in Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia, died on 19 May 1823 at age 67, and was buried in May 1823 in St Pauls Cemetery, Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia.

George Fravel, son of Henry and Anna Keller Fravel, born east of Woodstock, Va., 29 June 1755; died May 19, 1823; married Elizabeth Bushong, of York, Pa. To George was devised by his father's will, a part of the original plantation and tract of land containing 152 acres adjoining the village of Woodstock on the east. For the most part he was engaged in agriculture but in the days of stage driving he kept a tavern on the main street of Woodstock in the old building below Schmitt's drug store. The country in that vicinity was nearly all in native forest with here and there a new settler cabin. The howl of the wolf and the scream of the panther became less frequent as the tinkle of the cow bell was heard in the land. There was plenty of game in the woods and fish in the streams. "For the fish we used the hook and line. We pounded corn to make it fine. On johnny-cake our folk would dine. At our log cabin home, in the wild woods of Virginia. And when good meat we wished to eat, we killed the stag by the hillside craig or shot the bounding doe. Near our log cabin home , in the wild woods of Virginia."

There was an abundance of wild grapes, plums, berries and nuts of various kinds in the w oods and the wild bees and sugar maples furnished plenty of honey, sugar and syrup. The table drink was crust or roasted rye coffee, sage or sassafras tea, and on special occasions "store tea" and sometimes blackberry wine was served, the latter being a fine drink for log rollings and cabin raisings. George Fravel and Elizabeth Bushong had 10 children, she was from York, Pa.

Tombstone reads: George Fravel, departed this life on the 19th day of May 1823 at the age of 67 years, 10 months, 20 days.

George Fravel was a farmer and also had a tavern on main street of Woodstock, that stood in front of the present post office. He left by will 152 acres of the origanal plantation of his fathers.

To the County Court of Shenandoah County In Chancery Sitting I Humbly complaining sheweth, your orators and oratrix, George Fravel, George Rye and Catharine Rye his wife, Frederick Fravel, David Fravel , John Fravel, and Moses Walton Guardian for Joseph Fravel infant. All heirs and distributees and Catharine Fravel, widow and relict of Henry Fravel deceased. That said Henry Fravel died on the {12} day of {June} 1851, leaving a considerable amount of personal estate to go into the hands of George Rye of Shenandoah County, Administrator by appointment of the County Court of the same.
That the indebtedness of said Henry Fravel was very small, if any at all, and that in any event, the assets in the hands of said administrator will more than liquidate the same.
Your orators and oratrix further shew that said Henry Fravel died seized and possessed of considerable real estate situate near the town of Woodstock in Shenandoah County, which may be enumerated as follows, To Wit: A tract of land lying on the Shenandoah River being part of the old George Fravel land containing about 7 1/2 acres lying on the road leading to the farm of Jacob Hockman now deceased and bounded by the lands of Isaac and Samuel Hottel. Also an interest in several lots, part of which is owned by Jacob Burner and part of the same enclosed by him and originally summarized in the Dower interest of the widow of said George Fravel. Also a tract of cleared land containing about 18 1/2 acres, likewise comprised in said given interest and adjoining the lands of Jacob Miller, Henry Bushong, William Ott and Samuel Hottel. Also an interest in a tract of mountain land lying East of the Shenandoah River on the west side of the Massanutten mountain containing 88 1/2 acres more or less. Also an interest in two lots lying in the west side of the Valley Turnpike and one of the same tract on the South East side of said road, part being woodland and containing in all about 31 1/2 acres. Also a lot containing about 4 1/2 acres adjoining the lands of Benjamin and Abraham Hoover and Henry St. George Albert. Also an interest in another lot adjoining said last mentioned lot of which are numbered respectively 141 and 142, among the out lots of said town of Woodstock. Also a house and lot in said town number 176 in the plat of the same. Also another lot immediately adjoining said last mentioned numbered 175 in said plat. All of which your complainant wish to have divided among them. After the assignment of Dower first to be made to the widow of said Henry Fravel in the same: To the end therefore that this object may be accomplished and justice thereby done. This prayer of this bill is that James G. Fravel and Mary Fravel his wife and Joseph Fravel by his guardian ad litem by this Court to be appointed the only remaining heirs and distributees of the Estate of Henry Fravel be made parties Defendant to the same and charges with the Commonwealth subpoenaed to answer the same: That Commissioners be appointed to assign the said Catharine Fravel widow as aforesaid be Dower in the said enumerated lands and said divide the residue among the other distributees of said Henry Fravel deceased in such manner as may best comply with justice and equity and that such other and personal relief be granted in the premises as to this Court may seem proper. And your Complainants will ever pray etc.

Fravel deceased, and William Gregory Commissioner, under the ......decree of the county Court of Berkley for James, William, Jane, John, and George Fravel, infant, Heirs of the said John B. Fravel of the first part and Alice M. Fravel widow, and devisee of George Fravel of Shenandoah county of the other part. WITNESSES that the said Mary Ann Fravel, widow as aforesaid and the said William Gregory Commissioner as aforesaid, for and in consideration of the sum of four hundred dollars current money, unto them in hand paid by the said Alice M. Fravel, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged. Have granted, bargained, sell, alien and confirm unto the said Alice M. Fravel devisee as aforesaid, her heirs and assigns, the following tract or parcel of land, that is to say, all the right, title, and interest whether a reversion or otherwise which the said John B. In 1835 Isaac Fravel and his first wife bade farewell to the land of their kindred and after spending many weeks in the journey, over mountains, through dense forests, and across deep treacherous streams, arrived at last in Harrison Co, Indiana and began life in a humble home two miles from Central, near Corydon, where Mr Fravel, in addition to farming, ran a blacksmith shop during the years of his active life. He and his wives were buried in a private cemetery on the Rhodes' homestead. (Source: History of the Descendants of John Hottel, pg 847)

Mrs. Frances Fravel died on last Sabbath evening, at the home of Mr.
Philip
J. Fravel, her only child, and our fellow townsman.
When the silver cord of her life was loosed, another of the few threads
leading back into the distant past of our town and community was severed.
She was born 21 April 1807, in Woodstock, in the house now owned by Mr.
David Gillock. She had nearly completed 81 years of pilgrimage.
In 1828 she was married to Mr. David Fravel. In 1830 he died, leaving
her with this only child, Philip, then an infant not a year old. These
fifty eight years of widowhood have been passed among us, witnessing the
generations come and go before her.
Her maiden name was Frances Miller. She was the last in life of a
family of thirteen children, born to Philip and Elizabeth Miller. She
remembered the departure of her father in officer's uniform for the British War of
1812, and had heard her mother's mother, Mrs. Fanny Grove, tell of
Revolutionary times. Mrs. Grove came from Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Fravel's mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Miller, was one of the original
members organized into the Woodstock Presbyterian Church in 1824, or The
Union Church of Shenandoah, as it was then called. She herself united with
this church on 28 March 1829, living in its communion nearly 59 years. An
extract from the minute of the Church Session Book for 28 March 1829 is as
follows: "The following persons, after conversation with reflectively on
their experimental acquaintance with religion, were duly admitted as members of
the Church in full communion, viz: Joseph Fetzer, Philip Fetzer, Alfred Tobin,
Frances Fravel, Mary L. Johnston, Sydney Ott, Elizabeth Donaldson, Barbara
A. Effinger, Mary Fravel and Jane Morris (a person of color)" of these 10
persons Mrs. Mary (Polly) Fravel only survives.
The latter years of Mrs. Fravel's life were spent in blindness from
cataracts. This was also the case with her mother Mrs. Elizabeth Miller,
who died at the more advanced age of 82. This fact led to the selection of the
same passage of scripture for consideration at the burial of each, "And
there shall be no night there," from the 22nd chapter and 5th verse of the Book
of Revelation.

General Notes: Emigrated to Laporte, Indiana in 1835
He identified himself with the M. E. Church upon his arrival in LaPorte, Indiana and his house for many years was like a home to Methodist preachers who always found a latch string out, a cordial welcome land the best of entertainment. He carried on a grocery business at LaPorte for some years, after which he connected with different firms in the capacity of a salesman and bookkeeper, took an active interest in the prosperity of the town, occupied positions of trust and responsibility, first as treasurer of the town, then school commissioner, and in 1842 was elected to the office of Justice of the Peace, which he held for four years. He was appointed notary public in 1853, which commission was renewed from time to time while he was able to attend to business. He was an anti-slavery Democrat, always voting with that party until the passage of the Lecompton Bill, in 1854. From that time he was a Republican. He performed his duties faithfully and efficiently, and left an untarnished record.

FIRE IN WOODSTOCK A fire last Wednesday morning, starting in the lumber shed of Joseph Fravel, of Woodstock, situated in the rear of his furniture factory, practically destroyed the upper part of the building and several thousand feet of moulding and lumber. A large amount of lumber stored in the lower part of the shed and factory and the barn were saved by hard and quick work on the part of the two volunteer fire departments. The loss amounted to about seven hundred dollars with no insurance. Several hours afterwards a fire broke out in the barn caused by the smouldering ambers from the morning fire, but did little damage. ------------

MR. JOSEPH FRAVEL DEAD

Mr. Joseph Fravel, a life long resident of Woodstock, died at his home on the corner of Church and Court street last Saturday morning, aged 67 years. he had been engaged in business in this place for a number of years. he had been suffering from a complication of diseases for some months, but with few exceptions was able to be about nearly every day. he had been in his shop on the day before his death. He had gotten up on Saturday morning about one o'clock, fell on the floor and immediately expired. He had been a member of the Reformed Church since his boyhood. He is survived by four sons: Messr. Walter, Omer, Joseph, and David Fravel and four daughters, Misses Hattie, Rose, Elizabeth and Nellie Fravel. Funeral services were held at his late home by his pastor Rev. J. S. Hartman, assisted by Rev. N. H. Skyles, after which his body was buried in the Reformed Cemetery.

Joseph married Catherine Victoria Hottel, daughter of John J Hottel and Unknown, on 28 Feb 1871 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. DEATH OF MRS. JOSEPH FRAVEL

One of the saddest deaths that has ever occurred in this community was that of Mrs. Joseph Fravel who quietly passed to her eternal rest on Wednesday morning about 4 o'clock after many months of suffering from consumption. This estimable lady was a daughter of the late John J. Hottel, a well known citizen who resided on the river near this place, and was born 1st January 1847. She was truly a good woman, and a large circle of friends will sadly deplore her untimely death. But is in the immediate home circle that this affliction will be felt with the keenest sorrow and where her bereaved husband and eleven children will long mourn the loss of a devoted wife and faithful loving mother. Mrs. Fravel was for many years a most worthy member of the Reformed Church, and throughout her sickness she was richly comforted by her unshaken faith in the promises of her religion. The funeral took place at 4 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, and was conducted by her pastor, Rev. A. K. Kline.

32. John Bunyan Fravel Jr was born on 18 Jan 1814 in Chester South Carolina and died on 1 Mar 1876 in Laporte, Indiana at age 62.

General Notes: John Bunyan Fravel Jr. in 1826, as young as he was John Bunyan Fravel pushed out into the world for himself and learning the trade of Copper and tinsmith in his native state he journeyed to Maryland, living in that state for a short time. He then went to Woodstock, Virginia, and assisted Abraham Fravel in a store. In April 1835, he accompanied Abraham Fravel's family to Laporte, Indiana, and there married his oldest daughter, Sophia E. With the exception of one year in South Bend, Indiana, he spent the remainder of his life in LaPorte, Indiana. His educational advantages were limited, but his aptitude, energy and industry were such that he was a well educated man, noted for his general intelligence and ease and correctness of expression both with tongue and pen. He was a public spirited citizen and bore an active part in all enterprises of interest to the people. Though born and reared in a slave state, he was an anti-slavery man and became a Republican in Politics on the organization of the party. he was one of the leading merchants of LaPorte, a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity and in 1840 held the office of school commissioner of the county, the duties of which office he discharged with ability and success. While at the breakfast table one morning he was stricken with paralysis which terminated his life in a few hours.

Mrs. Fravel, relict of the late Jos. Fravel, succumbed to the infirmities of age and passed peacefully away at the residence of her daughter Mrs. F.M. Thompson, Sunday. Mrs. Fravel was born in Harrison County eight-five years ago. Interred in Emerson Cemetery. She was the mother of ten children, only four of whom are living; namely, Mrs. Nettleton, Mrs. Jack Spore, Mrs. Rhesa Spore and Mrs. F. M. Thompson. OBITUARY

P. J. FRAVEL

P. J. Fravel, the oldest merchant of this place and one who had been well
and favorably known in business circles for nearly a half century, died
unselectively at his home, on last Saturday morning at 4 o'clock.
On Wednesday night he locked the rear door of his store room and was
standing outside looking for a peculiarly bright start, of which he had
been reading, when he was suddenly attacked by vertigo, and fell down a flight
of about four steps. His chief injury seemed to be about the hip which the
surgeons pronounced to be slightly fractured. He suffered on Wednesday
night complaining of the pain in his hip. On Friday and Friday night he seemed
to be doing as well as could be expected, but early on Saturday morning his
spirit passed away.
He was a man of fine business qualifications. He enjoyed the confidence
of the community in which he lived. He had been a consistent and faithful member of the Presbyterian Church for many years.
He leaves a family consisting of his wife, four sons and two daughters.
Two of his sons and one daughter are married. In their deep tribulation
they have deep sympathy of the entire community. His body, after the
funeral
service at the house, was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery.

DEATH OF MR. P. J. FRAVEL

Suddenly, about 3 AM Saturday, 11 February 1899, at his home in
Woodstock, Virginia, our beloved and honored friend and brother passed to
his Father's house above. We can hardly realize yet, that he is indeed gone,
so suddenly, so unexpected was the shock. Mr. Fravel had fallen a few nights
before, and hurt his hip, but seemed to be doing well, and his friends
hoped to see him up in ten days or so. But in an instant, the messenger came, as he
lay quietly in bed, "Heartfailure" took him off.
His funeral was from the house, on account of the furious, almost
unprecedented wintry storm, then raging. It was 10:30 AM Monday 13
February 1899. Friends filled the room where his body lay, and many more who could
not get there, by reason of the violence of the elements, mourned his loss at
their homes. All of his children were present, except his daughter Mrs.
Emma Sager and her husband, detained by the sickness of their child.
An honored Ruling Elder of the Presbyterian Church for thirty-nine
years, the Clerk of the Session, faithful and efficient, a modest high
toned Christian gentleman, an upright reliable, Businessman, a courteous,
intelligent, genial, social companion, and affectionate husband, and
father, all this was Mr. Fravel. He was sixty-nine years old last January and spent his
life in Woodstock the place of his birth.
He will be missed, sorely missed, by his family, by his church, by the
whole community. But we must think of him, and not of ourselves. For his
end was peace and his eternity will be glorious.

DEATH OF MRS. EMMA FRAVEL

Mrs. Emma Fravel, widow of the late P. J. Fravel, died at her home on
Main Street Thursday morning at 3:30 o'clock from Bright's disease after
a lingering illness of some months, aged 77 years.
Funeral services conducted by her pastor, Dr. P. D. Stephenson will be
held in the Presbyterian Church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
Mrs. Fravel was a daughter of the late John Koontz and was born in
Woodstock. She was a woman of unusual bright disposition and a consistent
member of the Presbyterian Church for a number of years. She is survived
by six children: Dr. Ed H. Fravel of Poca, West Virginia; H. R. Fravel of
Baltimore; Philip G. Fravel of Philadelphia; Mrs. R. E. Sager of
Pittsburg, and H. J. and Miss Nan of this place, and one sister Mrs. Maggie Timberlake of
Staunton. All of her children with the exception of Mr. P. G. Fravel who
returned to Philadelphia Tuesday, were with her when the end came.

74. Robert Fravel was born about 1821 in Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia and died in 1848 about age 27.

General Notes: Robert Fravel was a captain in the Mexican War. A short time after returning from Mexico, he died from diseases contracted while in the service, and was laid to rest in Patten Cemetery. His Niece, Mrs. Mary Fravel Biddle, related an interesting story of an old flag. In 1846, a state of war was declared between the United States and Mexico. A company was formed in LaPorte, under command of Captain W.W. McCoy, and my uncle Robert Fravel was commissioned first Lieutenant. Before the company left for Mexico several ladies met at my father's (John Bunyan Fravel) home and made a flag. My aunt, Miss Miranda Fravel, presented it to the Company with the promise that it should be returned if there remained a man to bring it back at the close of the war. When they were in the Rio Grande, Lieut. Fravel was left in care of Samuel Mecum on an island to die. That day the Company moved on about four miles mostly through a marsh and camped for the night. When peace was declared in 1848, what was left of the brave gallant company returned to LaPorte bringing back with them the old flag discolored and bullet torn, but with no stains of dishonor upon it. To the strains of martial music Captain Fravel unrolled it and in a befitting speech presented it to the ladies who made it. This took place in grandfather Abraham Fravel's house then on East Main Street. Since my father furnished the material for the flag it was given to him. It remained in our family until 1904, when my aunt, Mrs Arelin (Miranda Fravel) of Washington D.C., who was visiting us, at the time, took the flag with her on her return home, and placed it in the National Museum.

75. Dr. Theophilus Fravel was born on 8 Apr 1824 in Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia, died on 7 Jan 1900 in Westville, Indiana at age 75, and was buried in Pine Lake Cemetery, Laporte, Indiana.

General Notes: Theophilus Fravel came to LaPorte, Indiana with his parents in 1835. He was educated in the Indiana Medical Institute of the place, and at Rush Medical College of Chicago. He first practiced medicine at McHenry, Illinois, coming to Westville, in 1856, where he spent the remainder of his life. He and his wife were identified with what was best in Westville. Though modest and unassuming, the doctor possessed strong convictions of right, and was not lacking in courage. At on time single handed he attempted to quell a street riot brought on by the liquor interests who tried to drive a temperance speaker from the town. Dr. Fravel received some injures, but his antagonists suffered more in public opinion. In bad and pleasant weather for forty-four years Dr. Fravel steadily pursued a large practice, easing the pains and aches in almost every household. He was pillar of strength in the M.E. Church, holding a place on the official board for may years and was twenty-four years superintendent of the Sunday School, which position he held at the time of his death. When Mr and Mrs Fravel grew old the crossed the river of death together. One in life, so were they also in death. They both had been subject to organic heart trouble. They sought milder climates and brief respites from ill health spending one winter in California. The dark shadow fell on them Sunday evening at nine o’clock, Jan 7, 1900 On that evening Dr. Fravel was lying on the couch talking to Mrs Fravel. Their conversation was cheerful in tone and each spoke of feeling unusually well. They counted on many more days of usefulness together, but without warning the summons came. The doctor after a few gasps became unconscious. Being alone, Mrs Fravel ran to the neighbors for assistance, returning to his side just as his pulse faintly quivered for the last time. Sorrowfully kneeling by the side of his couch she placed her hand on her husband’s face and in a dazed manner exclaimed “Oh love, why did you leave me, why did you leave me’” land immediately expired in the arms of her friends. The caskets, exactly alike, were handsome product of the cabinet makers art. They were covered with heavy broadcloth and rich silver bars
extended the entire length of the sides. On top were plates containing the names of the deceased with other data. At a few minutes past eleven the pallbearers, honorary and active, took their placed beside the caskets and proceeded to the church. They were buried in Pine Lake Cemetery, Laporte, Indiana. Having no children he gave his home to the city of Westville, for a library.

OBITUARY

MRS. MARY M. FRAVEL

Mrs. Maggie Fravel, wife of Mr. John W. Fravel, died at her residence, on Church street, on last Friday morning, 26th ult. in the 59th year of her age.

Mrs. Fravel was a Miss Baker, of Hardy county, W. Va.

In early life, she connected herself with the Methodist church and almost to the very day of her death was an active worker in the cause of her Master. She took great delight in the services of the sanctuary and occupied her place there, even when suffering from disease which would have been a sufficient reason for her to have remained at home. She was a lady of more than ordinary intelligence. The characteristics of her life were fervent piety and active interest in everything which tended to the advancement of Christ's kingdom. Of her it may be well said: 'She did what she could."

She was conscious to the last moment of life and touchingly spoke to her husband and children even while her eyes were fast closing in death.

She left to mourn the servere loss of a loving wife and affectionate mother, her husband and five children, Messrs. F. R. Fravel, of Washington, D.C., Geo. Fravel of Conneaut Lake, Pa., Frederick Fravel, of Boston, Mass. and Warden and Robert Fravel, of this place.

In this sad and sudden affliction, the family have the sympathy of a large number of friends.

Her funeral was preached on last Sunday afternoon, in the Methodist church, by her pastor, Rev. J. C. Jones, assisted by Rev. P. D. Stephenson, D.D., and Rev. A.A. J. Bushong.

Shenandoah Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, of which she was an active member, attended the funeral in a body. As a token of their high appreciation, they placed above the remains, a beautiful floral Confederate flag, consisting of red and white carnations, and a broken staff of bride's roses, the whole bordered by blooming smilax.

Her body was interred in Massanutten cemetery.

DEATH OF MRS. KATE HAMMAN
Mrs. Kate Hamman, wife of Mr. George C. Hamman of this place died last
Monday morning, aged 66 years and 16 days.
She is survived by her husband and two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Smith and
Miss Allie Hamman, and one sister Mrs. William Storm, of Baltimore.
She had been afflicted with fatty degeneration of the heart for some
time and frequently suffered from acute indigestion.
She had been a member of the Presbyterian Church, for a number of years.
Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon at her late
resident, by her Pastor, Dr. P. D. Stephenson and her body buried in
Massanutten Cemetery.

Catherine married George C Hamman on 27 Jun 1869 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. George was born about 1839, died on 11 Sep 1920 in Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia about age 81, and was buried in Massanuten Cemetery, Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia.

General Notes: Lifelong Citizen of Woodstock and Confederate Officer and Soldier Heeds Command-- The high sweet notes of taps, those lingering farewell strains which are the final rites in the death of a soldier, have sounded, the muffled drum has beat the soldier's last tattoo, and George C. Hammond, a former soldier and officer of the Confederate Army, and an honored and well known citizen of Woodstock has stood his last formation in the ranks of the living and has passed on to join the serried columns which line the unknown shore. Mr. Hammond died at his home in Woodstock Saturday evening at the hour of 9:30 o'clock at the age of eighty-two years as a result of the infirmities of old age and Bright's disease. He had been complaining for about three weeks prior to his death, although he had been confined to his bed but for the spare of three days. The deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Smith of Marion, Ohio, and Miss Allie Hammond of this place; two grandsons, Joe Hammon Smith of Galion, Ohio and Ray Smith of Marion, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. General William Hammond of Houston, Texas. Mr. Hammond was a native of Woodstock, having been born here eighty-two years ago and having spent his entire life here with the exception of the time spent in the service of the Confederacy. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hammond and previous to the Civil war, was employed in Woodstock. At the age of eighteen, he was a deputy sheriff of Shenandoah County and he has been connected with the various offices of town and county in the capacity of clerk practically his entire life, for years being a familiar figure in the County Clerk's and Treasurer's office. His war record was one of unusual interest. He held the rank of lieutenant in Company F, 10th Virginia Infantry, and throughout the entire war. He was severely wounded in the battle of Gettysburg in the first part of July 1863, and was captured and held a prisoner by the Federal forces being given to see the inside of Federal prisons at Camp Chase, near Columbus, Ohio, and at Camp Delaware. Upon his discharge from the Army, he returned to Woodstock and has resided here since that time. Funeral services were held at the home on Monday evening at five o'clock, being conducted by Rev. J. A. McMurray, and following the services, the body was conveyed to Massanutten Cemetery and laid to rest. In the death of George C. Hamman, the community loses one who was a good citizen, a Christian man, a soldier, an officer and a gentleman, and one who took his life as he found it and lived it to the best that he knew how. No man can hope to do more.

C.S.A. Company F, 10th Virginia Infantry, enlisted about May 3rd of 1863. He was wounded in the battle of Chancellorsville after taking the enemies guns. He was shot through the right ankle, which resulted in the amputation his lower right leg. John applied for soldier pension; he was entitled to $30 annually. Obituary:

Mrs. Alice Fravel Spore, 84, wife of the late A.J. Spore, well known and life-long resident of Gibson country, died at 6:30 o'clock Saturday morning Jan. 18, at her home in Owensville, where she had resided 29 years.
Mrs. Spore was born Jan 6 1857, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann Fravel and was a member of the C.P. Church since a young woman. She had been in failing health for a number of years, but had been bedfast less than three weeks.
Surviving are six children, Millard, at home, Mrs John Moser, Mrs John Bingham of near Princeton, Mrs L. G. Armstrong and J, Horace Spore of near Owensville, and Mrs G. C. Woods of Eldorado, Ill. Three grandchildren and one great grandson survive her. One son Orville, proceeded her in death in 1913.
Funeral services were held at the C.P. Church in Owensville at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev G.W. Morrison. Burial in the white Church cemetery, west of Princeton.
Mrs Spore was wholly devoted to her home and domestic duties, Through all the years of her life she has worked for her children in her gentle, tender and loving manner. (Owensville Indiana Newspaper, Jan 1941)

Obituary:

Andrew Jackson Spore, known to many as "Uncle Jack" quietly passed on from this life at home in Owensville, Ind, Sunday Sept. 25, 1934, having attained the age of 80 years. He was faithful and loving member of the Owensville Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, who was his companion for over fifty -seven years, and four daughters and two sons, who are: Mrs John Moser, Mrs John Bingham of Princeton, Ind; Mrs Lemuel Armstrong of Owensville, Ind; Mrs G. C. Woods of Eldorado, Ill; Mr Millard Spore and Mr Horace Spore, both of Owensville, Ind.
In addition to these, three grandchildren and host of friends and other relatives mourn his passing.
The writer conducted the service at the home, using a very appropriate text as a basis for the sermon, "Let me die the death of the righteous and let my Last end be like his", as Brother Spore was certainly another saint of God, who has been called to the reward awaiting all such faithful's" - Charles E. DEATH OF MRS. SPORE

Mrs. Rhesa Spore died at her home Saturday at 7 P.M. after a long illness, at the age of 60 years. She was one of Owensville's good women and will be greatly missed. She is survived by husband and daughter, Mrs. Edgar Lucas, and three sister, Mrs. Susan Thompson, Mrs. J.C. Nettleton and Mrs. A.J. Spore.
The funeral was held Monday at 2 o'clock at the Cumberland Presbyterian church, of which she was a member, Rev. Powers, the pastor, conducting the service. Interment was made in Bethel cemetery. (Newspaper and date unknown)

Lucinda married Rhesa Knowles Spore on 26 Feb 1885 in Gibson County, Indiana. Rhesa was born in 1861 and died in 1947 at age 86.

"Edward H. Fravel, M. D., an eminent physician and scholar of Poca, Putnam
County, West Virginia is a son of Philip James and Emma Ellen (Koontz)
Fravel. he was born 30 March 1855, at Woodstock, Va. His parents are also
Virginians, and the father, Philip James Fravel, who is one of the celebrated
poets of the day, is the son of David Fravel, of Swiss descent, and has been
a merchant of Woodstock for many years. They raised eight children, five
sons and two daughters still survive. Edward is the oldest of these. He was
reared in Shenandoah County, and attended the common schools and the Academy
of Woodstock, until he reached his seventeenth year, when he entered a
military academy and remained there for two months, after which he returned
home and taught various different schools for several years. After teaching
for some time, he took a course at the Hampton and Sydney College, and in
1872, reading medicine with Dr. G. W. Magruder, of Woodstock, now living in
Fort Worth, Texas. After remaking with him for five years, Dr. Fravel
entered the Jefferson Medical College in 1877, and two years later was graduated.
In 1878, he had the honor to be elected a physician on the disease of the
eye at the Jefferson Medical College hospital in Philadelphia, and did not
begin the practice of his profession as a regular physician until 1880, when
he located at Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and remained there for two
years, in partnership with Dr. Barbee. At the expiration of this time he
removed to Poca, and has since built up a large and lucrative practice
amounting to several thousand dollars annually. He is president of the Ohio Valley
Medical Society of West Virginia and is an honored lecturer each year in
the medical society of West Virginia, having already delivered them on the
following important subjects: In 1880, The Ophthalmoscope; 1884, Diphtheria;
1885, "A Case of Cerebral embolus; 1886, a Chromatopsia; 1887, Glaucoma;
1888, Anomalies of Refraction; 1888 Fifty Cases of Keratitis; 1889, A Case of
Amaloid Degeneration of the Cornea and in 1890, a valuable paper on Five
Cases of Pneumonitis. Dr Fravel married Miss Bettie Stewart, 2 May 1882, and
they have three children: Mary, Stewart and Philip. Dr. Fravel is an
honored member of the Kanawha Medical and Surgical Society, and is a staunch
Democrat."

CHARLES W. FRAVEL

On last Friday afternoon, Charles W. Fravel, son of P. J. Fravel, one
of our oldest and best known merchants, died at the age of nearly 41 years.
Charles Fravel was a young man of bright mind. He was exceedingly quick
in business. For a number of years, he was teller of the Shenandoah county
Bank, and was afterwards engaged in the office of an Insurance Company in
Washington.
He was very popular among a host of friends. He may have had enemies,
but if so, we never heard of it.
He was accomodating, kind and generous, a favorite in the community
almost an idol in the family where his uniform kindness had won the most
tender affection of his relatives. He could not be otherwise than respected and
loved by a large circle of friends. The tidings of his death brought sadness
to many hearths.
After a touching funeral sermon last Saturday afternoon by his pastor
Dr. P. D. Stephenson of the Presbyterian Church, his remains were followed
by a large concourse of friends to his resting place in the Lutheran
cemetery. We all mourn his death, for he was one of us.

MILLARD SPORE
Millard Spore, 75, passed away at his home in Princeton, about 3:45 o'clock Tuesday morning, following a five day illness.
Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. John Moser and Mrs. Grover Woods of Eldorado, Ill.; Mrs. John Bingham of Princeton and Mrs. Lemuel Armstrong of Owensville; one brother, Horace Spore of Owensville and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Spore was born four miles northeast of Owensville on February 2, 1878, where he lived for most of his lifetime, having retired from farming and moving to Princeton some three years ago. He was widely known throughout the county for his ability to remember historical
events and important dates. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jack Spore of Owensville.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the White Church near Princeton with the Rev. J. R. Wooten of Owensville, officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.

OWENSVILLE -- Mrs. Minnie E. Moser, widow of the late John Moser who passed away in 1951, died at the Gibson General hospital in Princeton Thursday morning.
Mrs. Moser was born near Owensville on Aug. 17, 1879 and was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian church in Owensville.
Survivors include a brother, Horace Spore of Owensville; two sisters, Mrs. Ada Bingham of Princeton, and Mrs. Elsie Smith of Owensville; a niece, Mrs. Gladys Cunningham of Ft. Branch; two nephews, Robert Spore of Evansville, and Gerald Spore of Bloomington.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Holder Funeral Home and burial will be in White church cemetery. Rev. J. L. Mitchell will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home today.

Mrs. John C. (Ada) Bingham of 331 W. Walnut St., Princeton, died Thursday evening at Gibson General Hospital after an illness of several weeks.
She was born near Owensville Sept. 7, 1881, and had her birthday recently at the hospital.
She had resided in Princeton most of her married life, where Mr. Bingham, in his later years served 4 terms as Gibson County Treasurer. He passed
away in 1960. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was President of the Missionary Society
and spent much time in later years in various Missionary projects and supported two Korean boys.
Mrs. Bingham was a daughter of the late A. J. (Uncle Jack) Spore, as he was known, and Alice Fravel Spore of Owensville.
One daughter, Genevievee, died in infancy in 1921. Survivors are a sister Elsie O. Smith, a niece Gladys Cunningham of Fort Branch, nephews's
Robert Spore, Evansville and Gerald Spore, Bloomington, and several great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Kendall Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Jack. B. Haskins officiating. Burial was in White Church Cemetery.

Funeral services for J. Horace Spore, 84, who died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday in Wabash Nursing Home, Mt. Carmel, Ill., were conducted at 2 p.m.
Monday at Holder Funeral Home in Owensville. Services were conducted by Rev. R. Gene Sloat and burial was in Owensville Cemetery.
He was born in Gibson county, near Owensville, June 9, 1883, and lived in the community his entire life. He was a retired farmer and a member of
the Calvary Baptist Church of Owensvillle.
Surviving are two sons, Robert of Evansville, and Gerald L. of Bloomington; a daughter, Mrs. James Cunningham of Ft. Branch; two sisters, Mrs.
Ada Bingham, Princeton and Mrs. Earl Smith of Owensville; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lelah Spore, 50, died at her home north of Owensville, Sunday evening, after a lingering illness, having been seriously ill the past two months. Her death will be a big loss to her family, host of friends and the community. Mrs. Spore was vitally interested in the training of youth and the uplifting of the standards of the younger generation. She is survived by the husband, J. Horace Spore, two sons, Robert, a teacher at Fulton Ind. and Gerald, at home. Also, a daughter Mrs. James Cunningham and grandson Larry Cunningham of Owensville; two sisters, Mrs. Carl Ponzer, Elizabethtown, NC, Mrs. Jas. McGregor, Washington, D. Mrs. Nettie L. Armstrong, 72, died at her home here at 4:55 p.m. Monday (June 29 1959) following an illness of several months.
Born near Owensville on May 7, 1887, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Spore. She had lived in the community her entire
lifetime. She was the wife of Lemuel Armstrong, a retired farmer. About six months ago, they had purchased a home in town, retiring from the farm.
She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Princeton.
Surviving beside the husband is a brother, Horace Spore, three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Moser and Mrs. Earl Smith of Owensville and Mrs. Ada Bingham
of Princeton; a niece Mrs. James Cunningham of Fort Branch and two nephews, Robert Spore of Evansville and Gerald Spore of Bloomington.
Services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Holder Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Robert Williams officiating. Burial was in the Bethel
Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Melvin and Arthur Couch, William and Jack Dyball, David and James R. Armstrong.

DEATH FROM TYPHOID
Orville Spore died at his home about four miles northeast of this place Tuesday evening about six o'clock from typhoid fever. The remains were
interred in the Bethel cemetery Thursday afternoon, Rev. Abel of the M. E. church conducting the services.
Orville was the son of Andrew J. Spore, and was born on the farm where he died, Aug. 8, 1889. November 15, 1911, he was married to Elva,
daughter of Jas. H. Armstrong. There were no children. Last Easter day, he became a member of the Methodist church at this place. The deceased
was an honorable, industrious young man. Cut down in the full strength of his early manhood, his death is a loss to the community as well as his
family, that is deeply deplored.

She was born Aug. 13, 1894, north of Owensville. Her parents were Andrew J. and Alice A. (Fravel) Spore.
She was a graduate of Owensville High School in the class of 1913. She lived several years at Eldorado, Ill, where she was a member of the Calvary
Baptist Church. After her return to Owensville, following the death of her first husband in 1952, she was a member of the Owensville General Baptist
Church, Philathea Class, Bethel Community Club, Cynthiana Chapter O.E.S. #445, and the Gibson County Home Economics Chorus.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Grover C. Woods; her second husband, Earl R. Smith; three brothers, Millard, Horace, and Orville
Spore; three sisters, Minnie E. Moser, Ada A. Bingham and Nettie L. Armstrong.
Survivors are a niece, Gladys Cunningham, Fort Branch and a nephew, Gerald L. Spore, Bloomington.
Services were at 3 p.m. Sunday at Holder Funeral Home in Owensville. Burial was in the Columbia White Church Cemetery near Princeton. Rev.
Bob Douglas officiated.
Visitation was from noon until the service time Sunday.

ROBERT SPORE
Robert M. Spore, Evansville, died at the age of 66, on Wednesday morning, Aug. 2, in Welborn Hospital.
A native of Owensville, he was born there in 1912, and was an Owensville resident until entering college. Spore was the director of the vocational rehabilitation department at the Evansville State Hospital, of which he was named in 1968 and was in charge of on-the-job training and outside placement. He had taught business and retailing at Reitz High School from 1946 to 1951.
Spore served for 26 years in the Naval Reserve, retiring in 1976 as lieutenant commander. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the VFW Post No. 114 and the Funkhouser Post of the American Legion. He also was a member of the Armed Forces Council. He belonged to the West Side Civitan Club, the West Side Nut Club and the Retired Officers' Association.
Survivors are his wife, Margaret; one daughter; one son; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Cunningham, Fort Branch; one brother, Gerald Spore of Bloomington, and one grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Friday in Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, with Chaplain William Gore from the United States Naval Reserves officiating. Burial was in Owensville Cemetery where U.S. Naval Reserve conducted military rites.

At one time he was the Military governor of the Sulu Archipelago, later in the lumber business. He died in WWII and Jocelyn and her 3 sisters and brother with her mother were interned for over 3 years in Manila by the Japanese. William Edward Fravel was in the troops that liberated them and this where William Edward Fravel met Jocelyn. Most of her records were lost during WWII.
