Don was born November 15, 1931 in Erick, Oklahoma to Oscar and Ruby Powers. He moved to Yakima, Washington at the age of 11. He started the first of one of his proudest accomplishments in 1950 when he joined the Air Force. His patriotism and pride in having served his country was central to his character throughout his life. He married Elizabeth Montgomery in 1951 and together they had five children.

In 1956, he began a carpenter apprenticeship, another major accomplishment in his life. He became a master of his trade over the years, working on construction projects throughout the Northwest and in California, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Colorado. His carpentry talents extended from heavy construction to the fine details of making furniture and even toys. In his retirement, he delighted his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with handmade pieces that will go on to be cherished heirlooms.

In addition to his woodworking hobby, he and his brother Mac were very interested in the genealogy of the family. The information they uncovered is a legacy left to those of us who remain. We are so grateful that he invested time in uncovering the past and showing us the people and situations that shaped us.

In 1975, he married Sherry Bennett, thereby adding two more children to those who called him Dad. At the time of his passing, in addition to his seven children, he was blessed to have 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Eugene, Mac and Duane and sisters Lola, Diane and Marie. He is survived by Sherry, his wife of 36 years, his brother John Powers, his children and their spouses: Peggy Wheeler, Donnie (Faith) Powers, Jeannie (Greg) Steele, Becky (Steve) Griffin, Mike (Karol) Powers, Scott (Angie) Ellis, and Tammy (Philip) Vago.

A private service will be held for the family. Memories can be shared at the Hillcrest Memorial Center website.
