General Notes: Annie Storch Mattausch date of death unknown, however she did die before her husband Joseph. His Will states no wife survives.

OBITUARY

JOSEPH MATTAUSCH, SR.

As briefly mentioned in our issue of last week. Jos. Mattausch Sr., for many years a resident of this county and well and popularly known among a large number of friends and associates, passed away at his home in the town of Alma on Wednesday, June 16, at 11:30 a.m., death being caused by acute stomach trouble and the infirmities of old age. Deceased was 81 years and 10 months of age when death overtook him. Joseph Mattausch Sr., was born in Algersdorf, Austria, on August 15, 1838, where he spent the early years of his life. At the age of fourteen he entered the employ of a blacksmith as an apprentice and served in that capacity for three years, becoming an expert and efficient blacksmith and machinist, a trade which he followed for many years. Deceased came to this country with his parents in 1855, the family settling in Mormon Coolie, La Crosse County. He came to Buffalo County about two years later and took up his residence in the town of Lincoln. Soon thereafter he found employment at his trade in Minneiska, Minn., and a few years later in Fountain City, where he was married to Miss Mary Herdeg, who with three sons and one daughter, Edward of Gilmanton, Joseph Jr . at home, William of Wabasha, and Mrs. John Voss of Gilmanton, are left to mourn his loss. Six children preceded him in death. Mr. Mattausch and family moved from Fountain City to the town of Alma in 1894, where they have since resided and where the deceased has ever been known as a prominent and upright citizen. He was always a great lover of music and was a member of the first brass band organized at Fountain City many years ago. Besides being a popular and well-liked citizen and neighbor deceased was a kind and dutiful husband and father and his passing is deeply mourned by relatives and friends. His was an honest nature and he was ever firm and outspoken in his convictions. He leaves, besides his wife and children, six brothers and five sisters; Frank, Stephen, Edward, William, Gustave, Reinhold, Mrs C. Kuehn, Mrs. F. Dowiasch, Mrs. Geo. Plett, Mrs. John Plett and Miss Emilie. He also leaves four teen grandchildren. The funeral was held Friday from the home, Rev. Bursack officiating , and interment was made in the cemetery at Gilmanton. Many friends and neighbors attended the last sad rites and paid tribute to the memory of this venerable citizen who has passed to his reward. (Source: Buffalo Co. He would take sick once a year and was taken to the Wabasha Hospital where he received cards and visits, this took place yearly about every February.

He took care of his sisters Mary and Emilie and his brother Reinhold.

William F. Mattausch took his brother Edward to Mondovi last Friday from which place the latter went to Eau Claire to stay with their mother, who is seriously ill at the Sacred Heart Hospital.

William was almost blind. He and his children had red hair.

OBITUARY
William Mattausch

Another pioneer has answered the call to migrate to a new unknown land, leaving behind him the fruits of a long and useful life.
Wilhelm Mattausch was born in Algersdort, Austria, January 14, 1844, and came to this country with his parents in 1856. They resided near La Crosse for two years, then came to Buffalo County.
His marriage to Gertrude Tillman took place April 23, 1878, and they thereafter made their home in the town of Lincoln.
Could the complete story be told of Mr. Mattausch's personal activities and his relation toward the community in which he lived it would reveal a tale of patience, hardship, toil, and self denial, mingled with a saving appreciation for such simple social advantages as were available in the rural district, and in which he often took a leading part.
It was as a lad only 12 years old the he came across the broad Atlantic with his parents , the voyage being made in a sailing vessel and they were seven weeks on the water. The family located first at Tmadison, from which place they journeyed to La Crosse by ox team.
In the year 1874 Mr. Mattausch homesteaded some land in the town of Lincoln near Praag, which he cleared and made his home, and of which he retained possession until his death last week. In those early days wild game was abundant, and Mr. Mattausch was fond of the chase. It is told that he was reputed to be more than ordinarily successful as a hunter, and that besides other game he brought home in all about a hundred deer and two bears.
As the country around became more settled and developed, he came to be one of the more active and best known residents. For eight years he held the office of director of the district school board, and for twenty years he served as school treasurer. He was also elected a member of the town board of supervisors and held that position three years.
He became well known in quite a large section of the country in the days when threshing rigs were few, the territory of each rig was large and the season long. He and his brother Stephan owned a large outfit for many years and threshed in an area that took in much of the towns of Lincoln, Waumandee, and Gilmanton, and even went into the town of Dover and near Nelson.
Coming from a family with a natural inclination for music, he learned to play the bass violin very well, and with his sons Henry and Joseph formed an orchestra that provided merry entertainment at many a country dance and entertainment. He also enjoyed singing and belonged to a local singing society.
Mr. Mattausch was a well informed man, as was fond of good reading, and was an active member of a German reading circle, called the "Lincoln Leseverein Frohsin"
When the Praag Cheese Co, was organized many years ago he was one of the principal promoters of the enterprise and acted as treasurer for many years.
Always active and conscientious in his duties while he was able, he was patient and uncomplaining when physical disability became his lot in his declining years.
About six years ago he became blind, and after an illness of several days he passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 5. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.C. Perterhansel of the Reformed Church and the remains were laid to rest in the Lincoln Cemetery Friday with songs by the church choir.
Six nephews of the deceased acted as pallbearers, namely: Joe Plett, George Plett, Adolf Plett, Alvin Plett, Joe Mattausch Jr., and Frank Dowiasch.
Deceased leaves surviving his sorrowing wife and the following five children: Henry, Joseph, Nic, and Mrs Ed Miller, all of the town of Lincoln, and Mrs. Frank Schmidt of the town of Alma. One daughter Julia, died in infancy. He also leaves two brothers and two sisters: Reinhold, Mrs. Mary Dowiasch, and Emelia of the town of Lincoln, and Gustav of Spokane, Wash. , also three grandchildren, Lester and Delores Mattausch and Oliver Miller.

William married Gertrude Tillman, daughter of Henry Tillman and Lena, on 23 Apr 1878 in Lincoln, Buffalo County, Wisconsin. Gertrude was born in 1859 in Austria, died in 1958 at age 99, and was buried in Cream, Buffalo County, Wisconsin.

Mrs. Gertrude Mattausch

Thought to be Buffalo County's oldest resident, Mrs. Gertrude Mattausch 98, died Wednesday evening of last week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Augusta Miller at Praag.
The funeral service was held here Saturday afternoon at the Stohr chapel with Rev. Gene Krueger officiating. Interment was in the town of Lincoln.
Mrs Mattausch was born in Germany in 1859 and came to the United States when she was a year old.
She was married April 23, 1878, to William Mattausch who died 26 years ago.
Survivors are: Four Children, Joseph, Mrs. Augusta Miller, Nicholaus and Mrs. Ella Schmidt , all of Alma; a brother, Henry Tillman, Alma; two half-sisters, Mrs. Anna Haigh and Mrs. William (Lena) Balk, Alma; a half-brother Joseph Tillman, Winona; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A son, Henry, died last year and a daughter, Julia, died in infancy. Two sisters preceded her in death.
Pallbearers were William Balk, Rudolph Mueller, Oscar Noah, Joseph Heller, George Plett, Joseph Plett.

Mrs. Geo. Plett Sr. (nee Theresa Mattausch) of Mondovi died at her home on Saturday after a week of illness. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon, the remains being taken from Mondovi to Gilmanton for burial, an obit will be published next week.

Theresa Mattausch was born in Leibritz, Austria, Sept., 3, 1848. She came to this country with her parents at the age of six, in the year 1854. They located at La Crosse, Wis., fo r a number of years when they moved to the town of Lincoln where she was married to George Plett, March 7th, 1876. Mr. and Mrs. Plett took a farm in the town of Gilmanton where they lived until the year 1902. They then moved onto a farm in the town of Albany, Pepin County, where they lived until 1908, when they retired from farming and moved to the city of Mondovi. After a week's illness, Mrs. Plett died at her home here Saturday, April 30. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, services being conducted at the church in Gilmanton by Rev. F.R.Black . There was a large attendance. Interment was made at Gilmanton cemetery. Mrs. Plett is survived by her husband and nine children: Mrs. Anna Auer of this city; Adolf of Mondovi; Josep h of Albany; Mrs Frank Auer of Cochrane; George Jr., of this city; Helena and Edgar of the town of Albany; Mrs. Henry Johnson of Mondovi and Alvin of Albany. One son Oscar, died in infan y. Theresa married George Plett Sr., son of Hans George Plett and Christine Margaret, in 1877. George was born on 27 Feb 1851 in Germany, died on 11 Jun 1936 at age 85, and was buried in Gilmanton, Buffalo County, Wisconsin.

General Notes: George Plett, a well-known and highly respected citizen of Mondovi, Buffalo County, who ha s done good work in developing farms in both Buffalo and Pepin Counties, was born in Germany , Feb. 27, 1850, son of Hans George and Margaret Plett. At the age of 19 years he came to Ame rica, his brother John, aged 19, coming two years later. His emigration was caused by a lette r he had received from an old school friend who had come to this country previously and wh o wrote that he was getting $19 a month for his labor. Landing in New York after a voyage o f 14 days, he and his brother made their way directly to Buffalo County, and on arriving her e went to Mondovi township, where they worked that summer for a Mr. Lauerbach. During the ens uing winter they did chores on the farm for their board. The winter after that George Plett f ound employment in the lumber camps and was thus occupied for several years. In the meanwhil e he had been joined by his parents, who came to this country four years after him. In 1877 G eorge Plett became a land owner buying a tract of 160 acres in section 32, Gilmanton township , of which 100 acres had been broken. There was also a small frame house and shed barns on th e place. Here his mother kept house for him for a time. In 1877 Mr. Plett was married to Mari e Theresa Mattausch, of the Little Waumandee, and they began domestic life on the Gilmanton f arm, the size of which he subsequently increased by the purchase of an additional tract of 8 0 acres adjoining. He also improved the place by the erection of a two-story frame house, co nsisting of upright and wing, a frame barn, granary, corncrib and tool sheds, finally develop ing the farm into one of the best in the county. Residing on it until 1903, he then purchase d 320 acres in Albany township, Pepin County, five miles north of Mondovi, of which about 10 0 acres were broken, and moved to it, renting the Gilmanton farm to his sons. There he reside d until 1908, when he sold the Pepin County farm to his son Joseph and returned to the Gilman ton farm, which he operated for two years with his sons George R. and Adolph. Wanting more la nd, he went to the state of Washington, but finding nothing there to suit him, returned to B uffalo County. In 1908 Mr. Plett sold the Gilmanton township farm to his sons, George R and A dolph, and in 1910 bought 27 acres in Mondovi City within the city limits, to which he move d and where he is now living, the place having a comfortable frame house as well as a barn . Though well to do, Mr. Plett is not content to live in idleness, but works a part of his la nd, renting the rest. His Political principles are those of the Republican party, but he ha s never been active in politics. He and his wife, who is still living, are the parents of nin e children, five sons and four daughters, who are comfortably settled around them in Buffal o and Pepin Counties. OBITUARY

Reinhold Mattausch

Funeral services were held here Sunday from the Stohr Funeral Chapel for Reinhold Mattausch 87 year old native of the Town of Lincoln. The Rev. Harvey Schweepe officiated at the services. Burial was at the Town of Lincoln Cemetery.
He was born in the the Town of Lincoln, Nov 5, 1862, the son of Joseph and Ann Storch Mattausch. In his adult life he farmed for 30 years and then sold his farm to Frank Dowiasch. Later he built a home at Praag, where he lived with his two sisters, Mrs Mary Dowiasch and Miss Emily Mattausch.
Mr. Mattausch was the last of thirteen children in the family.
Death came on January 18, ten days after he fell and broke his hip on January 8. He was hospitalized at St. Elizabeth Hospital at Wabasha from the time of his accident. He leaves to morn him 32 nieces and nephews.

17. Joseph F Mattausch was born on 8 Mar 1837 in Austria, died on 17 Mar 1905 in Buffalo County, Wisconsin at age 68, and was buried in Liberty Cemetery, Cream, Buffalo County, Wisconsin.

General Notes: THE FOLLOWING IS THEORY ONLY AND HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN: Joseph F. Mattausch, born 5 March 1837, died 17 March 1905, is the nephew of Joseph Mattausch that married Annie Storch. We think that Franz Mattausch, father or Joseph F. Mattausch and Joseph Mattausch (that married Annie Storch) are brothers, parents unknown. In probate papers Franciska Mittendorfer, widow, says that Joseph F. Mattausch had one brother, Stefan Mattausch and one sister Anna Girschik born Mattausch, both living and now residing at Schneffendo rf, Bohemia, Austria. Probate of will of Joseph F. Mattausch, filed 2 January 1907, at Alma, Buffalo County, Wisconsin. Married 1871-1878 to Franciska Mittendorfer (Fanny). She remained in Austria and Joseph came to America. Fanny is listed as widow living at No. 59 Wiedener Hauptstrasse, Vienna, Austria. We have a copy of marriage certificate as well as his will. Probate notice of Buffalo County Journal, 4 December 1906. Jacob Bream Jr. Administrator of estate. Taxable costs and disbursements in the case of Joseph F. Mattausch is Edward Mattausch, Estella Mattausch in which judgement was rendered in Circuit Court, Buffalo County, August 30, for $330.00 damages and $23.43 attorney fees. There also remains as assets of said estate a judgement rendered by the Circuit Court of Buffalo County against Edward S. Mattausch and Estell a Mattausch, unpaid docketed August 30, 1904.

Joseph was called "Dutch Joe", he was a carpenter and built furniture and beautiful cabinets , take a drawer out of one of his cabinets and see his name on the back of the drawer. He also built a dish cupboard with drawer for silverware, with a cupboard underneath.

Funeral mass was read at the Holy Rosary Church at Rosalia on Monday, August 14th for Fra nk L. Mattausch, who passed away Aug 9th at the St. Ignatuies Hospital on Aug 9th aged 94.
He was born in Buffalo County, Wis. February 5. 1867 and grew to manhood on the farm of hi s parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Mattausch.
In 1896 he married Arnoldina Ganz and for twenty years they lived on their farm in the tow n of Lincoln, where their three children, Edwin, Louise and Lenora were born.
In 1915 he and his family moved to Rosalia, Washington where his parents, brothers and si sters had moved previously and had bought farms in the rich Palouse wheat country, and he t oo bought a farm there.
After the death of his wife in 1951 he made his home with his daughters Mrs. T.C. Gahr, a nd Mrs. Edwin Fetzner spending a part of each summer on the home farm with his son Edwin unti l a year ago when he had several strokes and needed special care which was given to him at Pa louse Rest Haven in Colfax, Washington, and on Aug 9 he passed away at the St. Ignatuis Hosp ital.
He is survived by his son Edwin, Rosalia, Washington, and two daughters, Mrs. Theron Gah r (Louise) and Mrs. Edwin Fetzner (Lenora) Warren, Oregon; 5 grandchildren, and 10 great-gran dchildren; three brothers, W.T. Mattausch, Clayton, Washington; Julius and George and on sist er Emma, Rosalia, Washington; one sister Mrs John Weinandy (Anna) and one brother, Rudolph, p receded him in death.

Frank married Arnoldina E Ganz on 14 Nov 1896 in Buffalo County, Wisconsin. Arnoldina was born on 17 Feb 1869 in Waumandee, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, died on 9 Jan 1951 in Rosalia, Whitman County, Washington at age 81, and was buried in Rosalia, Whitman County, Washington.

William Mattausch

Services for William Mattausch, 92, an Inland Empire resident since 1908, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Hazen & Jaeger's with the Rev. John F. Groschupf officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood.
Mr. Mattausch died yesterday at a Deer Park hospital.
Born in Cream, Wis., he was a dairyman there before coming west in 1908. He farmed at Rosalia for more than 30 years before retiring and moving to Spokane in 1944. He made his home at Loon Lake in recent years.
Mr. Mattausch and his four brothers at one time comprised a popular dance orchestra here.
He was the first master of Plaza Grange and a member of Modern Woodman of the World.
He is survived by a son, Stephen, Moses Lake; four daughters, Mrs. Edna Steen, Fairfield ; Mrs. Berma Bjorklund and Mrs. Palma Richardson, both of Spokane, and Mrs. Anna Irwin, Rosalia; two grandchildren and a great-grandson; a sister, Emma Mattausch, and two brothers, George and Julius Mattausch, all of Rosalia.
His older brother Frank, another brother Rud of Rosalia, a sister Ann Weinady proceeded his death. Also his wife the former Christina Roffler and a daughter Viva Mcbride proceeded his death.

Obituary

Mrs Simon Triesch died at her home near Benton City last Wednesday of cancer. Funeral services were held from the Catholic church here Friday, requiem high mass being commemorated by the Rev. Father Richards. Interment was made in the Prosser Cemetery.
Mrs Triesch leaves a husband, two daughters and two sons, one of the boys being in France.

Comes now Simon Triesch, administrator of the above estate, of Emelie Triesch, deceased and respectfully represents and shows to the court to--wit:

1. That Emelie Triesch died on or about the 7th day of August 1918, in Benton County, Washington and was at the time of her death a resident of Benton County, Washington.

2. That the decedent left no will devising or disposing of her property.

3. The decedent left as heirs the following persons: Simon Triesch aged 57, Benton City,Washington, Joseph Triesch, son aged 25, Benton City, Washington, Tressa Triesch, daughter, aged 23, Benton City, Washington, Edward J. Triesch, son, aged 22, Benton City, Washington, and Amelia Triesch, daughter age 19, Benton City, Washington.

4. The said deceased left property real and personal to--wit: Community interest in lots 39 and 40, of division one, Kiona-Benton Highlands , according to the recorded plat thereof. Personal property, one team of horses and harness, three head of cows, sixty chickens , half interest in a 1917 model Ford car, one spring wagon, one farm wagon, one mower, one rake, two irrigation district bonds of $100.00, each two Liberty bonds of $50.00 each.

5. That on the 16th day of April 1919, Simon Triesch, administrator herein, petitioned the court for an order directing letters of administration to issue to him in said estate and later on the 22 day of April 1919, said administrator filed an order of this court appointing the said Simon Triesch, administrator of the said estate of Emelia Triesch, deceased, and directed that letters of administration issue to him upon his filing a bond in the sum of $1500.

6 That thereafter on the said 22 of April, 1919 said Simon Triesch filed his bond, duly approved in the said sum of $1500, took the required oath and letter of administration were issued to him, in above said estate.

7. That on the 22nd day of April, 1919, said administrator filed an order of this court appointing A.E.Whan, A.L. Henson, and John Gaustad, appraisers of said estate. That on the said 22nd day of April 1919 said administrator filed and inventory of all the property, both real and personal, said appraisers fixing the value of said real property above described in the sum of $3025.00, and person property above described in the sum of $800.

8. That on the 22 day of April, 1919, said administrator filed an order of this court directing notice to issue to the creditors of said estate. The first publication of said notice was April 24, 1919 and the same was published for three consecutive weeks in the Republican Bulletin, a newspaper of weekly circulation, published in Prosser, Washington, directing all persons having claims, if any, against said estate do serve the same with vouchers on Andrew Brown, attorney for said estate, within six months after date of first publication of this notice, all of which is particularly shown by the records and files in this case, reference to which is hereby made.

9. That more than six months have elapsed since the date of first publication of said notice to creditors, and no claims of any kind or nature whatsoever have been served on the said attorney, or the administrator and filed with the clerk of the above time is now passed for serving and filing such claims.

10. That no money has come into the hands of said administrator since his appointment and no money has been paid out, by him since said appointment, all claims incident to the last sickness and burial of said deceased having been paid by said administrator prior to his application for letters herein, and for which no claim is hereby made.

11. That the expense of administering upon said estate is in the following sum to-wit:

14. That said estate is now in a condition to be closed, all bills and claims, if any presented, having been paid and the time having elapsed when any bills or claims might be filed , due notice to creditors having been given as aforesaid, and all things having been done and performed as required by law. Wherefore, your petitioner prays for an order of this court fixing a time and place of hearing his final account and report herein and approving the same. Also distributing the property of said estate to the heirs entitled thereto, and discharging said administrator and exonerating his bondsman from further liability.

SIMON TRIESCH DIES

Simon Triesch, for the past twelve years a resident of Prosser and vicinity, died Friday , April 12 at the Pruden hospital. Funeral services were held Monday at the Sacred Heart Church in Prosser with Father Jachetti in charge.
Mr. Triesch was born in Germany, December 25th, 1862. He came to America in 1876 settling in the state of Wisconsin where he resided until 1888 when he came to Washington.
He was married to Miss Amelia Mattausch in 1891 who preceded him in death. Surviving are his children; Joe P. Triesch of Benton City, Edward J. Triesch of Prosser, Mrs Oral Montgomery of Benton City and Mrs Alven Moran of Umatilla, Oregon; also twelve grandchildren and a brother Pete Triesch of Spokane and a sister Mrs. Frank Hattrup of Watsonville, California.

I do hereby revoke all former Wills and Testamentary dispositions heretofore and anytime made by me. 2. I direct that at my death my body has a plain burial but strictly carried out by and thru the Catholic clergy. 3. I direct that all bills involving my last sickness and death shall be paid first by my estate. 4. I direct that next all just and lawful bills and claims against my estate, and lawful (unreadable )shall be paid as soon as there is money in my estate to pay same. 5. I direct that after all provisions herein set forth have been met and fully cared for, the remainder of my estate shall be divided as follows: 6. To my daughter Mollie Triesch Moran $150.00. 7. Joe Mattausch, 67, who has been making his home with his brother-in-law John Voss, was struck by a hit and run driver near the Voss home late Friday night and sustained a broken left leg, a back injury and other bruises. He was taken in the local ambulance to the Sacred Heart hospital at Eau Claire where his injuries were dressed. No trace has been found up to this writing of the driver of the car that struck him, but promising clues are being followed up by the authorities. (Buffalo County Journal, Pg 7, col 4, 8 Oct 1936)

VICTIM OF HIT-RUN DRIVER SUCCUMBS FROM INJURIES Joseph Mattausch, who was struck by a hit-and-run driver near Mondovi on the night of Oct 2, died of injuries at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, Sunday. He was 66 years of age. Mattausch, who lived at the home of John Voss, his brother-in-law, for the last 15 years, was found lying on the detour road south of Mondovi, unconscious and in a serious condition. He is believed to have been on his way back to the Voss house since he was not far away from the home when he was found. He had left the house earlier in the evening. A brother, Edward Mattausch, town of Lincoln, is his nearest surviving relative. Before going to the Voss home to live, Mattausch lived with a cousin , Joseph Plett, on a farm north of Mondovi. He was born in Fountain City and for a number of years lived in Hutchinson Creek before going to Mondovi. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Voss home, Mondovi, and at the undertaking parlors. Rev. A.L. Klein, pastor of the Mondovi Methodist Church, officiated and burial was made in the Gilmanton cemetery . Among those from this vicinity who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Waldemar Gross, M rs. Fred Gross, Mrs Emma Jost, Nic. Jost, Mr. and Mrs. Miles Plank, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kreibich, Misses Evangeline Thoeny and Annabel Kent. Quite a number from the vicinity of Praag were also present. MRS. CHARLES MICHAELS

The death of Mrs. Charles Michaels occurred, at her home in the town of Modena, Monday evening, April 11th, 1904. Deceased had been ailing for years, being a sufferer from asthma and for two weeks past she was ill, with pneumonia, which resulted as above stated. Mrs. Michaels, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mattausch, of the town of Alma, was born at Fountain City, December 31st 1873 and grew up there. About thirteen years ago she came to the town of Alma with her parents and in October, 1896, she was married to her surviving husband, who with one child, a boy of five, mourns her untimely demise, which also brings sorrow to the hearts of her parents, three brothers, Edward, Joseph and William, three sisters, Minnie, Pauline and Eva. She was a dutiful wife, mother and daughter, a kind neighbor and true friend. The funeral takes place this forenoon, interment to be in the Gilmanton cemetery and the services to be conducted by Rev. Heusser, of the Reformed Church, of this city. To the bereaved family we extend condolence. May the deceased rest in peace. (Buffalo County Journal Wisconsin , 14 April 1904)

MATTAUSCH-HETRICK After rumors and predictions had on a previous occasion led to the belief that one of our popular young bachelors had formed a life partnership with an estimable young lady who was suspected of being a willing party to the event, the young couple bided their own time and slipped away to tie the nuptial knot, and without many being the wiser for a few days, they quietly established themselves in their new home at Alma, surprising their many friends when the news gradually became known in this vicinity . The marriage of Mr. William F. Mattausch and Miss Florence Hetrick took place at Wabasha , Minn., on Saturday, March 1, at ten O"clock a.m. Justice J.H. Smith performing the ceremony which united them as man and wife. The bride was tastily attired in blue taffeta, trimmed with georgette crepe and buttons. Miss Esther Hetrick, a sister of the bride, served as brides maid and also wore taffeta and georgette. Mr. Elmer Michaels, nephew of the groom, acted as best man, and like the groom wore a suit of blue serge. Returning from Wabasha the same day the wedding party enjoyed a pleasant luncheon at the former home of the bride in Nelson. The newly-wedded couple have taken up their residence in the house recently purchased from T.H . Kruse at the northern end of the city, and here they will find themselves welcome among neighbors to whom neither are strangers. The bride for the past year has been employed at the Burlington hotel as assistant during which time she has won the good will of both her employers and patrons for her cheerfulness and industry in her duties and previously she held a similar position at the hotel at Nelson. Most of her life has been spent at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hetrick, at Nelson, where her training in the art of housekeeping fitted her well for the tasks now awaiting her. The groom is fortunate in winning as his helpmate one so well endowed with womanly virtues, but that he deserves the best is the unanimous opinion of all his friends for many miles around, he having gained the good will of all his personal and business associates during recent years, After spending his earlier years assisting his parents, Mr.and Mrs. Joseph Mattausch in the management of their farm in the town of Alma, he for several years was a member of the livery firm of Miller & Mattausch, and for the past year he has taken charge of the Standard Oil agency here. With his genial and kindly disposition and his honest and accommodating conduct toward patrons, he has won the esteem of all with whom he has come into contact and with every one's good will his future is likely to be a prosperous one. OBITUARY

The funeral of Mrs. Robert Diekman took place on Wednesday, Jan. 31, the services being conducted by Rev. H.A.Block, and interment taking place in the local cemetery. Mrs. Dieckman, nee Pauline Mattausch, was born at Fountain City, May 7, 1879, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Joseph Mattausch. She spent her childhood there, and when thirteen years of age she came with her parents to the town of Alma, and made her home on the farm with them until her marriage to Robert Dieckman on Nov 10, 1901. Immediately after their marriage Mr .and Mrs. Dieckman made their home on a farm in French Valley in the town of Gilmanton, where they resided ever since. About a year ago she became ill with cancer, and although everything was done for her and the services of skilled physicians employed, she succumbed to the disease on Jan, 19, at the age of thirty-seven years. Deceased was a woman of fine character, possessed of all the attributes of a dutiful wife, a good mother, and a true friend, and her untimely demise brings to those nearest and dearest to her the heartfelt sympathy of her many friends. She leaves to mourn her death her husband and four children, Oscar, Walter, Milda, and Etta; also her aged parents, her three brothers, Edward, Joseph and William, and her three sisters, Mrs. Simon Triesch of Benton City, Wash., and Mrs. John Voss and Mrs. Chris. An event interesting to many people in this vicinity took place when Robert Dieckman and Miss Emma Mengelt were united in marriage at the courthouse at
Winona, Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 2pm. Judge Robert Looby pronouncing the words which united them as man and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Dieckman, brother and sister of the bride and groom served as witnesses. The bride was attired in a green silk dress and the groom wore a blue serge suit.
Both parties to this union have an excellent reputation among their circles of friends. The groom has for many years been a prosperous farmer of the town of Gilmanton, where they will make their future home. The bride has resided in this vicinity for many years past, keeping house for her brother William Mengelt, being known as a careful and industrious housekeeper.That Mr. and Mrs. Dieckman may find many years of happiness and growing prosperity is the wish of their many friends.

Obituary of Robert Henry Dieckman (1877-1957) Date and source unknown

Robert Henry Dieckman, son of Carl Dieckman and wife Minnie nee Hoffman, was born May 19, 1877 in French Valley in the town of Gilmanton. As a small boy, he was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Cream.
He spent his early life on the farm of his parents until the age of 24 years when he was united in marriage with Pauline Mattausch on Nov. 10, 1900. To this union four children were born. He farmed in French Valley on what was known as the Lester Parisio farm and lived there four years when he moved back to the Dieckman homestead.
On Jan 29, 1917, his wife passed away. He continued farming with his family.
On August 6, 1918, he was united in marriage with Emma Mengelt. After six years of their marriage, she passed away March 25, 1925.
On June 1933 he sold his farm to his sons and lived there until the family moved to Mondovi on Nov. 1, 1946. He passed away very suddenly at home on Friday, August 16, 1957 at the age of 80 years, 2 months and 27 days.
He is survived by two sons, Oscar and Walter, and two daughters, Milda and Etta, all of Mondovi; also four sisters, Mrs. Emelia Rast and Mrs. Minnie Williams, Mondovi, and Gustie ,Mrs Myron Rose, Gilmanton, and Anna, Mrs. M.S. Bond, Ashland and two brothers William, Mondovi, and Tony of Gilmanton and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Scharf (mispelled-should be Schaaf) and Mrs. Tillie Rose and two brothers, Albert and Charles.
Mr. Dieckman was a faithful husband, a loving and devoted father, and a most respected neighbor. His memory will long be cherished by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon in Trinity Lutheran Church at 2:00, the Rev. A.G. Helmer officiating. Mr. Mel Anshus sang "Softly and Tenderly" and "In the Garden." Burial took place in the Gilmanton Cemetery.
Pall bearers were Jack Zenger, Lawrence Weiss, Coy Anderson, Romeo Bloom, Fred Litchfield, and Elmer Smeltzer.

MARRIED

At the hospitable home of the bride's parents, in the town of Alma, last Saturday, November 17th, Franz Schieche, Esq., pronounced the words which unite for life, Miss Mathilda Mattausch and Mr. John W. Voss. The bride was attended by Misses Eva Mattausch and Josephine Voss , while the Messrs. Joseph Mattausch, Jr., and John Gluesing served in the capacity of best men. Hosts of friends and relatives from far and near, had assembled to congratulate the young couple and spend their day of honor with them. All were royally entertained and provided with the best that kitchen and cellar afford, the hospitalty of the host and hostess knowing no bounds. The young people amused themselves by dancing, to the tunes of the Mattausch orchestra and all present had a most enjoyable time. Both parties to this happy union are well known to many of our readers, the bride being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mattausch, of the town of Alma and a young lady, well qualified to assume the duties of housekeeper, while the groom who is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Voss, of the town of Gilmanton, is a industrious, young man and a jovial fellow. The young people have already gone to house keeping, on the Voss farm, in the above named town. John W. Voss, proprietor of the old Voss homestead farm in section 35, Gilmanton township , Buffalo County, was born on this farm February 3, 1880, son of John and Sophia (Bockenhauer ) Voss. He was educated in the district school, which he attended up to the age of 14 years , and has always remained on the home farm, assisting his father up to the time of the latter 's retirement in 1906, at which time he bought the place. The farm is located about four mile s from Gilmanton, twelve from Mondovi and twenty from Alma, the two latter villages being Mr . Voss's markets. The soil is good clay loam, and of the 155 acres, ninety are under plow. Mr . Voss carries on general farming and dairying and is breeding full blooded Holstein cattle a nd Poland-China swine, all the branches of his business being conducted on a profitable basis . Until 1916 he resided in the frame house built by his father, but in that year he built hi s present residence, a frame two-story modern dwelling, 28 by 28 by 16 feet in dimensions. H e has also erected a frame barn 24 by 40 by 12 feet, with a full stone basement, this latte r building having been constructed in 1910. In 1918 he erected a stave silo, 12 by 24. The gr anary, a frame building 14 by 22 by 12 feet, and the poultry house, 10 by 12 by 8 feet, wer e erected by his father. Mr. Voss has been clerk of his school district for some years, but i s not active in politics. He votes the Republican ticket. His fraternal society affiliation s are with Camp No. 2464, M.W.A., of Gilmanton. On November 17, 1906, Mr. Voss was united i n marriage with Matilda, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Herdeg) Mattausch, of Alma township, Bu ffalo, County. They have had three children, two of whom (twins) died in infancy. The survivi ng child is Frances, who was born April 11, 1911. INFLUENZA BRINGS DEATH TO THOENY FAMILY

One of the saddest family tragedies in the history of Buffalo county was the result of the terrible epidemic of influenza which has been raging in the northern end of the county for the past few weeks. Although not in direct contact, the homes of C.W. Thoeny of the town of Gilmanton and of Romeo Thoeny of the town of Lincoln were almost simultaneously stricken with the dreaded disease, both husband and wife of the former and the husband of the latter succumbing to the effects of pneumonia. Besides losing these parents, the children of both families suffered from the affliction, but all are fortunately on the road to recovery C.W. Thoeny and Romeo Thoeny were both sons of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Thoeny, formerly of Waumandee and Lincoln, but now residing at Mondovi. They leave surviving them, besides their families and parents, the following sisters: Mrs. Otto Gaebele of the town of Lincoln, Mrs Clayton Butler of Mondovi, Mrs. Raymond Schultz of the town of Alma, and Miss Wilma Thoeny of Mondovi. The tragic misfortune which has befallen the Thoeny families has cast a shadow of sadness and mourning in their community, and in fact throughout the county, as they had a wide acquaintance in this section and were highly esteemed by all. MRS. C.W. THOENY A short wifehood and motherhood was allotted to Mrs. C.W. Thoeny, but during those few years she proved the full devotion and sacrifice of which she was capable as a loyal and true woman. Eva Mattausch was born at Fountain City on September 28, 1889, and at four years of age she removed with her parents, Mr. and Mrs . Joseph Mattausch, to their farm in the town of Alma, near the Gilmanton town line. Since her marriage she has resided with her husband on their farm. Three children were born to her , Alma, Lillian, and Lorraine, who barely escaped suffering the fate of their parents when in fluenza invaded their home. After an illness of two weeks Mrs. Thoeny gave birth to another daughter, which safely survived the crisis, although the mother gave up her life shortly after , passing away on Wednesday afternoon, March 26, shortly after her husband succumbed to the same disease. Deceased leaves surviving her the four orphan children mentioned above, also her parents, Mr.and Mrs. Joseph Mattausch of the town of Alma her sister, Mrs. John Voss of Gilmanton, and her brothers, Edward now in Texas, Joseph of the town of Alma, and William F. General Notes: Christ William Thoeny, a well known and respected citizen of Gilmanton township, Buffalo County, where he is prosperously engaged in agricultural pursuits, his farm lying in section 2 4, was born in Waumandee township, this county, December 7, 1888. His parents were Jacob and Lena (Schultz) Thoeny, his father being a blacksmith, which occupation he followed for thirty-eight years. Both parents are still living, being residents of Mondovi village. Of their nine children three are now deceased, survivors being Chist W., Romie, Mabel, Eva, Linda and Wilma. Christ William Thoeny acquired the elements of an English education in the district school, after which for twelve years he worked for others, both as blacksmith and farmer. When 24 years old he bought a farm of 172 acres in section 36, Gilmanton township, which he operated until the fall of 1917, having 135 acres cleared and the balance in woodland. He then sold the place and bought his present farm of seventy-two acres in section 25, Gilmanton township, where he is engaged in mixed farming, mostly dairying and the raising of swine and horses for the market. He has an adequate set of buildings and his operations are yielding good financial results. On March 30, 1912, Mr. Thoeny married to Eva Mattausch, who was born in Fountain City, this county, September 28, 1889, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Herdeg) Mattausch. Their family circle has been enlarged by the birth of three children: Alma, born January 27, 1 913; Lillian, September 23, 1914; and Lorraine, July 23, 1916. CHRIST W. THOENY

Christ W. Thoeny was born in the town of Waumandee on March 17, 1888, and later resided with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Thoeny on their farm in the town of Lincoln. His marriag e to Miss Eva Mattausch took place on March 30, 1912. After residing on their farm in Little Waumandee Valley in the town of Lincoln, he removed with his family about a year ago to the farm which he purchased in the town of Gilmanton. During recent years he won a deserved reputation as an enterprising farmer, a good citizen and a desirable neighbor. To his family he was always a kind and devoted husband and father. Suddenly stricken with influenza in the prime of his life, when apparently in robust health and attending industriously to the strenuous duties of farm life, he was unable to resist the merciless ravages of the disease, and he passed away at three O'clock a.m., on Tuesday, March 25. From the woman of his choice he was not parted even in death, for his wife followed him to the Great Beyond the next day. Together they were laid in their last resting place in the Gilmanton cemetery, funeral services being held on Friday, March 28, Rev. F.A. Trautman officiating.

The daughters, Alma age 6 and Evangeline, of Christian W. Thoeny and Eva Mattausch Thoeny lived with their Aunt Matilda Mattausch Voss and John Voss Jr.after the deaths of their parents caused by the flu epidemic.

Henry Mattausch, who is successfully engaged in a general mercantile business at Pragg, Lincoln township, Buffalo County, as a member of the firm of Miller & Mattausch, was born in Praag, this county, Sept. 6, 1879, son of William and Gertrude (Tillman) Mattausch, who were born respectively in Austria and the United States. They had six children: Henry, Joseph, Gusta , Nichols, Ella and Julia, the last mentioned of whom died in infancy. Henry Mattausch acquired his education in the school of his district and was associated with his father on the latter's farm in Lincoln township until 1906, when he entered into his present business as a partner with Edward Miller. This enterprise has proved successful and the firm now carries a stock worth about $10,000 and have a good store building, with a saloon in connection with it. Mr. Mattausch owns a good house in which he resides, and is now serving as town treasurer of Lincoln township. He was married Nov. 27, 1909, to Emelia Miller, who was born in Clark County , daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Herbel) Mueller, the former of whom is now living at the a ge of 69 years, the latter being deceased. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Mueller were George , Albert, Louisa (deceased), Edward, Emelia (Mrs. Mattausch), Theodore, Arthur and Calvin, To Mr. and Mrs. Mattausch two children have been born: Lester H. Henry William Mattausch

Henry William Mattausch was born September 6, 1879 in the town of Lincoln, Buffalo County , son of William and Gertrude Mattausch.
He passed away at 4:15 p.m., Saturday, April 27, four days after entering Memorial Hospital in Neillsville.
Services were held at the Emmanuel Ev. And Reformed Church West of Greenwood. Rev. Charles Koch delivered the sermon. Two Selections were sung by the choir, "Abide With Me" and "Safe In The Arms of Jesus". Mrs. Walter Schwartz was the accompanist.
Burial was in the West Side Church Cemetery.
Mr. Mattausch was married to Emelia Miller November 27, 1909 at the home of his parents in the town of Lincoln. He attended the rural school at Pragg and lived most of his life in that community, excepting for a year the family spent in Texas.
He was a member of the Lincoln town board and served as treasurer and assessor for 15 years. He was a member of the Praag school district for eight years. He belonged to the Modern Woodman Lodge.
For 22 years he was a partner in the Miller-Mattausch General Store with his brother Joe and brother-in-law, the late Ed Miller. After the business was sold he turned to farming and then retired several years later.
At the age of 15 years he started to play the violin and with his father and brother entertained at many parties and weddings. The Mueller-Mattausch orchestra was well known throughout the territory. Members of the orchestra were Mr. Mattausch, his brother Joe and Mr. and Mr . Norman Mueller.

He is survived by his wife, Emelia, one son Lester of Milwaukee, one daughter Mrs. Delores Wendt of Owen, two grandchildren, Karen Kay and Judy Ann; his mother, Gertrude of Pragg who is 97 years old; two brothers, Joseph and Nikolas, both of Pragg. One sister died in infancy.
Flower girls for the funeral were Karen Kay Wendt, Sandra Miller, Judy Ann Wisynski land Barbara Wehrman. Pallbearers were Rudoph Mueller and Paul Langenegger, Praag; George Gross , Alma; Herman Balk, Gilmanton; and Frank Zirzow and Charles Balk, Cochrane.

Former Alma Area Man Notes 100th Birthday

Joseph "Sepp" Mattausch celebrated his 100 birthday Monday, with a smile on his face and lots of friends and relatives at his side. Apparently "Sepp", as he's affectionately known , has had that smile for a number of years, for it appeared quite natural there--and apparently the friends and relatives are many, for the lines of people which came to see this man reach this rare milestone seemed endless. Sepp is now a resident of the Wabasha Nursing Home and with the help of the Activities Director Becky Borgwardt and a number of others at the Nursing Home, along with the relatives, Sepp had a grand birthday party. Wabasha Mayor John Meisch was on hand to pay tribute to this former guitar picker-horn player (both at once, no less) . Meisch offered a Proclamation from the city, commemorating this historic occasion. Mattausch--who was never married and at least to some, including Ms. Borgwardt, that may be the reason he has lived so long--grew up on a farm near Alma, Wisconsin. His family came from Czechoslovakia and settled near Praag, a tiny community about 13 miles from Alma. Mattausch' s nephew, Orville, who still farms in the Praag area, was on hand for the ceremonies, which were attended by many of the Nursing Home residents as well as the many friends and relatives, and related much about his uncle's life. He was most noted for his ability to play the baritone horn while strumming a guitar. The contraption that he used to accomplish this fete, was on hand at the Nursing Home Monday. It features three foot pedals, each attached to a string which depressed the valves on the horn. In this way, he could free his hands for playing the guitar. He apparently loved to play for wedding dances, his nephew recalled . He seldom plays the guitar anymore, Borgwardt noted, but he does some chords on the piano now and then. He got his nickname, according to Miller, from a Bohemian pronunciation of Joseph. They used to say "Joe-sepp" and thus, the nickname Sepp. The party was a happy one. Folks came steadily to greet Sepp and others looked at many pictures of the homestead , the family gatherings, and so forth. One lady asked him if he could remember her. "Why by golly, ya 'oughta" she chuckled, "I used to come over and ask ya to dance all the time at them ballroom dances we went to!" referring to an era of fun that probably has been forgotten by many. JOSEPH MATTAUSCH

March 28, 1983 was a special day at the Wabasha Nursing Home as it marked the 100th birthday of Joseph Mattausch. He was born in Praag, Wisconsin, Joseph who was nicknamed "Sepp" by family and friends was raised on a farm with is two brothers and three sisters. Sepp and his sister founded the first general store named Miller-Mattausch General Store at Praag. As Sepp preferred to work outside he was given the job of picking up supplies and delivering goods, but with a horse drawn cart and after the turn of the century, a motorized truck. His hobby was playing in a band. His instrument was the guitar but in time he also played the baritone for which he built a frame so he could play it with his feet while strumming the guitar. Mattausch-Veraguth Wedding

On Tuesday occurred the marriage of Miss May Veraguth to Mr. Nicolas Mattausch of the town of Lincoln. The ceremony took place at the Lutheran Church parsonage, Fountain City, at one o'clock p.m. Rev. August Vollbrecht of the Lutheran Church officiated. Witnesses to the ceremony Miss Delores Mattausch, Praag , niece of the groom, and Mr. Chester Veraguth, brother of the bride.
The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Veraguth, town of Buffalo, and had been staying at home assisting with the duties of the farm. The groom has been employed as a farm laborer.
For her dress the bride chose white satin, with a veil held in place with orange blossoms . Her bouquet was made up of lilies, pink roses and baby's breath. The bridesmaids wore a dress of pink satin and wore a corsage bouquet of mixed flowers. The groom and his attendant wore suits of navy blue.
A wedding supper was held at the brides's home in the evening to which only near relatives were invited. A wedding dance to which their friends were welcome was held in the evening at the Becker's Wayside Pavilion, the Smiling Stars orchestra furnishing the music.
Mr. and Mrs. Mattausch will make their home this winter with Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Heller, the latter being a sister of the bride.
The wish of their many friends is that they may have a long and successful wedded life.

He had been engaged in farming. General Notes: Joseph C. Plett, proprietor of a fine general stock farm of 320 acres in sections 29, 30 , 31 and 32, Albany township, Pepin County, was born in Buffalo County, Wisconsin, near Gilma nton, Oct. 24, 1879. His parents were George and Theresa (Mattausch) Plett, the father bein g a native of Germany and the mother of Switzerland. They were married, however in Wisconsin , George Plett coming to America when a young man and locating near Gilmanton, where he resid ed for about two years. Later he bought land in Buffalo County and was engaged in farming the re until about 1900, when he moved to the farm in Albany township, Pepin County, now occupie d by his son Joseph. He became quite a prosperous citizen being the owner of several farms, b ut finally retired and is now living in Mondovi. Joseph C. Plett was the third born in his pa rents' family of nine children. He attended district school in Buffalo County, and lived wit h his father until 21 years old, helping him to operate his extensive farms. After his marria ge he settled on the place where he now lives which he is operating as a general stock farm , breeding Durham cattle, Shropshire sheep and other good stock. He devotes all his working h ours to the farm and so far taken no part in local government affairs. In 1918 Mr. Plett erec ted a fine residence of nine rooms, of modern construction, and installed with bath, hot an d cold water, furnace heat and electric lights. He has also built a new barn, 24 by 46 feet i n ground dimensions with modern equipment. On June 30, 1909, Mr. Plett was united in marriag e with Emma Scheiner, daughter of Fred and Theresa (Yahn) Schreiner, of Albany. He and his wi fe are the parents of one child Lenora Medora, who was born July 13, 1911. Plett, who owns and operates a fine farm of 280 acres in section 32, Gilmanton t ownship, Buffalo County, was born on this farm, January 5, 1884, son of George and Tracy (Mat tausch) Plett. He acquired a somewhat limited education, attending district school No. 3 at i ntervals up to the age of 16 years, the greater part of his time being occupied with work o n the home farm as his father's assistant. In 1908, with his brother Adolph he bought the pla ce and they conducted it in partnership until 1916, in which year George R. purchased his bro ther's interest and has since been the sole owner. Of the 280 acres he now has 250 under th e plow, the balance being in timber and pasture. The farm is provided with a good two story f rame house, consisting of upright and wing; a frame barn 32 by 116 by 16 feet in size, with f ull stone basement, cement floors and modern equipment; a frame granary 14 by 18 by 16, wit h corn crib and tool shed attached, and a second tool shed and garage, 16 by 30 by 8 feet. M r Plett also possesses a fine Reo automobile, while his farm equipment is of the best and mos t modern type. He is prosperously engaged in general farming and dairying, having a herd of t hirty graded Holstein cows, with twenty-five head of young cattle, also a herd of about 100 C hester-White swine. The farm is composed of rolling land, the soil being black loam, and is l ocated equidistant between Mondovi and Alma cities, which are his markets. Mr. Plett was marr ied November 28, 1916, to Minnie, daughter of Charles and Mary (Henning) Burmeister, of Alm a township. In politics Mr. Plett is a Republican, but so far has not taken an active part i n local government matters. Edna Steen

Service for Edna Steen, 99, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Fu neral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Mrs. Steen, who was born in Wisconsin, died Wednesday. She moved to Waverly, Wash., area when she was a child. She and her husband lived on a family homestead. She moved to Spokane in 1979. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Plaza Grange and Zion Lutheran Church in Fairfield. She is survived by two sisters, Anna Irwin of Liberty Lake and Palma Richardson of Spokane.

Joseph "Joe" and his sister Teresa lived with "Aunt Liz" and H.J. Schaaf in Colton, Washington while attending Catholic instructions.

Joseph Peter Triesch, his mother, father, brother and sisters left Colton, Washington sometime after 1907. Between 1907 and 1912 the family lived in Mesa, Washington and Selah, Washington. Mesa was called Judson in 1900. We do not know which place he lived first but think that it was in Mesa, Washington. Joe attended Marquette grade School in Yakima, Washington. He quit school to work and help his parents pay his brothers way to Pullman College.
1912 The family moved to Kiona Washington

On 1 Aug 1917 Joseph Triesch joined the U.S. Army in Prosser, Washington and took his training at Camp Lewis, Washington and then assembled at Fort Walla Walla, Washington. Then on to France and Germany to fight in WW I. He was discharged from the Army, 29 June 1919, at Camp Lewis, Washington.

Joseph Triesch was a barber in Tacoma, Washington before moving back to Benton City, Washington with his wife, Mahala Winnifred Byers and their young son, Otto Joseph Triesch.

Simon Martin Triesch, Joseph's father, lived with Joseph and his wife until a short time before his death. He also had lived with daughters Mollie and Theresa and son Ed and their families. Simon Martin Triesch died in 1935.

The following is from a newspaper clipping in September 1926: "Joe and Winnifred Triesch traded their Benton City property for a poultry farm on the coast to Mr. Whitehead. A going away party was held for them with 125 people attending."

JOE TRIESCH WAS 1912 PIONEER OF BENTON CITY

Joseph P. Triesch, 100 Kiona Ave., Benton City, died Thursday, June 24, 1976 at the Veterans Hospital in Walla Walla, being born in Colton, Whitman County, February 20, 1894.
He came to Benton City in 1912 and was employed variously, enlisting in the Army in WWI serving overseas in France. He was employed by General Electric on the Hanford Project as a custodian, retiring in 1959.
He was a member of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church in Benton City and was a member of Muernice Wilson Post No. 115 of the American Legion, active in the civic life in Benton City.
Surviving are his wife, Winnifred L. Triesch, and son, Otto Triesch, at home; daughter, Mrs. Don (Scharmal) Conley of Kennewick; sister, Mrs. A.T. Moran, Milton-Freewater, Ore.; and four grandchildren.
Following Rosary on Monday at the church at 7 p.m., Requiem Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m . Tuesday in St Francis Xavier Cabrini Church with the Rev. Msgr. William J. Sweeney celebrant.
Burial was made in the Sunset Memorial Gardens on the by-pass highway in Richland by bearers; Ernest Feuerborn, Milton Epperson, Lacy Allen, Richard Howard, Thomas Mathews, George Lanman; and honorary bearers Ercy Morse and Walter Krom of Post 115, American Legion arrangements by Einan's Funeral Home.

She was born on December 28,1913 in French Valley, Town of Gilmanton to Robert and Pauline (Mattausch) Dieckman. She farmed with her family in the Town of Gilmanton. In 1946 the family moved to Mondovi where Etta worked at Anschus' Jewelry Store, Jack's Jewelry and the Farmer's Store. Etta was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and it's ladies organizations. She was the coordinator for the funeral luncheons at Zion for many years. She is survived by several cousins. Alma was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Alma.

Survivors include one daughter, Marlene Benson of La Crosse, Wis.; one
son, Darrell (Alana) Gross of Alma; two grandchildren, Scott (Angie)

Alma, Wis - Lillian M. Kreibich, 89, of Alma, died Tuesday, Dec 23, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Wabasha, Minn.

She was born Sept. 23, 1914, in Gilmanton, Wis., to Christ and Eva (Mattausch) Thoeny. On July 29, 1933, she married Harry Kreibich at Alma. He died Feb. 6, 1999.

When Lillian was four years old, she lost her parents to the flu epidemic of 1919. along with her sisters, Alma, Lorraine and Van, she was raised by John and Florence Voss. From this beginning, Lillian had a strong sense of family. Together with her sisters, they lived a lifetime within four miles of each other.

Lillian did her best work in the kitchen. She'll best be remembered for her pies, pear bread, raised doughnuts and egg coffee.

Lillian was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Alma.

Survivors include on daughter, Marilynn Ramer of Alma, Wis., three sons, Gene (Elizabeth) Kreibich of River Falls, Wis., Larry (Laurie) Kreibich of Spring Valley, Wis., and Gale (Susan) Kreibich of La Crosse, Wis.; nine grandchildren; 15 great -grandchildren; and two sisters, Lorraine Pank of Pepin, Wis., and Evangeline Ludwigson of Alma Wis.

She was preceded in death by her husband; on granddaughter, April Ramer Gibbs; one great -grandson, Billy Gibbs; her parents; and one sister, Alma Gross.

Lost his battle with cancer on June 12, 2008 in Spokane, WA. He was born on December 2, 1925 to Ewald and Amanda Mattausch in Waverly, WA. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife, Betty; a brother, Willis; a son; and a granddaughter. He is survived by his sister Audrey Hutchins of Palo Alto, CA; his seven children, Carol, Rhonda, Bruce, Cyndi, Dale, Brian, and Kevin; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Waverly Couple Found Killed

Shotgun blasts early Thursday killed two southern Spokane County residents who had baked pies for the elderly and delivered bread to the needy
Two young men who accepted food, shelter and friendship from Allen and Trudy Mattausch are in jail, suspected of gunning down the well-known couple in their Waverly farmhouse.
Residents from Rockford to Tekoa, Wash., shook their heads in disbelief as news of the slayings spread across the Palouse. They wondered aloud about a world in which caring people such as the Mattauschs could meet such a violent end.
"Why someone would murder them, I don't know," said neighbor Herman Holling, 91. "They were so damn good-hearted."
Cheyenne T. Brown, 20, and his friend, 19-year-old K.C. Therriault, were booked into the county jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. They are scheduled to make their first appear ance in District Court today
Friends and relatives said the victims had allowed Brown, a convicted felon, to live in a mobile home on their 6-acre farm for the past several months. He did odd jobs for room and board, according to the victims' son, Richard Mattausch. The couple even forgave Brown after he stole their pickup truck last October, their son said.
Brown served 60 days in jail and was ordered to pay Allen Mattausch $640 in restitution for the theft, according to court records. But Richard Mattausch said his parents decided to "let bygones be bygones." They invited Brown back to the farm at 36815 S. Dunn Road to work off the debt. "Dad said, 'You come down, and we'll make this right,' " Richard Mattausch said . "He wasn't exactly a man who went to church every Sunday, but he lived it." Sheriffs deputies said Therriault recently moved in with Brown.
The slain couple, married 42 years, were well-known for their generosity in the farm towns of southern Spokane County.
"If there is any role model you would wish for in our society, they would be it, " Richard Mattausch said. "They didn't have a dime, but they always had room for an extra plate at the table."
Allen Mattausch, 66, was an active member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter and was willing to volunteer to help anyone who needed it, friends said. Latah Mayor Chuck Crockett, who knew the man for nearly 50 years, said Mattausch would buy day-old bread from local bakeries and deliver it to low-income residents throughout the Palouse. "If someone needed help, he was right there, " said Crockett, choking back tears.
This past September, the retired postal worker, farmer and Army Veteran was named an All-American Post Commander of the VFW.
Trudy Mattausch, 63, worked as a cook at the Good Samaritan nursing home in Fairfield and used to take home-baked cookies and pies in for the staff and residents. "She was a wonderful lady with a great sense of humor," said Virginia Langston, Good Samaritan administrator. " We'll miss them both desperately."
Sheriff John Goldman called the slayings a "very heinous crime" that "terrified this smal l community."
The shootings apparently occurred sometime before dawn in a first-floor bedroom of the Mattausch home, Goldman said. Both victims were shot in the head. The Sheriff would not say whether they were killed in their sleep. One of the couple's four sons discovered their bodies about 3:30 a.m., when he arrived at the house to pick up something, Goldman said. The son, who wasn't identified, told deputies he saw his parents' pickup truck heading north on U.S. Hig hway 195 as he was driving south from Spokane.
Later that day, Officer Ray Harding was patrolling near Mission Park in Spokane when he noticed two men in a two-tone Ford pickup acting suspiciously, Goldman said. Harding was following the truck when an all-points bulletin came over the radio alerting authorities to be on the lookout for the stolen truck. The officer stopped the truck and took Brown and Therriault into custody. Police and sheriffs deputies reportedly found two guns in the pickup.
Brown has a history of felony convictions dating back to 1995. He served time for forgery and car theft, records show. In November, a state corrections officer urged a judge to keep the repeat offender behind bars for as long as possible. Brown is continuing to go about his non-compliant anti-social behavior, Larry Young wrote in a memorandum. Information about Therriault was sketchy Thursday. He has no felony convictions in Spokane County, and deputies are unsure of his connection to Brown. "We've heard reports that they're both from Montana, so maybe they know each other from there," said sheriff's spokesman Dave Reagan.
Many people who knew the Mattauschs said they weren't suprise Brown was involved in their deaths. "He just wasn't the type of person I would have felt comfortable with," said Mayor Crockett, who met Brown last November. "Apparently he was someone who led Alllen to believe he was in need. He took him under his wing and trusted him."

A little boy born in Yakima WA. to Joseph and Winnifred Triesch.was named Otto Joseph, born Sep 20^th 1922 weighing in at 9 pounds. He had lots of dark hair becoming thick and curly in years to come. Then OOPS! He didn't need a comb.
The family lived on a farm in Benton City Wa for most of Otto's toddler years. About 1928 the family of three moved to Tacoma where Otto attended Holy Rosary School.
After Christmas one year he gathered all of the discarded Christmas trees and delivered them one by one back to the neighbors.

Otto and his parents moved back to Benton City in the early 1930s where they raised asparagus, black angus cattle, grapes, alfalfa, chickens, pigs and fruit on their 60 acre farm. As a young adult, Otto worked beside his parents at various tasks. However he was never fond of the farm work.
When Otto was 17, his baby sister was born in Prosser on the hottest day ever recorded there on July 27, 1939 (114) degree. He always protected and watched over her however she was a little rascal to him. She would jump off of the barn onto his back when he was carrying buckets of milk to the house. Otto has no other brothers or sisters.
He has always been a kind and gentle man and has had many good friends throughout his long life.
He has never been married, has never inhaled cigarette smoke nor has he cussed or drank. He has survived numerous surgeries determined to keep going with a positive attitude (No wonder he lives to age 85)-just like the energizer bunny. He just keeps going and going.
The family farm was sold in 1952 making Otto very happy to move to town where he lived near his & grandmother and parents for many years. About 1959 he inherited a small house from his grandmother. Otto and his parents were once again living together. Otto's sister was married, living in Kennewick with her family. He would visit and enjoy being with his nieces and nephews. They call him "UNKIE."Scott told his mother he was about age 10 before he knew Otto had another name besides UNKIE. Unkie now has 8 great nieces and nephews and 2 great great nieces.
Otto's dad passed away June 1976, leaving Otto and his mother still living in Benton City.
When the Washington Street Dessert Villa Apt. was being built, Otto and his mother applied to move into one of the Apartments when completed. In the meantime they sold their home and moved in with Otto's sister and family waiting for the completion of the building. The steel strike delayed construction so the two families lived together for 18 months. Otto had a dog named Chris which he left with his sister to care for.
The day finally arrived and Otto and Winnifred Triesch moved into Apt 328-2 bedroom on So. Washington St. where they made many friends and both joined the Senior Citizens center becoming very involved in most activities. bingo, square dancing, pool, ceramics, dominoes, dards, exercise classes. Otto received a certificate for 28 years of volunteer service at the Senior Center. He belonged to the Kettle Scrappers, was in many parades. He played Santa Clause for many years. He always had many unique costumes for Halloween and enjoyed most of the activities. Helped deliver meals on wheels and served beverages and washed dishes at the Senior center noon meals. He loves to fish and travel. He had a pet Finch and asked his sister to care for it while he was visiting friends. He hasn't asked her to care for or any more of his things. He has always grown plants and flowers and planted a garden.
Otto's mother died in 1984, he moved into apt # 227- A (1) bedroom on South Washington. St. where he resided until most recently when he fell and broke his ankle. His doctor advised him to discontinue living alone. This decision was difficult, however Otto knew this was the best thing to do and agreed to leave Dessert Villa where he has lived for 29 years. He moved to the adult family home belonging to Denise and John Larson on 26^th and Garfield in Kennewick during July 2007.
Today, many of Otto's friends, neighbors, relatives and special care providers are here to help him celebrate his 85^th birthday.
We want to thank all of these special persons in Otto's life for taking him to decorate family graves, to Church and to many of the various activities he has been involved in over the many years. Bringing him goodies, looking after him when he was recuperating from surgeries, and unlocking his door when he was locked out. Taking him to various appointments. Taking him to Mariners games.( As you all probably know he is a big fan). Thanks for taking him to the fair and to the ocean as well as community events and dinners at your home.
Thank you for all of the phone calls, well wishes, visits and cards when he was in the hospital and Life care.

Douglas J. Montgomery

Douglas J. Montgomery died Sunday at the Kennewick Life Care Center. He was 64. He was a longtime area resident who lived on 8th Avenue in Benton City.
Born in Prosser, he received his early schooling in Benton City. He entered the armed services in 1942, and was later employed in various jobs in the Yakima Valley. In 1948 he returned to Benton City and was employed in the Hanford area until his retirement in 1978.
He is survived by his son Michael Montgomery of Tracy, Calif., and a daughter, Linda Greci of Livermore, Calif,; and by a sister, Pat Weber of Kennewick.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Mueller's Chapel of the Falls in Kennewick. A funeral mass is scheduled Thursday at 2 p.m. at Benton City Xavier Catholic Church.

Douglas married Helen Ruth Brooks, daughter of Preston Brooks and Marion,. The marriage ended in divorce. Helen was born on 29 Apr 1924 in Benton City, Benton County, Washington, died on 17 Nov 2005 in Spokane, Spokane County, Washington at age 81, and was buried in Kennewick, Benton County, Washington.

General Notes: WENATCHEE:-Lawrence Wilhelm Triesch, 71, of Wenatchee died Friday, Feb 16, 1996, in Central Washington Hospital. He was born at Mabton, Wash., on Feb 27 1924, to Edward J. Triesch and Louise (LaPlante) Triesch. He graduated from Prosser High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and received an injury which cost him his right eye. Following a medical discharge he moved to Monitor. He worked on various farms in the Monitor and Wenatchee Valley as an orchard worker and worked in the packing sheds. Mr Triesch was a crossword enthusiast and was active in bowling until bad health forced him to quit. Survivors include three brothers, Ray of Wenatchee, Richard of Sumner, and Mel of Tacoma; two sisters, Esther Clair of Shelton and Mary Worley of Elk, Wash; one aunt, Edith LaPlante of Lewiston, Idaho; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Cheryl Frank of Wenatchee. He was preceded in death by one brother. Arrangements are by Betts Funeral Home, Wenatchee.

Melvin G. Triesch Sr. passed away at his borne in Spanaway surrounded- rounded by his family on April 12. 2004 after a long battle with cancer. Mel was born November 8. 1927 in Prosser. Washington, son of Edward and Louise Triesch. Mel came to Pierce County in 1942. he graduated from Sumner High School. class of 1946. He was in lumber sales all his life. starting as a teenager in Sumner. Mel was well known in the lumber business in the Tacoma area. He started Fircrest supply in the early 60's, he also worked for Puget Sound Plywood and Georgia Pacific before going to work in the Olympia area. He retired from Bayview Building Materials in 1992. He was a member of WBMA 40 year club.
Mel was an Army veteran. serving during the occupation of Japan. Mel liked all sports and was a big Mariners fan. He coached little league baseball and soccer when his sons were growing up After retiring he and Pat enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Yuma. Az.
Mel is survived by his wife of 45 years. Pat; sons. James of Newberg. OR. and Melvin Jr. of Spanaway. WA; daughters. Cally (Ron) Leighton of Renton. WA. Donna (Robert) Hays of Kennewick. WA. Patricia Louise Triesch Our mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and great-great-grandmother passed away on July 9,2010 after a long battle with cancer. Pat Triesch was born in Urbana, Illinois March 7, 1931. She moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1957. Pat was preceded in death by her mother, father, ' husband, and sister. Mom to five, grandmother to ten, great-gandmother to 17 with two more on the way, and great-great-grandmother to three. Known as Mom, Mom-O-Grandma, Granny, Grams, Great-Grandma Mom-O and Mumsie by succeeding generations. A devoted mother, Pat divided her time between kids, soccer and family. She was also known as"The Cake Lady" by her church. She survived by her sister Rosalie Stewart, brother Karl Smith (Linda), daughters Donna Hays (Robert), Barbara Abshier, Callie Lelgiton (Ron), and sons James Triesch (Tracey) and Melvin Triesch, Jr. (Chris) and the many grand, great -grand, and great-great-grandchildren that she was blessed with. And of the many nieces and nephews a special thanks to Anita Hays for all the love, care and support she has given Mom.
