General Notes: This is the earliest known ancestor of the Pittman Family. He and his wife, Anna Catherina, were living in Framersheim, Germany in the 1660's and he died there 16 Feb 1708, age 80. It is possible that he was born elsewhere because there are no other individuals in the village with the name Pittman except his only know son, Hans Heinrich and his descendants. 13. Nicholas Pitman was born on 19 Dec 1727 in Framersheim, Rhineland Pfalz, Germany and died in 1798 in Strasburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia at age 71.

General Notes: Source of information on the Pittman family came from Sherry Carrell in California and Jake Mauck in Topeka,Kansas, who quote from a book by the name of "The descendants of Peter Mauck 1 708-1980".

A footnote in the above book on Nicholas and Catherine Snapp Pittman, John Pittman's parents , as follows: "Pittman was often spelled with only one "t" in the early days, but later two were generally used. The family name in origin is occupational - a "Pit" man being a miner". Nicholas came to America abt 1740 from Bingen, on the Rhine River. As a pioneer farmer he lived upon his land north of Strasburg, Va, on Cedar Creek in Shenandoah Co., Nicholas served in the Rev. War, (see DAR Patriot Index). All of his children emigrated to Corydon , Indiana except Lawrence. (Lawrence acquired an estate of several thousand acres in Shenandoah Co., and erected as his home the famous mansion, "Red Banks", which still stands today about 10 miles south of Woodstock, Virginia.) There is also a book out "The Nicholas Pitman Family of Va" published in Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Gen. Magazine. Vol 32, pp 139-145, 234 -245, 313-324. Also a note on Catherine Snapp Pittman. She was the daughter of John and Barbara Snapp. See Frederick Co., Va Will book No 3, page 35, for John Snapp's Will."

In the early part of the 18th century, southern Germany had been scourged by war, pestilence and famine to such an extent that life there had become unbearable for many of the inhabitants.

The Palatinate and upper Rhine state is one area which the inhabitants moved out in great numbers. There were so many immigrants moving that they were called "Palatines". This was true in England where many took refuge.

Philadelphia was the port of entry of the great majority of German refugees. In fact, they came in such numbers, that officials became alarmed. A law was passed, whether single or married , be properly registered by name, the vessel they came on and from what port, giving name of the captain, and port of landing. They were further required to sign an oath of abjuration to the government of Pennsylvania.

Most of these lists have been preserved. Little is know about Nicholas.

Nicholas Pitman and two cousins came over from Bingen-on-the-Rhine, Germany, about 1740. The y bought land near Strasburg, Virginia, Then Frederick County, later became Shenandoah County . They were religious and some were musicians.

One reason that there is not more Pitman information is because of the translation or corruption of it. The entries on old church records is "Bittman" and the records show "Bittman" and "Biettman". A gradual approach to American spelling, and finally became "Pitman" in English . The names Pittman and Pitman are used by various branches of the family.

Nicholas Pitman is not listed with the German immigrants of "Pennsylvania Pioneers" so it is evident that he did not land at port Philadelphia. It is assumed that they landed about 174 0 along with the Bakers, Conrads, Wills, and Snapps of near Winchester, Virginia.

Lawrence Pitman was the progenitor of many Pitmans and some migrated to Harrison County, Indiana and to Ohio.

Phill Pittman was also a Shenandoah County man. He married Susannah Grabill and had the following children: Emanuel, David, Jonathan and Abraham.

April 9, 1775, Nicholas Bitman and Frau Catharina took communion with about 45 other people at St. Pauls Lutheran Church of Strasburg.

September 27, five adult children of Nicholas Bittman and Frau Catharina were baptized into membership of the church.

The present writers do not believe that the name Pitman was the original German name but the many translations and English speaking people, it became Pitman.

The court records in Shenandoah and Frederick Counties where notices of transfers of land, deeds, etc. show the form Pitman.

The following are from the register of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Strasburg, Virginia. T he entries in chronological order are:

On April 9, 1775, "Nicholas Bittman" and Catharina Bittman (German feminine form) partook of communion with about forth-five other persons named.

On September 27th, 1776, five adults were baptized into membership in the the church and "Nicholas Bitman und Frau Catharina" are listed as witnesses.

On December 5th, 1785, "Nicholas Bittman und seine Ehefrau" were again witnesses at the baptism of several Children.

On the 29th of October, 1790, "Nicholas Bittman" and "sein Haufrau Catharina:" were sponsor s at the baptism of Johann Scheider's infant son.

On the 20th of October, 1797, "Benja Grabill" and wife, Catharine were sponsors at the christ ening of Magdalena, infant daughter of "Johannes Bitman" and "Frau Elisa".

On the 19th of March 1797, "Dorentz (Lawrence) and Cath Bitman" had their infant son baptized Philip. The child had been born on the 22nd of January of that year and the sponsors were Lawrence's brother "Johannes Bitman" and "Frau Elisabeth".

On Mar 25th, 1804, Peter Mauck was godfather at the Christening of "Philip Peter", infant son of "Johannes Bitman and Frau Elisa.

And again, on September 19, 1807, "Johannes and Catherine Schneider" were sponsors, "Johannes Bitman and Frau Eliza had a son Christened David.

The earliest documentary evidence or record of Nicholas Pitman that we find bears the date of Mary 3rd, 1760. On that day, he bought of Lewis and Mary Stephens for 10 three lots in the town of Stephensburg, "Part of a larger tract of 674 acres granted to Peter Stephens October 3, 1734." Although his wife is not mentioned in this transaction, Nicholas Pitman was probably married at that time, 1760, for the will of his father in law, John Snapp, discussed above, dated November 30, 1761, names Catherine A. Pitman as his daughter.

On June 7, 1763, Nicholas Pitman bought three more lots in the town of Stephenburg of Lewis Stephens. Again "at a court held on Tuesday, May 28th, 1776... Among those transferring land were the following: Ch. Whitmore and wife to Nicholas Pitman..." Wayland records 1777, February 24, 25 Nicholas and Catherine Pitman sell to John Heckman for L150.5, 100 acres on North River of Shenandoah; land conveyed to Pitman by Christian Whitmore, S.C.D.B.B, pg 436.

Nicholas Pitmans Revolutionary War Record is indicated solely by the inclusion of his name in: "A list of Captain Alexander Machir's Company in the Strasburg District (15th): "Pitman , Nicholas". Also named in the list are: Philip Pitman, Lawrence Snapp, Peter Snapp and Philip Snapp, Jun'r Ensign.

In the census of Shenandoah of 1785, Nicholas Pitman is named in the list returned by Samuel Porter as being the head of a family of eight whites and possessing one dwelling, and one other building. From this it would seem that Nicholas and Catherine had others than their three children living with them.

On September 30, 1797, Nicholas Pitman, farmer, conveys to his son, Lawrence Pitman, farmer 2 02 acres "in the said County of Shenandoah", originally belonging to Martin Roller, for L200 . On this same date, Lawrence Pitman and his wife, conveyed 100 acres, a part of the same tract to John Pitman for L200. Although not stated, these two transactions May have been connected with the settlement of Nicholas Pitman's estate. an Examination of the tax records in Richmond shows Nicholas a taxpayer each year up to and including 1797, but not thereafter. He probably died that year.

"On the property located two miles south of Strasburg, on the Shenandoah River, are located the graves of Nicholas Pitman and his wife. I have seen them at a distance. Two large blocks of limestone, I understand. The present owner of the property told us these stones had no inscriptions on them, so we did not visit them. This place was the farm purchased by Nicholas , where he made his home. There seems to no doubt that Nicholas and his wife sleep there".

RED BANKS

Nicholas Pittman came from Bingen on the Rhine about 1740. The Conrads and Bakers of Winchester came over in the same vessel with him. He bought a farm on the north branch of the Shenandoah River near Fishers Hill and married a daughter of Johannes Snapp of Gen Mahlenberg's Church at Woodstock.
All the children of Nicholas Pittman emigrated to Corydon, Indiana, except Lawrence, who married Catherine Will and became the owner of the noted Red Banks farm, where in 1802 he erected the large brick house. Red Banks was a favorite stopping place for travelers from Baltimore going to the Greebriar White Sulphur Springs. Madam Jerome Boneparte (nee Patterson) always spent the night there on her way to the latter place. General Jackson (Old Hickory) used to stop over and take the children on his knee.
Lawrence Pittman, son of Nicholas, had ten grandsons in the Confederate Army. Philip Pittman, his oldest son, at the age of 16, served in the War of 1812, and in 1861, at the age of 64, he enlisted in the Confederate Army, taking with him his youngest son, just 16 years old . The last year of the struggle, his friends implored him to come home and be a candidate for the Virginia Senate. His reply was the army had no soldiers to spare, but if they wished to elect him they could do so, but he would remain in the army until officially notifide of his election. He was elected, but remained at his post until the Senate convened.
During the Civil War, in the spring of 1862, Stonewall Jackson's Army camped several times at Red Banks. Camp Buchannan was the name of his camp. It is probable that the famous Stone wall lodged in the old mansion at Red Banks on these occasions. If so, one may be curious to know whether he was aware that Andrew Jackson had been a guest there a few years earlier.
The records in Woodstock show that on August 8, 1803, Lawrence Pittman bought 347 acres (evidently the Red Bank Tract) from Abraham Bird and Rachel his wife for $5,555.56. The said tract is described as being "on the northeast side of the north river of Shenandoah, it being part of 550 acres conveyed to Abraham Bird by George Ruddle and Magdalene his wife, February 1 0, 1776" The sale by Bird was witnessed by Jacob Rinker, Samuel Walton and Lewis Moore.
The records also show that on September 1, 1849, Lawrence Pittman Sr., sold Red Banks farm (375 acres) and another tract (186 acres) formerly belonging to Abraham Bird, to William R pley for $18,900.00.

Nicholas Pitman Came from Framersheim Germany arriving in America 15 Sep 1749 on "Edinburgh " with cousin Philip Becker, Signed "Nicholas Biedman" Lived on Cedar Creek, Shenandoah County, Virginia. Revolutionary War Veteran.

General Notes: It is probable that Anthony Pitman was with his brother Nicholas in 1749 but he does not appear on the oaths of allegiance since he was under 16 years of age at the time. This is supported by the fact that in 1760 he cast a vote for George Washington to the Virginia legislature , something he could do only if he were a naturalized citizen. Anthony Pitman purchased property in Stephen City, Virginia, 6 Mary 1761 (Frederick County Virginia Deed Book 6, pg 269) He purchased additional property there in 1794 (Frederick County, Virginia Deed Book 24A, pg 231). Anthony Pitman wrote a will, 3 Dec 1802, naming his wife Catherine and his five children as heirs. He signed in German script "Antonius Bittman" and named his brother, Philip Pitman, as his executor. The will was probated, 3 Apr 1803 (Frederick County, Virginia Will Boo k 7, pg 106) Anthony Pitman is buried in the old graveyard at Stephens City and a handmade sandstone marker still stands at his grave. General Notes: When Philip Pitman arrived in America he apparently went straight to Virginia to join his bro thers. He married in Virginia about 1770 and in Sep 1771 obtained a survey warrant for 310 ac res of land east of Strasburg. He assigned that to Abraham Kendrick and instead purchased 12 7 acres from Philip Baker, youngest son of his uncle, John Nicholas Baker (Shenandoah County , Virginia Deed Book A, pg 180-181) In 1774 he purchased another 259 acres from the remainin g heirs of John Nicholas Baker. This land was located near Little North Mountain about thre e miles west of Strasburg, Virginia. Philip eventually owned more than 500 acres on the headw aters of Mulberry run, near present day St. Stephens Church. Some of this land is still in po ssession of direct descendants. Philip and Susanna are buried in a graveyard on their homeste ad. Susanna's father, Christian Crabill was an early settler in the Strasburg area, first pur chasing land from Jacob Funk in 1742. Johann married Susanna Grabill, daughter of Christian Grabill and Unknown, about 1770 in Strasburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia. Susanna was born about 1745 and died on 1 Feb 1821 about age 76.

John Pittman and his family moved to Harrison Co, Indiana in 1809 and settled in Scott Townsh ip where he operated a ferry on the Ohio River.

Whereas I, John Pitman of the County of Harrison and State of Indiana have made and duly e xecuted my last will and testament in writing bearing date the second day of April in the yea r of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty five; and being desirous of changing som e parts of said will; I do hereby declare this present to be a codicil to my said last will a nd testament, and direct that it shall be annexed thereto and taken as part thereof. And I d o hereby ________so much of my last will as gives and devises unto my oldest son Lawrence Pit man and his heirs, the Southwest quarter of section eight in township four south and range th ree east of the second principal meridian, having by deed bearing even date herewith conveye d the same to him and his heirs and have taken his note bearing even date herewith for the p urchase money obtained for the sum of three hundred and twenty dollars and also hereby revok e so much of my last said will as gives and devises unto my son John Pitman and his heirs, th e Southeast quarter of section nine in township four South and in range three east of the sec ond principal meridian having by deed bearing even date herewith conveyed the said farm to hi m and his heirs and to secure the purchase money of which I have taken his note also bearin g even date herewith for the sum of three hundred and twenty dollars. An d I do hereby devise unto my son John Pitman and unto his heirs and assign forever the said l ast mentioned quarter section of land, to wit: the south west quarter of section thirty on e in township three south and range three east subject to the following conditions and consid eration, that is to say, he my said son John Pitman, shall keep and maintain me and wife Chri stiana during our joint lives and the survivor of us during his or her life according to th e time and effect of a certain indenture now existing between me and my said son John bearin g date the twenty fifth day of February in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred an d thirty five and in the manner herein described. And he shall also in consideration of sai d devise pay the executor the sum of six hundred dollars, four hundred of which shall be pai d on year after my death and after the death of my wife Christiana. When he shall have kept and maintained myself and my wife Christiana as above d irected and shall also have paid the aforesaid sum of six hundred dollars in the manner (desc ribed above) then his title to the said quarter section of land shall be complete to him an d to his heirs. It is also my will and I do hereby direct, that the aforesaid sum of sex hund red dollars when paid in the manner above directed shall be equally divided among my six chil dren to wit: Lawrence Pitman, John Pitman, David Pitman, Sarah Fleshman, Katharine Pitman an d Polly Lopp in such a manner as to equalize their several portions after paying the severa l legacies bequeathed by my said last will and testament and shall be directed to be paid b y this codicil. And I do hereby bequeath unto my son Isaac Pitman youngest child, that is t o say his youngest child at the date of this codicil (a son its name not being know) My exec utors to pay the same at the same times and in the same manner as they are directed to pay th e several legacies bequeathed by my last will to the other children of my son Isaac,

We have little knowledge of Lawrence Pitman's early youth or of the first ten years of his married life. In a deed of 1797, he is named as "Lawrence Pitman, farmer" but he appears to have entered into business operations, as well. In 1803, he and his wife sold to John Pitman two tracts of land in Shenandoah County, for $2,500.00 and August 8, 1803, he bought 287 acres of land "on the northwest side of the North River Shenandoah" from Abraham Bird and his wife, Rachel for $5, 555.50. Here Lawrence Pitman built, presumably in 1803-04, the brick mansion well know throughout the region as RED BANKS". Rebuilt and remodelled after a fire about a century later, it still stands near the highway, formerly the Valley Turnpike, and is one of the historic landmarks of the Valley. Red Banks was a favorite stopping place for traveling gentry between Baltimore and White Sulphur Springs. Miss Mary Pitman names Madame Jerome Bonaparte, General Andrew Jackson and (in Civil War days) General Stonewall Jackson as among those who were entertained there.

On the tombstone of Lawrence Pitman in the cemetery at Mt. Jackson, Virginia, is the inscript ion:

"Lawrence Pitman was born August 17, 1773, and departed this life October 19th, 1850 , aged 77 yrs, 11 mos, and 2 das"

Beside him sleeps his wife and her epitaph reads:

"Mrs Mary (Catherine) Pitman, consort of Lawrence Pitman and daughter of John and Susanna Will. She was born on 25th of December 1774, and departed this life on the 11th of November, 1832, aged 58 years, 11 mos, & 14 days."

Lawrence married Mary Catherine Will, daughter of Michael Will and Christina Maxel, in 1794. Mary was born on 25 Dec 1773 and died on 11 Nov 1832 at age 58.

General Notes: During the Revolutionary War Andrew Pitman served in the Virginia Militia from 1777 to 1781 a nd was at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered. He provided information on his term of servic e when he applied for a pension in 1832 at age 72. He provided no family information in his a pplication. Andrew bought and sold considerable real estate in Stephens City, Virginia in hi s lifetime but more precise information on him or his family has been difficult to obtain sin ce he left no will and no church records can be found for the family. He may have raised some of the chi ldren of his brother Andrew, particularly John M. Pitman with whom he had many business deali ngs. In fact John Pitman was killed by a train in Staunton, Virginia while visiting his nephe w, John M. Pitman (see Augusta County Death Register, 1855)

General Notes: Emanuel and Esther Pitman lived on a farm at Mt. Olive in Shenandoah County, Virginia. He wa s apparently a competent businessman and was often call upon to administer estates, lay off r oads and conduct business and civic affairs in the community. His son, Levi, who remained a t home, recorded considerable information on the family in hid diaries, including the fact th at when Emanuel Pitman died his descendants numbered 99. Esther's father, Christian Funkhouse r, who died in 1818, was the son of John Funkhouser Sr. an early pioneer in the Strasburg are a.

The farm eventually fell to his daughter, Elizabeth and her husband , Obed Hockman, and much of it still remains in the hands of descendants. Abraham Pitman help ed found the St. Stephens Lutheran Church in 1842 and agreed to furnish all the nails neede d to build a church (Registry of St. Stephens Church 1842-1900 at St. Paul's Lutheran Churc h in Strasburg, Virginia) The record of the appraisal and settlement of Abraham Pitman's esta te is in Shenandoah County, Virginia Will Book 12, pg 420. Levi Pitman mentions the family o f his uncle Abraham a number of times in his diary.

Abraham married Elizabeth Supinger on 23 May 1811. Elizabeth died on 11 Dec 1815.

John Lopp, the second child of Jacob and Mary Lopp, was born in Rowan County, N. Car., o n 11/6/1794. He came to Harrison county, Indiana with his parents in 1808, where on 8/5/181 8 he married Mary M. (Polly) Pitman., Polly was born in 1802, the daughter of John and Elizab eth Mauk Pitman, both of whom were born in Shenandoah county, Va., and the granddaughter of N icholas Pitman who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. They lived on a farm near Lopp's H ollow. John died 10/27/1846 and Mary 2/24/1872. Both are buried in the Beachwood cemetery. Th ey had five children; Philip, Isaac, Margaret, John, and Mary.

39. Isaac Noah Pitman was born in 1802 in Strasburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia, died after 1880 in Wea Twp, Miami County, Kansas, and was buried in Glenwilde Cemetery, Westline, Cass County, Missouri.

General Notes: Isaac Noah Pitman and Mary Grant had 1 daughter and 6 sons. Isaac Pitman migrated for less than 2 yrs to Knox County Illinois, returning by late 1837. As both he and wife Mary Grant signed the multiple grantor deed in Harrison County, Indiana in the settlement of the estate of George Grant. All of Isaacs children are to be found in the school enumerations of 1846 and 1847 in Harrison county, Indiana. The family migrated to Marion County Iowa in early 1848, recorded in History of Marion Co, Iowa. (1856 State census-1860 federal census) 1850 census of Eldorado County California shows Isaac and all of his family. Occupation of older males: Miner s. Family tradition says they returned home to Iowa by ship to the isthmus of Panama in 1852 , crossing the gulf of Mexico by ship to the port of New Orleans, where his oldest son and son-in-law died of cholera. Traveled by boat up the Mississippi river to Iowa where they remained until 1870, when Isaac and all except George and William migrated to Miami County, Kansas . In the name of God amen I Isaac Pittman of Harrison County Indiana being of sound mind, but in feeble health make publish and ordain this my last will and testament. First it is my wish and desire that my wife Mary Ann, and my children shall at and after my death, have the entire and unrestricted control of all my property both real and personal, and if there should a rise any disagreement or controversy among them concerning any property which I shall leave at the time of my death they shall select and appoint three or four (as they as a majority of them may prefer as a number) disinterested members to settle said disagreement or controversy and they all shall abide by said referees decision and if any one or more of my said heirs will not agree to the decision of said referees, then descending heir or heirs shall in no way inherit any portion of my property and I admonish my heirs, to love one another and live in peace, harmony and affection. Physical Description
This house has been rebuilt in part; the old part has some unusually wide (10 inch) weatherboarding. The house stands back in a deeply shaded lawn of irregular old shrubbery and wild grass. A beaten narrow path leads from the road to the house.

Historical Significance
Levi Pitman was a clock smith, and it is said that he had the whole upstairs filled with clocks. He was a Northern sympathizer, and had a trap door in the floor where he would go down to hide under the house. This was not in the cellar but about three feet under the floor where he always hid when the Southern Army came too near.
Miss (Mattie) Borden tells that her grandmother, Mrs. Levi Pitman, baked bread for the soldiers while they camped across the road from this home; on one occasion they grabbed it from the oven half baked and ran, with the opposing army in pursuit.

Obituary
Died at his late residence in Harrison county, Indiana, at 11 o'clock and 4 minutes a.m., on the 19th day of October 1876, Peter Hottell, Esq. The deceased was a well known and prominent citizen of Harrison county. He was born in Shenandoah county, Virginia, on the 20th day of July 1817, and was in his 60th year at his death. When a boy, he emigrated with his father, the late Conrad Hottell, to this county. Mr. Hottell, the subject of this notice, was three times married, was the father of nine children, seven of whom survive him, five sons and two daughters.

Mrs Elizabeth Pitman

Mrs Elizabeth Pitman, died at Nehawka, Nebraska, March 12th. In the death of Mrs. Andre w Pitman Sunday afternoon, the community lost a good woman and the family a faithful wife an d mother. Mrs Pitman had been sick for several weeks with an attack of lagrippe and other com plications incident to her extreme age and for a week before she died it was seen there was n o hope for her. The deceased, formerly Miss Elizabeth Conrad, was born in Harrison county, In diana, May 19 1832. To this union six children were born-four sons and two daughters. Two o f the boys, Thomas of Avoca, and Charles of Vannago, Nebraska and one girl, Miss Hattie, toge ther with the aged husband surviving her. Three of the children preceded her to the Better La nd. The family moved to Nebraska in 1876 and located on a farm near Mt. Pleasant and shortl y after the town of Nehawka was started they moved there where they have resided ever since b eing prominently identified with the upbuilding of the social and church life of the town. M r Pitman united with the United Brethren over sixty-five years ago and lived a faithful and c onsistent christian life. Her only sister, Mrs. B.F. McCowan, of St Joe, Illinois, the only s urviving sister and one brother Henry Conrad, living in Independence, Kansas, and her two son s and daughter were with her when she died. Her death came painlessly after several days of u nconsciousness. It seemed as if she fell asleep. The funeral services were held in the U .B. church, Tuesday afternoon. Rev Davis of Elmwood, preached the sermon to a large number o f the friends who gathered to pay their last respects as a tribute to a long life of usefulne ss of this christian woman. The burial was the cemetery north of town where two of her childr en lie. The aged husband and sorrowing family have the sympathy of this community. JOHN W. PITMAN, farmer, P.O. Factoryville, was born in Harrison County, Indiana, March, 1884 , and was employed in the mercantile business there for several years. In 1855, he removed t o Weston, Marion Co., Iowa, and was for about four years engaged in the mercantile business . He came to Nebraska, May 28, 1859 preempted 120 acres in Mount Pleasant Precinct and far med for a year after which he went to Nebraska City and followed freighting across the plain s. In 1871 he returned to Cass County and has since resided in Liberty Precinct. He owns 32 0 acres of land and is largely engaged in raising stock. Mr Pitman was married at Pleasantvil le, Marion Co, Iowa January 29th 1857 to Lydia Goodwin. They have seven Children-Relia A, Mel issa J, Hattie, Charles L, James, Edward A, Birdie D. Elizabeth Pitman (Mrs Elizabeth Fravel) was born in Carden, (should read Corydon) Indiana on Oct. 10, 1838 and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs A. E. Kennard (Jenny), 223 First Street, Albert Lea, Minnesota, June 19, 1929, at the age of 90 years 8 months, and 8 days.
She was married to William Fravel Sept. 4, 1858 and to this union was born four boys and two girls, all living. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Although the last year she was unable to go out she had many dear friends that enjoyed calling on her in her home, and of which she looked forward to with much comfort. Funeral services were held from the Bonnerup funeral home Thursday afternoon and from there the body was sent to Ashland, Neb. for burial in the family lot.

OLD ASHLAND RESIDENT BURIED HERE FRIDAY
The body of Mrs Elizabeth Fravil was brought to Ashland for burial Friday, June 21. She passed away at the home of her daughter at Albert Lea, Minn, Mrs Fravil formerly lived in this city and had many friends here. She was 91 years of age at the time of her death.
Elizabeth Pittman was born in Carden (should read Corydon) Ind, Oct 10th 1838. On Sept 4th, 1858, she was married to William Fravil, to which union were born six children, two sisters and four sons, all of whom are still living.
The early part of her life was spent in Indiana, while the latter part was passed in Nebraska, the last years of her life having been spent at the homes of her daughters. At the time of her death she was living with her daughter, Mrs Jennie Kennard of Albert Lea, Minn., where she had been failing in health for several years, although bedfast only three weeks.
Mrs. Fravil leaves to mourn her departure, six children, sixteen grandchildren, and twenty -nine great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. Those present at the Ashland Cemetery, where the body was committed to its final resting place by Rev. Leo L. Duerson, Friday evening, were Mrs and Mrs T.H. Carroll, Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. T.O. Carroll, Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Hohnbaum, Mrs. A.J. Hohnbaum, Mrs. and Mrs. Wallelnden, Mr, and Mrs. L. D. Fravil, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Lyle and daughter Delta, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. William H. Fravel, Knox county's oldest resident, passed away Thursday morning in the family home, 928 North Fifth street, at 3:50 O'clock at the age of 103 years, 8 months and 13 days. The end was not expected. Since Saturday evening, when Mr. Fravel retired at an earlier hour than was his custom, he had been confined to his bed, but was believed to be suffering only from a bilious attack. His condition at no time was regarded as serious, and the news of his death Thursday morning was a surprise and a shock to his scores of friends in Vincennes. Funeral services will be conducted from the residence Sunday afternoon at 1:30 O'clock and interment in the Oaktown cemetery. Mr Fravel had been a resident of Knox county for the past 41 years. He was born March 27, 1822, near Corydon, Ind. He came to Knox county in 1884, settling on a farm near Emison Station. It wasn't a station then-just a vast area of timber and farm land practicallly uninhabited. He resided there for a number of years, finding plenty to do, and enjoyed the work. During his long life he engaged in various lines of work, but his principal vocations were farming, following the carpenter's trade, black smithing and operating a sawmill. He was known practically all over the county by men who visited his mills and contracted with him for sawing up lumber from timbers on their farms . Mr. Fravel was twice married, and has a son surviving by his first wife-Charles Fravel , now more than 79 years of age. The following children from his first wife; Charles, born in 1848; Ida and Jennie, of Nebraska; Mack, of Iowa, and Lewis, of Nebraska. The second marriage of Mr. Fravel was to Elizabeth Crawford, and occurred in 1870-56 years ago. Five children were born to this union. They are Alvin, deceased; Hampton, living near Emison; Harriet Loveless, deceased, and James and Otto Fravel of Vincennes. Mr. Fravel voted for every President since James K. Polk, and while he never aspired to political office, always took an active part in politics, never missing an opportunity to go to the polls to vote for his candidate. On March 27, 1923, Mr. Fravel celebrated his 101st birthday anniversary, surrounded by members of his family, the Mothers of Battery E, 150th field artillery, in honor of his grandson, W. Scott Orndorff, who was a member of Battery E, and was twice wounded in action in France during the World War, a piece of shrapnel striking him in the back inflicting a wound that kept him in the hospital for several months. He was also severely gassed. Mr . Fravel during his entire life had never suffered a day of illness. But once in that long span of life-21 years ago-he was confined to his bed several days as the result of a broken leg . He was active until the last and took keen enjoyment in long walks, walking frequently to his old home place near Emison. Last summer he walked out into the country several times to pick blackberries. His eye-sight was good, and he could read a newspaper without the aid of glasses. Asked on numerous occasions for the recipe for his longevity of life, Mr. Fravel would answer: "Plenty of hard work and no worry. Worry is what shortens life." He never drank intoxicating liquor, and never used tobacco in any form. General Notes: ELI J. PITTMAN. Among the substantial and enterprising agriculturists of Cass County, o f whom brief biographical notices are given in this volume, no one is more worthy of mentio n than the subject of this biographical sketch. He has an extensive farm, consisting of 200 a cres on section 9, and 160 acres more on section 16, Liberty Precinct, which he bought in 187 2, and moved onto November 28 of that year. It was then but slightly improved, but by hard la bor and skillful management it has been transformed from the wild, unbroken prairie to a veri table garden spot, blossoming and yielding abundantly of the numerous cereals entrusted to it s soil. On this homestead, which lies on section 9, Mr Pittman has erected a handsome dwellin g, which is one of the most commodious and conveniently arranged in the precinct, it being we ll heated and ventilated, and with water carried throughout the house. The barn and other far m buildings are also of modern construction and in keeping with the dwelling, water for the s tock being carried by means of pipes and a windmill pump to the barn and feed lots. The hous e is situated on a rising knoll, and commands an extensive view of the surrounding country, N ebraska City, seventeen miles distant, being often clearly perceptible. Hardly such another f ine natural location can be found in Cass County, and Mr. Pittman has taken advantage of al l the facilities for improving and beautifying his homestead. Besides general farming our sub ject is much interested in stock-raising, and has large herds of fine cattle and many good ho rses. He is a member of the Factoryville Stock Company, which was formed in 1887, with ten ch arter members, for the purpose of introducing the English Shire draught horses into the count ry, making a specialty of that breed. The head of that herd, Young Samson, was sired in Engla nd, and imported by O.O. Heffner, of Nebraska City. He is a fine specimen of that stock, bein g coal black in color, about five years of age, and weighs upward of 1, 700 pounds. Th e subject of our sketch was born in Harrison County, Ind., Mar 9, 1845, and is the youngest c hild of the second marriage of David Pittman. The maiden name of the mother of our subject wa s Mary E. Young. She was a native of North Carolina, and her husband of Virginia. After thei r marriage they lived many years in Indiana, but subsequently moved to Nebraska, and died a t the home of our subject in Liberty Precinct, the father dying June 23, 1881, aged seventy-f our years, one month and seventeen days, and the mother Dec 26, 1881, at the age of seventy-f our years. He was a Democrat in his political views, and a Communicant of the Cumberland Pres byterian Church, while Mrs. Pittman held to the faith of the United Brethren Church. E.J . Pittman, of our sketch, was reared in his native county, and in early life became familiarl y acquainted with the duties evolving upon the son of a farmer. When the time came for him t o decide upon the way in which he should earn his livelihood, he concluded to become a tille r of the soil, and therefore purchased a farm in his native State. Before settling on it he w as united in marriage, in Harrison County, Ind., Oct. 30, 1886, to Miss Anna McBride. She wa s also a native of Harrison County, born April 12, 1849, and is the second daughter and thir d child born to George W. and Eliza (McCoy) McBride who were natives respectively of Tennesse e and Indiana. Mr. and Mrs. McBride began their wedded life on his farm in Harrison County, a nd there she died while yet in the prime of life, leaving three sons and two daughters, Mrs . Pittman being at that time five years old. Her father married for his second wife Adeline N eely, of Indiana, and they continued living in that State until the spring of 1888, when the y came to Nebraska and settled on the farm in Liberty Precinct which they still occupy. Mr. M cBride is an active man of fifty-six years, while his wife is twelve years younger. Both ar e consistent members of the United Brethren Church. The paternal grandfather of Mrs. Pittman , Edward McBride, was a native of North Carolina, of Scotch descent, as indicated by the name . he died in Indiana, past fourscore years of age. The maternal grandfather of Mrs. Pittman , John McCoy, was born and reared in Pennsylvania, but after his marriage located on a farm i n Indiana, where he spent his last years. Mrs Pittman was reared on a farm, receiving a goo d common-school education, and instructions in domestic duties that have rendered her an inv aluable help to her husband in the building up of their beautiful home. She is one of those w omen of whom we can truly say the heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, and her chil dren rise up and call her blessed. To our subject and his wife have been born two children-Be njamin Wallace and John W. The former, who has attained his majority, was well educated in Ne braska City College, and is now at home. John W. also attended school at Nebraska City. Mrs P ittman is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr Pittman affiliates with the Demo cratic party, which finds in him one of its most earnest and intelligent supporters. Mrs. Ann Pittman

Ann McBride Pittman was born on April 12, 1849, at Corydon, Ind, and died at York, Nebr. , on June 9, 1943, at the age of 94 years, one month and 27 days. She was one of a famil y of 11 children, all of whom have preceded her in death. She was married to Eli J. Pittman a t Corydon, Ind., on Nov 30, 1886. To this union, two sons were born, Walter B., and John W . When she was 16 years of age, Mrs. Pittman united with the Presbyterian church, of whi ch she remained a member until the end of her life. On Nov. 18, 1873, Mr and Mrs. Pittma n moved from Indiana to Cass county, Nebraska, where they lived until August, 1896, when the y came to York county where she has since made her home. Mr. Pittman preceded her in death i n November 1920. "Grandma" Pittman, as she was known to all her friends, will long be remembe red. Her experience and remembrance of the Civil War and the early days was most interesting . She was always of a sunny and cheerful disposition, ready and willing to help others as lon g as she was able. She was a faithful member of the church and took a great interest in the W .C.T.U. and the Rebekah lodge of which she was a member. She leaves to mourn her loss, t wo sons, Walter B., and John W., and Mrs John W. Pittman, all of York, with whom she made he r home; two grand-daughters, Mrs. C.A. Hansen and Mrs. Irvin Fickes; Three great grandchildre n and two great, great grandchildren, all of York, and a number of other relatives and a hos t of friends. Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian church of York on Sunday a fternoon, June 13, at 2:30 O'clock. Rev William J. Hage conducted the services. Interment wa s in Greenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Susan C. (Pitman) Rutherford aged 82 years a highly respected and beloved lady, die d at the home of her son, Mr John Rutherford, near Berryville, last Monday morning. Mrs. Rutherford had been very infirm for a long time and her death was not unexpected.
Mrs. Rutherford was a native of Shenandoah County and married Mr. Rutherford February 10 , 1842. Mr. Rutherford's death occurred July 4, 1897.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs Laura Keeler of Frederick County; Mr J.C .McIntyre, of Eldorado, Kansas and Miss Minnie Rutherford of Richmond, Va, and five sons, John of Clark County; and Messrs. James P.; William R.; T. Ashby; and Arthur H., of Butler County, Kansas .
The funeral was held from the house this morning at ten o'clock, Rev D.H. Scanlon, of the Berryville Presbyterian Church, officiating after which the remains were taken to Winchester by Undertaker Ender, and interment was in Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Mrs. J.W. Rutherford of Lake View, West Virginia died Monday, August 8, (1904). She was a former resident here (Butler County, Kansas) and has one daughter, Mrs. B.F. McIntire of Eldorando, three sons, W.R., J.P., and A.H. Rutherford of Augusta Township live here, one son also lives in the old home. Mrs Rutherford has many friends and acquaintances here who will regret her demise. Mrs. McIntire was with her when she died and will return about September 1st.

130. John L Pitman was born in 1825, died in 1893 in Washington, D.C. at age 68, and was buried in Mt. Jackson, Shenandoah County, Virginia.

General Notes: CAPTAIN J. L. PITMAN IS DEAD

Last monday, about three o'clock PM., Capt. John L. Pitman died in Washington D.C., whithe r he had gone in quest of health. He was a kind husband, successful business man. He had accu mulated large property, was honest in hid dealing. The Sentinel will miss his wise council an d his smile of approval.
About the first work he did away from home when a you man was in connection with the build ing of the railroad from Strasburg to Mt. Jackson and when the cars were put on the track h e was made depot agent at Strasburg. When the road was completed to Woodstock he was transfer red to that place where he remained until the road was extended to Mt. Jackson when he was a gain put in charge of the terminal station by being moved to that place.
He remained in charge of the depot there until the breaking out of the war, when he joine d the Mt. Jackson Company, 22nd Virginia regiment, Stonewall brigade as a Lieutenant, but soo n promoted to the Captaincy of his company and at the close of hostilities he returned to thi s his native country and locating with his father in law, the late William Ripley on the Re d Banks farm, he began the pursuit of agriculture and was thus continuously engaged until hi s death and in this business he made the bulk of his large property.
He was twice married and leaves a widow, one brother and two sisters. He was buried last W ednesday, from the Methodist Church in Mt. Jackson by pastor Rev. P.D. Stephensson of Woodsto ck in the presence of relatives and friends. His age was 68 years and 16 days.

John married Mary Jane Ripley, daughter of William Ripley and Elizabeth, on 20 Sep 1860 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Mary was buried in Mt. Jackson, Shenandoah County, Virginia.

John next married Mary Elizabeth Ripley, daughter of John J Allen and Frances, on 26 Oct 1875 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.

Laura married Robert Snapp on 27 Dec 1855 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Robert was born about 1835.

Mrs Viola L. Pitman Gold passed away at the home of her son Phillip Gold, in Winchester Tu esday 4th. aged about eighty two years. Funeral services were conducted the following Thursda y afternoon by Rev. J.H.Lacey, D.D., Rev. Mr. Kennison, and Rev. Mr Gilkerson and intermen t was made in the family lot in Mt. Hebron Cemetery. Four sons, three daughters, and her bro ther, Ardchibald H. Pitman of Mt. Jackson survive her.
Mrs. Gold was born within sight of Edenburg , at Palmyra , March 27, 1837, and was one o f three attractive daughters of Philip Pitman, who represented Page and Shenandoah Countie s in the State Senate from 1846 to 1861. It was mainly through his influence that the railr oad was built through the valley. (It was known as the Manassas Gap Railroad). Her father wa s a veteran of the War of 1812. In April 1867, Viola Pitman was married to William Henry Gol d of Frederick County.
Mrs. Gold was a granddaughter of Lawrence Pitman who Built Red Banks. Her mother, Fannie H ouston Pitman was a first cousin of the famous General Sam Houston; and Mrs Gold vividly reca lled his visit to his Virginia relatives.
Her nephew, Edward A. Snapp and family reside on the old homestead, the former old colonia l house is no more but some of our oldest inhabitants remember it. In an old Woodstock pape r was found recently the account of the marriage of her father and mother, over one hundred y ears ago.
Her brother, John L. Pitman was one of a number of men who made the advent of the Edinbur g Sentinel possible about twenty five years ago.
Mrs Gold had lived through four wars, three of which she saw settled, and her interest i n the recent great war manifested itself in practical ways. But the greatest interest in he r life was the case of God everywhere, and her mind, her heart, her prayers, and her purse we re all for the advancement of His Kingdom, who we believe has said to her "Well done, good an d faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of the Lord." Her mother "Fannie" mentioned here was Mary Houston, the daughter of Captain George Houston o f Revolutionary War. He was the brother of Sam Houston of Texas.

Her two sisters, then, were Susan C. Rutherford (wife of James) and Emma, wife of Elisha Payn e, and another sister was Laura who married first, Robert Snapp and second a Mr. Huffman. (Se e Pitman genealogy of family of Philip Pitman) Her brothers, John L., Archibald and Nathan w ho died young.

General Notes: When Benjamin Borden Jr. and Amanda Pitman were married, Amanda's father, Joseph Pitman, gav e the couple acreage worth $2000. That was supposedly $1,000 more than the other children ha d received, so Benjamin Jr. and Amanda paid Joseph Pitman $1,000 for the land. Benjamin Jr. b uilt a lovely home and barn for his family on this land. The barn was still standing in Jul y 1976, but the house had nearly been destroyed, except for the fireplace, which was still st anding. Trees that were very old and huge stood in the yard that has now been taken back by n ature. All seven of Benjamin and Amanda Borden's children were born and raised in this farm h ouse.

NEHAWKA (Special) - Hattie May Pittman was born to Andrew and Elizabeth Pittman in Coryd on, Ind., Harrison county, the youngest of six children, four boys and two girls, all of who m are deceased. She was born Jan 31, 1872, in 1876, her parents and the family bought the far m now known as the Adolph Ross farm in the Mount Pleasant community. They had the post offic e in their home before Nehawka was built. They later moved to Nehawka in 1889. She was marrie d to Joshua Sutphin of Radford, Va., in Lincoln Nebr., in 1912. To this union was born one so n, Barton. Her husband passed away July 15th 1931. Mrs Sutphin joined the United Brethre n Church in Nehawka when it was first built. She was a faithful and active member and attende d services regularly until she became ill. She was an official member at her death and serve d as pianist until recently. She was a charter member of the U.B. Aid Society and always acti ve in its work and was a member of the Royal Neighbors lodge. She passed away July 18, 1954 , at the age of 82 years, five months and eighteen days. She is survived by her son, Barton ; five living nephews and eight living nieces, besides other distant relatives and a host o f friends. Services were held at the E.U.B. church July 22, 1954. The Rev. A.B. Small , a former pastor, who is now a retired minister. Interment was at Mt Pleasant cemetery nea r Nehawka. Mrs, James Eastridge sang "We are going down the valley" and "Beyond the suns et" and was accompanied by Mrs. G.W. Weik. Pallbearers were Clifford Trotter, Frank Lemo n, Carl Wessel, Alvin McReynolds, Forrest Cunningham and I.A. Warlick. Relatives from out o f town were from Avoca, Murray, Plattsmouth, Omaha, and Council Bluffs, Iowa.(newspaper unkno wn)

"Isaac Frevel and his sons Henry & Moses came in 1750. Henry lived and died near Woodstock, Virginia. Isaac died in Rapahannock, County, Virginia and Moses went to Pennsylvania. Descendants of Henry are scattered all over the U.S. and so are those of Moses though not so numerous and some changed the spelling to Frable." (Note: In the above letter spelling of Fravel is Frevel)

Mrs. Conley's Mother Dies in Selah Home

Mrs. John (Lillie) Fravel, 75, mother of Mrs. C.A. Conley of Selah, died in Mrs. Conley's home early Wednesday Morning.
Mrs. Fravel had made the trip to Selah with Mr. and Mrs. Conley after they visited her in her home in Oakland, Calif., in July. She had been ill but for a short time.
In the family are Mrs. Conley and her sisters and brothers, Ray, Oria and Mrs. Mable Lyons, all of Oakland; C.W. Fravel of Ukiah, Calif.; and Glen Fravel of Portland.

OBITUARY

FRAVEL-- Mrs Lillie Mae Fravel who had been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Alta Conley of Selah , for the past six weeks, was taken ill yesterday and died early this morning in the St. Elizabeth hospital. Her home was at Oakland, Cal. Besides Mrs. Conley, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Lyons and for sons, Oria and Raymond all of Oakland, Glen Fravel of Portland , Ore., and Charles Fravel of Ukiah, Cal. Her sister, Mrs. Mamie Lumpkin, lives at Oakland and a brother Jess Carroll lives in Nebraska. There are 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Shaw & Sons is in charge of funeral arrangements. Newspaper and date unknown.

Ashes are in the same urn as husband John Henry Fravel.

Miss Blanche E. Borden, 92, Eastgate Manor Nursing Home, Washington, Indiana, died last Wednesday, 11:50 p.m. A Harrison County native, she was a former teacher in the Spencer Township Schools and was also a stenographer in Indianapolis. She was a member of Robert Park United Methodist Church, Indianapolis.
Survivor is a sister, Mrs. Lelah Louden, Depauw. The funeral was held Saturday, 2 p.m. at Swarens Funeral Home, Ramsey, with Rev. William G. Arnold officiating. Mrs. David Moore was vocalist accompanied by Mrs. Claude Flock, organist. Pallbearers were Arnold French, Howard Sibert, Oliver Rothrock, Eli Routh, Lowell Sibert and William Leffler.
Burial was in Pitman Cemetery, Depauw. Miss Borden was the daughter of the late Benjamin Jr. and Amanda Pitman Borden.

Bertha M. Fravel, Administratrix, now shows that her final report was filed in the office of the clerk of this court on June 24, 1953 and set for hearing on the 21st day of July 195 3, and that notice of final hearing and settlement was published in the Vincennes Sun-Commercial on the 25th day of June and the 2nd day of July, 1953, as shown by the affidavit of Howard N. Greenlee, Manager. Final report alleges that the sole assets consisted of a going business known as Louie's Radio Sales & Service of Vincennes, Indiana having a net value of $300.00 and that same was taken by Bertha M. Fravel, widow, as part of her widow's salutary allowance and that she assumed as part of the consideration thereof all debts and liabilities of said concern with the consent of the major creditors. It appears further and the court finds that said widow individually, as the operator of said concern has paid all gross income tax due the State of Indiana and that no gross income tax is due from this estate. Final report is approved and the court finds further that the estate is not subject to the Employment Security Act of Indiana. There remaining no further assets and nothing for distribution herein, the Administratrix is hereby discharged, her bond as such released and the estate closed.

Mable L. Lyons, 93, of Yakima died Tuesday in the Chalet nursing Home.
Born June 14, 1891, Greenwood, Neb., to John and Lilly (Carroll) Fravel, she was raised an d educated in Nebraska. She and Winfred Lyons were married on June 14, 1910.
They moved to California in 1930. Mr Lyons died in 1968 and she moved to Yakima in 1969.
Mrs Lyons was a member of the Selah Church of Christ.

The Jones family had picked her up from the orphanage to be a playmate to their own daughter during summer vacation. When they took her back she begged them to let her stay with them. Mrs Jones wanted her but her husband was skeptical. She ran away and found them. She thought she was between 3-5 years old when she was taken to the orphanage. In her Bible it says that she married Oria Fravel in Lincoln, Nebraska on 14 August 1916 by Reverend Shepard. It was witnessed by Frank Fravel and Grace Fravel.

ALTA L. CONLEY

YAKIMA - Alta L. Conley went home to the loving arms of her Lord, Thursday January 25, 2001 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Alta was born in Gypsum, Colorado, August 19, 1906 to John H. and Lilly M. (Carroll) Fravel and moved to Washington when she was a young girl. She married Clyde on February 16, 1929 in Seattle, and moved back to the Yakima area in 1933. Alta was a very loving mother and friend. She was "Grandma Alta" to every child she met. Alta raised her family in Selah and was a long time, active member of the Christian Church of Selah.
Alta's survivors include her daughter Shirley Reyna, and husband Eli, of Yakima; son Don and his wife Scharmal, of Kennewick; nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Alta was preceded in death by her husband Clyde, and her parents, five brothers and one sister.
Graveside services will be Monday January 29, 2001 at 2:00 pm at West Hills Memorial Park. Visitation can be made Sunday from noon to 1 pm . Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors are entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the New Hope Christian Church building fund care of Shaw and Sons.

Clyde Conley said at age 4 or 5 he mentioned there were raisins in the gravy (flys) he was sent outside.

Clyde Albert Conley went to Selah Washington in 1934 where he worked in the West Dependable Grocery store and after that in the Hardware store. During WW II, he managed a grocery store for Robert Lince (Jim's Market) while Robert Lince was in the war. Clyde later owned a grocery of his own, Clyde's Market, in Selah Washington, which Robert Lince purchased from Clyde several years later.

Clyde was Selah City Clerk for a number of years and served on the Selah City Council from 1953 to 1972. Clyde also served on the Selah Chamber of Commerce and was president of that organization in the late 1930's. Clyde started the Chamber's Crab Feed in 1936 and it is still (1996) an annual event. Clyde served on the Fire District Board as secretary for several years and served on the Yakima Valley Fire District Board.

Clyde was Treasurer of his church, Selah Church of Christ. Clyde was also active in the Selah Lions Club and held almost every office in the organization, including president thru out the years.

Clyde and wife Alta Fravel Conley and baby daughter, Shirley, lived with Lora and Erwin Knowles on their ranch near Benton City, Washington in 1933. He worked for board & room, living in the 1 room cabin that Phillip Bachler had lived in years earlier, and at the same time rode a horse to Whitstrand, Washington and worked on the Deshayne Ranch for 50 cents a day.

We have a copy of Clyde Albert Conley's discharge from the National Guard, dated 10 November 1928. His address at the time was 7344 31st SW, Seattle, Washington.

We have a copy of a "Promotion Certificate" from the primary department to the Junior department of the First Christian Church, Waitsburg, Washington, dated 26 September 1915. (The church is still there in 1994)

CONLEY RETIRES FROM FIRE DISTRICT #2

It is very frequently the people behind the scenes, those that just keep things moving , are the silent majority that really gets things done, quietly and with persistence. Clyde Conley is one of those people. Clyde Conley retired from the position of Secretary of Fire District #2, Dec. 31, 1990, but his actual retirement date was February of 1989. On the date of his retirement in February of 1989, he was asked to stay on for the sake of continuity, so he did. Upon his retirement, he had spent 34 years as the secretary of Fire District #2. While doing this public Job, Conley was also serving as secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. During his tenure, Conley had to prepare minutes of each meeting and see to it that copies of the minutes went to each of the three fire commissioners, a job that entailed a large amount of detail and bookkeeping. Conley also had to keep fire commissioners informed of previous matters that would have an influence on the decisions that they were making. He was responsible for having the paperwork and accounting ready for auditors and he also had to be aware of annexations and annexation policies and how they would affect the workings of the fire district Fire Chief, John Soden, recalls that Conley never missed a meeting. "He was always attentive, and kept good minutes," Soden said. "He showed a definite concern and interest for the people of Fire District #2." Throughout Conley's time as the secretary, fire district grew . It was incorporated with the City of Selah on Sept 26, 1966, and later incorporations included East Selah, Lower Wenas and Upper Wenas. Each time a new area of responsibility was added , Conley's responsibilities grew. Conley had to be aware of the various types of roads and whether access of specific types of fire fighting vehicles would be possible. All problems had to be anticipated. When Conley started as the secretary, the three fire commissioners were Axel Samuelson, Ed Brown and William Dowdy. Clyde Conley is now (1991) 85 years old, and can, at last, turn the wheel over to someone else. Carl North, firefighter and high-school teacher, is the new secretary of Fire District #2. GETS BEAR STORY OUT OF DEER HUNT

Clyde Conley shot a nice two-point buck far up in the Wenas on Sunday and he almost got a bear in what he terms the hard way, The bear, probably frightened by hunters, came tearing down the ridge on which Clyde was walking. There was not much room to pass so Clyde let out a husky yell and the bear swerved to the side. About that time Larry Tyrrell got in a good shot and bruin rolled to the bottom of the small canyon and two more shots failed to stop him. Clyde sheepishly reported that Bobby Dubuque, who was in the party, also ran. (Selah news paper, sometime in the 1940's)

CLYDE ALBERT CONLEY

Clyde Albert Conley, 91, Selah, Wa., died Monday June 23, 1997 at Selah Convalescent Center. He was born June 7, 1906 in Lincoln, Nebraska to James Albert Conley and Clara May (Burkhart) Conley. When Clyde was 6 years old, the family moved to Waitsburg, Wa. and then when 12 years old moved to Prosser, Wa. At age 18 he moved to Puyallup, Wa. where his mother died. Clyde graduated from high school in Puyallup, Wa. in 1925.
Clyde sought out and found Alta Fravel that he had met in Prosser, Wa. when he was 12 years old. Clyde Conley and Alta Fravel were married in Seattle, Wa. February 16, 1929 and lived in Seattle, Wa. a short time before moving to the Prosser and Benton City area. While in Prosser, Wa., their first child was born on June 26, 1931, Shirley Anne. Clyde and Alta moved to Yakima, Wa., in 1934, where their second child was born on April 29, 1934, Donald Richard . Clyde and Alta and family moved to Selah, Wa. shortly after the birth of their son in 1934 and have lived there ever since.
In Selah Clyde managed the West Dependable Grocery Store and then worked in the hardware store. During WWII Clyde managed Jim's Market for Robert Lince and later owned Clyde's Market. He was also a bookkeeper and dispatcher for McPherson Trucking.
Clyde was actively involved in his community. He was City Clerk for a number of years, served on the City Council for 19 years. He was on the Selah Chamber of Commerce, including the office of president in the late 1930's. He started the Chamber's Crab Feed in 1936 which is still an annual event. For his 34 years of service as secretary on the Fire District Board , a meeting room at the new fire station was named in his honor. He was an active member of the Selah Lions Club, holding every office including president. Clyde was a beloved member of the Christian Church at Selah serving there as an elder and treasurer.
Clyde is survived by his wife of 68 years Alta Conley of Selah; Daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Eli Reyna of East Selah, Wa., son and daughter-in-law, Don and Scharmal Conley of Kennewick, Wa., 2 nieces Abbie Shaw and Mary Lou Foresman, 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and many grandnieces and grandnephews, and he was affectionately called "Grandpa Clyde" by many, many other children who adopted him as their own.
Clyde Conley was buried June 25, 1997 at West Hills Memorial Park, Yakima, Wa., Shaw and Sons Funeral Home in charge.
