General Notes: The Worley family had been Quaker for many years, but David was a Methodist circuit rider. He was ordained while living in Grundy, (Now Mercer) County, Missouri between 1838 and 1852. The family moved to Madison County, Iowa, near Winterset. They also lived at Keokuk, Iowa for a short time; Cass County, Nebraska, south of Plattsmouth, about 1856 to 1863; and from 1863 until there deaths, David and Elizabeth moved in Franklin County, Kansas. On the journey into Kansas, they stopped and camped when they heard of Wiliam Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, Kansas, 21 Aug 1863.

David's estate was never fully settled until after Elizabeth's death. She lived out her last years in the home of her daughter Sarah.

In the household with George and Rachel are Effie, 17, born KS; Edwin, 10, born NE; Pattie, 8, born NE; and James Chalfant, 75, born VA. As there was no Pattie in the 1880 listing, it seems likely that this is Kittie and that the transcriptionist misread the entry.

The only witnesses were the pastor's family and Mrs Nellie Quinn and Miss Pearle Harshbarger. Mr Carroll and Mrs Jordan were childhood friends and went to school together. Mr Carroll came from Nebraska about 6 months ago and met Mrs Jordan for the first time in many years and they decided tho well advanced in years they would pass the remainder of their days together. The groom is about 71 and the bride 73. The new Mrs Carroll is a kindly woman and a general favorite and all wish them a long life of comfort and happiness. Ada Whitmore has on a record given to me that John Edward Carrell and Martha Long were married on 17 May 1840 in Andrew County, Missouri. I have the death certificate of their son Edward B Carroll that says he was born 18 May 1840 in Kentucky .

The following is a letter written to me from D'Rollin Carrell dated 4/25/1990 in response to my letter to him asking if he knew the maiden name of the first wife of Edward B Carroll and what the name of the person was doing the Carrell History. "Dear Don; Thank you so much for writing about your great grandfather I am enclosing some sheets of information that was taken from a family Bible that we found when Uncle Wilbur passed away. The niece who has done much research is: Beth Konshak, RR#1, Wembley,Alberta,Canada TOH350. Edward's 1st wife was: REBECCA FRANCIS GRAY. I do not know where she is buried, however, CECEL EVERETT, who lives in Bickleton should know, she is his aunt. Our daughter-in-law has done extreme research on the family tree, but has put it aside for a while. Would surely enjoy meeting you sometime. It is always great to find a missing link in the family chain. Yours truly, D R Carrell."

OBITUARY

Edward B Carrell

Edward B Carrell died suddenly in Bickleton, Monday, June 17th, of heart failure, aged 72 years. Mr. Carrell was taken ill a few weeks ago, caused probably by over-exertions, and apparently was slowly recovering his strength. Monday morning, he said, he was feeling better and made up his mind to walk down town, and see Dr. Brokman about signing some pension papers . He got as far as the hotel and stopped on the porch to rest. Mr. Emmet Wriston offered to go for Dr. Brockman, and have the papers signed there, but Mr Carrell thought if he had some liniment, he had been using for neuralgia, he would be better. Mr. Edmond Gleason procured this and went to call the Doctor. Before his return, Mr. Carrell quietly passed away in the chair. The body was taken to his home. The funeral took place at 11:00 O'clock Wednesday, the Rev C.W. Johnson conducting the services in the Methodist Church. The funeral was attended by a large number of friends and relatives of the deceased. Interment was in the Oddfellows Cemetery. Edward B. Carrell was born in Kentucky in 1840. In early life, he moved with his parents to Missouri, thense to Iowa, where he remained until 15 years old, later going to Nebraska. He was married in 1861 to Rebecca Gray, To this union, 14 children were born, six of whom with their mother are dead. Mr. Carrell enlisted in the army in 1864. He came to Bickleton a few years ago, and was married October 18, 1910 to Mrs Mary M. Jordan ( Worley).

General Notes: Enlisted March 1862 in the Missouri Militia; re-enlisted 25 March 1864 in 16th Kansas Cavalry. For this service in the Civil War, his mother was awarded a pension (Mother's Claim #129597) by the Department of Interior, $8.00 monthly to commence 16 April 1864. The pension stopped at her death in May 1895.

General Notes: Robert and Sarah cared for her mother during the last years of Elizabeth Shinkle Worley's life. Elizabeth probated papers show that Robert changed her estate for almost its complete total, despite earlier assurances to the family that he would not do so. He was reimbursed from the estate for Elizabeth's "under ware" and the remainder was divided among all the heirs. However, Robert and Sarah bought 74 acres owned by Elizabeth at the time of her death, making a down payment and arranging to pay the balance in installments which were apparently never paid. As the land was the main asset of the estate, Robert gained what he wanted, at little cost to himself, and this may be the real reason who no evidence has been found that he made good his threat to appeal the decision of the probate court. At the time of the 1910 census, Robert operated a hotel at Lane, Kansas.

One descendant states that Etta had such a bad reputation in his branch of the family that she was seldom mentioned, and then only in whispers. This was during his childhood and he never learned just what it was that Etta was supposed to have done. She could not have divorced John Spratt for she was living with him at the time of his death, the next year she was listed in a farm annual as a widow. There is not other evidence available. However, it may even be that Etta was never buried at Peoria. It is possible that the unknown scandal occurred during her second marriage and involves her second husband, Clarence Lang.

Edith Magelsen

Edith Magelsen was born March 17, 1914, in Bickleton to William Arthur Jordan and Loella Gertrude McMurray. She moved to Kennewick in 1934 and married her husband Earl A. Magelsen, Feb . 20, 1937. She died Dec. 31, 1993, at her home surrounded by her loving children and husband . Edith has enjoyed a full life as a wife, mother and grandmother. She has always been actively engaged in church service. She was a member of the Pasco Fourth Ward of the Church of Latter-day Saints until her death. Edith has been a great example to all. She is greatly loved and will be sorely missed by all. Edith is survived by her husband Earl at home. Children: Mrs . Leroy (Shirley) Welch of Burbank, James Magelsen and wife Colleen of Monroe, Tom Magelsen and wife Linda of Kennewick, Mill Magelsen and wife Linda of West Richland, Jons Magelsen and wife Becky of Cucamonga, Calif; Mrs Neil (Christy) Herd of Kennewick and Mrs Mike (Tammy) Robertson of Kennewick. Brothers and sister, Ralph Jordan of Portland, Ore., Arthur Jordan of Richland and Myrtle Rupp of Bickleton: 35 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Edith was preceded in death by her daughter, Geraldine Magelsen; brothers, Roy, Frank, Rollie; sisters, Loella Waggoner, Joy Donahue and Gertrude Jordan. Services will be Jan. 4, 1994, at the Pasco LDS Stake Center. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday, 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m . Interment will follow at Riverview Heights Cemetery in Kennewick.
