Another Pioneer Gone - Joseph P. Lane, an old pioneer of California and a well known and much respected citizen of this county died at his residence at Cottonwood on the 11th inst. He was native of Kentucky and emigrated to Missouri at an early age. In 1849 he came overland to California, settling in what is now Shasta County, in October of that year. He mined with success, in the vicinity at Middletown and Oregon Gulch for some seventeen years, and was one of the extremely few miners among the early settlers of California, who would never abandon a good claim, to roam over the country from place to place for thousands of miles a ending perhaps the last dollar in the vain hope of making a big strike. He was a man of good intellect - was affable, generous, and hospitable. No man ever greeted friends with more cordial hand or warmer heart than he. His death shrouds a wife with sorrow while a multitude of sympathising friends deplore his loss.
