John J. Wheelock
1835-1917
   John J. Wheelock was born in 1835 in the state of New York. At the age of 27, he moved from the east to California and settled in Muletown. He lived at Muletown for years, and in 1860, he married Miss Hannah Howell at Shasta City. Shortly after the wedding Mr. and Mrs. Wheelock moved to the settlement of Eagle Creek, which became Ono in 1883.
   Wheelock was one of the early merchants in Ono history, and he reared a large family. Wheelock farmed and he also did a little mining too, in the Sunny Hill district near Ono. John was a well respected man of Western Shasta, about 1913, the Wheelock's moved to Redding where he died in June of 1917, at his Placer Street home. His children grew up and married into other pioneer families of Shasta County.
