army and police career

1909 - he joined the 5th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade.

1912 - he was appointed a constable in the Metropolitan Police.

By July 1914 - he had transferred to special duty at Waltham Abbey.

In December 1914 - he rejoined the army, and was posted to the 18th Division

In France in March 1915.

(He married Emma immediately prior to going)

Further postings were 57th Division in April 1917 and 31st Division in March 1918,

He was demobbed at Shorncliffe in Jan. 1919, and the following month rejoined the Metropolitan Police and was posted to "N" division at Stoke Newington.

July 1922 - he passed the exam for Sergeant.

May 1925 - he was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to 1st Division at Woolwich Arsenal.

May 1925 - he obtained a discharge from the Army Reserve under Regulation Para 484 King's Regulations 1923.

September 1925 - he transferred to "P" Division on reorganisation.

August 1928 - he passed his exam for Station Sergeant and the following month transferred to "K" Division, Canning Town as Sergeant.

Jan. 1930 - Moved to Plaistow Station at his own request . By October he had passed the Inspector's exam, and in December was promoted to Inspector and transferred to "J" Division at Hackney Station.

By September 1934 - he had passed the selection board for Sub Divisional Inspector and was promoted to S.D. Inspector in Dec.1934 and transferred to "F" Division, Wallington Sub-Division.

July 1935 he reverted to Inspector(why?), and moved to Hammersmith Station.

He and Emma bought their first house at this point at 3, Burnham Way in August 1935.

Jan 1938 - he resigned on pension on completion of service from the Met.
