Benjamin and Elizabeth BRUCE
(née HAYHOW)

Benjamin BRUCE was born in Wereham to John and Hannah BRUCE in 1798.

He was Edward's brother and twin to Joseph.

In 1871, Benjamin was living in Downham workhouse. He died in the Sep qtr of 1874(FreeBMD),apparently aged 79 at death.

 Elizabeth HAYHOW was probably the daughter of Thomas and Maria HAYHOW. and sister of Ann.

They married in Newton in the Isle, Cambs on 20 Jan 1823.

Elizabeth died in 1843, and was buried in Wereham churchyard on 27th August.

Susannah bp. 7 Mar 1823 Wereham.I have no further information about her as yet.
Sarah bp. 1824 Married Thomas BRAZIER in Wereham on 13 Oct 1843 (witnesses were Benjamin BRUCE and Sarah WITTRICH). Sarah was buried in Cambridge on 25 Mar 1905. Their daughter Martha went on to marry her uncle John in 1872(see below). In 1881, they were living in Cambridge. Thomas died in Sep qtr 1891(FreeBMD). In 1901, Sarah(76) was still in Cambridge. She died in 1905 in Cambridge. Their son Robert married twice. His son Ernest, by his second wife, was b. in Cambridge in 1901.
Anna Maria bp. 7 May 1826. I have no further information about her as yet.
John bp.5 Oct 1828 Wereham, Married twice. Firstly to Harriet BALES,then to his niece Martha BRAZIER in 1872. Their son George(1882-1954 Wisbech) married Ada DOUGHTY in 1906. John died in 1896.

Ann Priscilla bp. 2 Oct 1831 Wereham. Married James RICHES in Wereham on 30 Nov 1850 (witnesses were John Fendick and Sarah Fendick). Living in Wereham in 1851.In 1861 they were living in Cambridge [with daughter Priscilla Elizth (aged 1) who died 2 yrs later], and in Chatham, Kent in 1871. In 1881, they were living in Daventry. Her daughter Annie Lavinia (b.1864, Cambridge) married John MITCHELL in Daventry in 1889. In 1891 they were all still in Daventry. In 1901, Ann (70) was living in Gateshead, along with son Arthur(& family). She died in Gateshead in 1903. Son Arthur did rather well for himself. He worked for a Plumbing Merchants in Newcastle, a company called Crosslings. He had married Emily MIDDLETON who came from Newnham in Northamptonshire. In 1911, his family were living in Gateshead. He started as a storeman but worked his way up to a managerial position and bought a lot of shares in the company. At the time of his death he owned properties in Daventry, Oakham and Gateshead.
Joseph

bp. 31 Aug 1834 Wereham. Married Eliza CUTTRISS (b Ely) in Ely on 3 Aug 1856.

Benjamin bp.2 Jan 1836 Wereham. Married Naomi Hitchcock on 16 Nov 1856 in Wereham. Click here for more about this family.
William b 1838. The youngest, stayed with his father Benjamin after his mother died, not marrying until 1886 in Wereham, 12 years after his father's death. He married Jane Matthews on 16 Oct 1886. They had no children. Jane died in Wereham on 4 Feb 1900. In 1911, William was in Wereham, army pensioner, aged 72. He died in 1913. Jane is buried in the churchyard. I haven't found William's grave.
