George and Eliza BRUCE

George was born in 1867 in Wereham, Norfolk. Married Eliza COUSINS (born in Thorrington, Essex) in Camberwell in 1893. In 1901 they were running the "Three Blackbirds" pub on Broad St, Ely.

George and Eliza's family left England (from Liverpool) aboard the "Empress of Ireland", on 7 Oct 1909, bound for Quebec. The journey took 8 days. On October 14, 1909 Canadian newspapers in Quebec reported that the Empress of Ireland liner had punctured her hull after hitting a submerged object on the St. Lawrence River. She managed to reach port safely and unload her passengers.

Died 19 Aug 1940.

George Edgar
Born Camberwell in 1894. Married Stella SARA. Daughter Stella Irene b. 1920. Sergeant George Edgar Bruce served with 3rd Division Ammunition Column (3 DAC) and the 221st Battalion from 1 Feb 1916 - 12 Mar 1918 during WW1, Regiment # 312018. Second wife was Edith SKERRITT (nee OVENDEN). George died in 1972.

Iva Mary
Born Ely in 1895. Married George William McDonald. Daughter Ruth Elva b. 1929. Died 1950.
Leslie Victor
Born Ely on 23 Feb 1900. Married Verbena TULP about 1925. Two daughters, and a son Leonard Lloyd. Second wife Shirley KEELING. Died 1976. (NB. This was Peggy's grandad)
Algernon Lennie
Born Ely in 1903. Married Maude ROONEY about 1947. Three sons, Ralph, Walter and Clifford. Died 1972.
Dennis Chiverton
Born Ely in 1906. Not married. Private Dennis C Bruce served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps (R.C.A.S.C.) WW11. Died 1964.
