John & Harriet SIMS - my 3x Gt grandparents

John and Harriet SIMS

(née BROWNING)

John SIMS was born c 1806 in Burley Hants,

Circumstantial evidence leads me to believe he may well have been part of the smuggling that was rife in the New Forest in the early/mid 19th century. The SIMS brothers' wives were mostly listed as head of household on the census.

NB: In 1851, he has recently been discovered to be a prisoner in Hants County Prison(aged 45-dealer in poultry).(to be followed up)

John died in Oct 1884, and was buried in Burley on Oct 11th aged 78.

Harriet BROWNING was bap. 30 Apr 1809 in Timberscombe, Somerset. Her parents were John and Mary BROWNING (née CALLOWAY).

Harriet would have been just 14 when she had an illegitimate daughter- Harriet Matilda BROWNING, and may well account for her journey out of Somerset.

Harriet died in March 1893, and was buried in Burley on 1 Apr aged 81.

John and Harriet were married by banns in

Ringwood church, Hants

on 25th Jan 1827

Lydia TANNER & Moses TANNER

(Lydia is nee SIMS)

Their children were:
Harriet Matilda BROWNING
