Richard and Sarah Elizabeth

WEEDEN

(nee DOWNES)

Richard WEEDEN was born in Southwark, Surrey on 13th Jan. 1822, son of George and Catherine WEEDEN (nee PERME).

He was a cooper by trade, and at the age of 13 started his apprenticeship with Messrs Evans & Lascelles of Gt Guildford St.

In 1841, Richard(15) was an apprentice living at home with mother Catherine(60), and sister? Susanna(30) at Townsend Yard, Southwark St Saviour.*

**Recently discovered though my cousin Simon, that Richard was employed as a cooper on the Henrietta, a whaling ship, circa 1849-51.

The Henrietta (State Library of Victoria)

He made barrels for the whale oil. and kept a diary. [Diary from the collection of his Grandaughter the late Winifred Kate Weeden]. His website with lots of information, including scans of the diary pages is here.**

1851 census-despite long searches, he is not to be found. So, perhaps still at sea?

Richard died at the age of 69 on 16th May 1892 of typhoid fever.

Sarah Elizabeth DOWNES was born in Southwark in 1831, daughter of James and Mary DOWNES(nee BLISSETT).

Her father was a hairdresser, according to Sarah's marriage certificate.

I have searched for Sarah in 1841 and 1851, The closest match in 1841, is as a 10 yr old in Southwark. In 1851, she *may* be the 20 year old servant in Southwark St George.

Sarah died at the age of 70 on 5th July 1901 of chronic bronchitis.
