Stephen John and Elizabeth BAXTER

(née TAYLOR)

stephenStephen John BAXTER was born on 25 May 1765 to Boaz and Frances BAXTER in Helpringham, Lincs.

S. John (which seems to be what he went by) was a man of fairly high standing in the community. He was listed as Churchwarden 1796-1833, Surveyor of highways and interior drainage (paid for service), and overseer for Poors land.

NB. Recently found living in Islington in 1841 and Hackney in 1851, [thanks to cousin Steve.] He died in Hackney in Sep qtr 1853, at the grand age of 88.

elizabethElizabeth TAYLOR was born in 1767 in Helpringham, Lincs. (bp. 17 Sep 1767-IGI) to Thomas & Elizabeth TAYLOR (née PRESGRAVE)

 

Have yet to find her death date, but now know it to be before 1841.

The miniature paintings displayed above belong to my cousin Nancy Shilcock. I am thrilled to be able to
include them here. A label on the back of Elizabeth's painting states "Robt Wm Baxter, the gift
of his mother 3 Feb 1818"

The marriage record states:

Stephen John Baxter and Elizabeth Taylor, both of this parish, married in this church by Licence this 20th Day of Nov 1791, Thos Mitchinson- Curator

In the presence of John Presgrave and Thos Taylor all parties signed their names:

They had 9 children all born in Helpringham,Lincs.

John Boaz b 1791. Married Ann CALVERT in 1817.
Francis Thomas 1792-1877. In Gosberton in 1851 (married lodger, but no sign of his wife). Was buried in Helpringham on 6th Feb 1877.
Joseph Stephen b 1793. Married Rebecca from Donington. In Newark in 1851. Widowed by 1861. Children Harriett, Amelia, Henry, In Helpringham by 1871.
Robert William b 1795. Original owner of the portraits (see top of page).

Recently found living in Islington in 1841, and in Hackney in 1851 & 1861.(unmarried). Died Mar qtr 1867, Hackney.

Edward Bee 1798-1871. Schoolteacher in Helpringham. In Helpringham in 1841 and 1861. After he retired from teaching he becaame the registrar for births and deaths.
Frances Elisabeth 1800-1866. Married William SHILCOCK in 1818. They were my 4x gt g'parents. Click here for more.

Recently found living in Islington in 1841, and in Hackney in 1851 & 1861.(unmarried)

*In Helpringham church there is a stone memorial set amongst the flagstones to R.A.Baxter dated 24 Aug 1802.

This looks to be where Richard Allen is buried.
