EGGER HISTORY


The EGGER story begins with Johannes Egger, born to Johannes and Elisabeth (Schärer) Egger. He was baptized April 5, 1840.

Johannes Egger married Elisa Sägesser, who was born to Johann and Maria (Rhyn) Sägesser of Bützberg and baptized in Aarwangen on July 18, 1845. Elisa died November 21, 1900 in Switzerland. After the death of Elisa, Johannes Egger immigrated to the United States aboard the ship SS La Champagne, arriving in the port of New York on August 10, 1903. He migrated to Platte County, Nebraska, where several of his children were already living. Johannes died in Platte County on December 5, 1904 and is buried at Potter's Field in Columbus, Nebraska.

According to records at the Civil Registry, children born to Johannes and Elisa were:

1. Ida Emma Egger, born March 27, 1863 and baptized April 12, 1863 at Gunstatten, married Josef Zücher of Frubscacher (as recorded in the church book at Hangenau).


2. Gottfried Egger, born April 18, 1864, and baptized May 22, 1864 at Hunstatten. He married Lina Schweller-Steiner of Luterbach on April 21, 1895 at Luterbach.
3. Julia Egger, born March 4, 1866, was baptized March 18 of that year. She married Peter Allenberg on March 14, 1887 at Soloturn.
4. Julius Cäsar Egger was born April 6, 1867, and baptized April 28, 1867. According to his obituary, he came to the United States in 1889 and since that time lived in the Columbus, Nebraska area. He married Mary Jenny on February 22, 1894 in Columbus. Mrs. Egger died in 1936.

Julius was a member of the Evangelical and Reformed church and farmed in Platte and Butler counties.

Julius died February 25, 1952 at the age of 84. He was survived by 11 of his 13 children: William of Billings, Mont.; Ernst of Julesburg, Col.; Caesar of Lemoncove, Calif.; Julius and Walter of Los Angeles; Emil of Humphrey; Milton of Silver Springs, Md.; Mrs. Fred Schwank, Mrs. Arthur Heibel, Mrs. Arthur Schwank, and Bert Egger, all of Columbus. Two sons preceded him in death, Fred in December, 1950, and Julius, jr.

Other survivors included: two brothers, Moritz of Columbus and Gudo of Switzerland; five sisters, Mrs. Emma Zurcher and Mrs. Julia Allenbach, both of Switzerland, Mrs. Frieda Schwaller of Milwaukee, Wis., Mrs. Fred Boesiger and Mrs. Lena Mueller, both of Columbus.


5. Ida Egger, born August 21, 1868, was baptized on September 6th. She married Joh. Calsiger on January 11, 1890.
6. Elise Egger, born February 14, 1870 and baptized March 13, 1870, was married at Luterbach on June 7, 1891 to Joseph Stuni, a farm laborer of Luterbach.
7. Wilhelmina Egger was born February 9, 1872 and baptized March 17, 1872. According to her obituary published in the Columbus paper, Minnie immigrated to the United States at age 19 (approximately 1891). She married Fredrick Wilhelm Boesiger on December 5, 1899 in Platte County, Nebraska. Children born to Fred and Minnie were: Lena; Fredrick W. (m. Edna Nauenburg); Hulda Martha; Helen (m. Byron Weber); and Louis. Minnie Boesiger died July 21, 1953 and Fred on September 2, 1958.
8. Hans Oskar Egger, born August 14, 1873, was baptized September 14. He died July 29, 1914.
9. Wilhelm Egger, born August 25 and baptized September 17, 1875, died June 2, 1879 about 8:30 a.m.
10. Guido Egger, born October 6, 1876 married Flüry(?) Luise of Luterbach. He did not immigrate.
11. Ernst Egger was born at Vorstadt on October 26, 1878 at 11:30 in the evening. He immigrated to the U.S. with his brother, Moritz, and sisters, Frieda and Lina, in 1901. He moved to Oregon about 1936.
12. Frieda Egger was born at Rindgesse on April 21, 1880 at 11:00 p.m. She immigrated to the United States in 1901; and married Alfred Schwaller on August 10, 1903 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Two known children were Earl A. (born June 1, 1905) and Gladys E. (born March 26, 1907). It is believed Frieda was still living in Milwaukee in 1951.
13. Lina Egger was born at Vorstadt locally on August 22, 1881 about 2 in the afternoon. Johannes Egger was reportedly a shoemaker at that time.

Lina (also spelled Lena) immigrated with her siblings, Moritz, Ernst, and Frieda, aboard the ship SS La Champagne, arriving in New York on September 1, 1901. Their brother, Julius, was already living in Platte County at that time.

She married Samuel Traugott Müller (Americanized to Mueller) of Murgenthal on September 12, 1905 at Columbus, Nebraska. Witnesses to the marriage were Fritz Staub and Rosa Mueller.

Lena and Samuel Müller were the parents of six children: Lillian Martha (m. Earl Bisson); Edward Otto (m. Delila Miller and Martha Lutjeluesche); Hulda Pauline (m. William Klink); Helen Marie (m. Gottlieb Abegglen); Lawrence Floyd (m. Marian Kamm); and Walter Emil (m. Mary Jane Engel).

Lena died September 26, 1961 at the age of 80 years and is buried at Roselawn Cemetery in Columbus, Nebraska, next to her husband, Samuel.


14. Moritz Egger was born at Schnurhof on June 16, 1883 about 11 a.m. He immigrated to the United States in September, 1901, with his siblings, Ernst, Lina and Frieda. He left the area and spent seven years in Oregon. On June 21, 1913, he married Ida Houser in Polk County, Nebraska. Their children were: Martha; Walter (m. Lorraine Ewert); Earl (m. Kathleen Tanky); Elmer (m. Elva Krumland); Herbert (m. Regina Ebner); and Harold (m. Ellen Wollberg). Moritz died about July 9, 1963 in Columbus, Nebraska. Among the brothers and sisters preceding him in death were Julius Egger of Columbus, Mrs. Fred (Minnie) Boesiger of Oconee and Mrs. Sam (Lena) Mueller of Columbus. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Martha Egger of Columbus; one grandchild; and his parents.
15. Martha Egger, born in Schnurhof on September 5, 1884 about 4 in the afternoon, died on September 27, 1884 at 7 a.m.
16. Alfred Egger was born in Claunevain on July 8, 1887 at noon. He died October 26, 1887 about 8 a.m.
