OUR LINEAGE SOCIETIES
The National Society
of the
Daughters of the American Revolution
NSDAR is a volunteer, women's non-profit organization
dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing
America's future through better education for children...for any woman 18
years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can
prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution (one who provided
service or direct assistance in achieving America's independence.
The following names of my ancestors are those who have qualified
or are eligible ancestors according to NSDAR's standards:
David Beebe (Sr. and Jr.) Quartermaster Sgt.
from CT; Israel Calkins, Private from CT; Roswell Calkins,
Private from CT; Jacob Loch, Private from PA; Ichabod Terrell,
Private from CT; Oliver Terrell, Private from CT; Jonas Whitney,
Deacon from OH; and, Elisha Wilmot, Private from CT.
All of these ancestors' eligibility is based on their proven
descent to the woman requesting membership. If you are interested in additional

The Daughters of Union Veterans
of the Civil War 1861-1865
The membership of this organization is limited to daughters, granddaughters, and all great-granddaughters of honorably discharged soldiers and sailors who served in the Union Army, Navy or Marine Corps and Revenue Cutter Service during the Rebellion of 1861-1865, and those who died or were killed while serving in the armed services of the Union between April 12, 1861 and April 9,1865. The list of soldiers that I am directly descended from are Thomas Jefferson Lough and Bailey Barnes.

Sons of the American Revolution
The NSSAR is a historical, educational and patriotic non-profit, United States 501(c)3 corporatio that seeks to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom; an appreciation for true patriotism; a respect for our national symbols; the value of American citizenship; and the unifying force of e pluribus unum that has created, from the people of many nations, one nation and one people.
NSSAR is naturally for men just as NSDAR is designed for women descendants.
The National Huguenot
Society
The NHS is a patriotic, historic and educational organization, designed to perpetuate the memory, the spirit, and the deeds of the men and women in France known as Huguenots, who ere persecuted in the 16th and 17th Centuries because of their adherance to the basic tenets of the Protestant faith and their devotion to liberty, and who emigrated either directly or through other countries to North America and contributed by their character and ability to the development of the United States.
The one ancestor who qualifies for this honor is our John Lewis, husband of Margaret Lynn, who was one of the first 100 pioneers in the Virginia Colony, notably settling the town of Stanton. There are several historical books which state that he was a French Huguenot.

The NSCDA is an organization dedicated to furthering an appreciation of our national heritage through historic preservation, patriotic service and educational projects.

of Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century
The NSCDSC is a patriotic, genealogical and heraldic society of women who trace their ancestors in this country to the Founders who settled the thirteen original colonies before 1701. We have several branches who could qualify for this society. John Lewis is one of these. The Butler branches et al (Beebe, Caulkin, Wilmot, Whitney, Lyman, Gladding) have several resources who were early settlers of Connecticut , not only qualify for this society but many others which are specific to that general area.

Royal and Noble Anccestry
The NSRNA is a sponsoring organization for The Society of Charlemagne Ancestry, The Society of Magna Carta Ancestry and The Society of Royal Bastard Ancestry. I know that most of my Wilson cousins and myself qualify for the latter society, but at this time have not shown an interest there. I do not know if we are qualified for the first two societies in this branch. For the Butler family branch, they are qualified several ways for all three societies. The Cecil family has been highly disputed. The Witherspoon descendants have yet to prove Alexander's connection to the Scots of renonwn and await proof of that link.
Scottish Clans
Through the Wilson family line, we are eligible for membership in a number of Scottish Clans. My son wears the tartan of Clan Gunn, while I sport the Royal Stuart plaid. We are also eligible for membership in Clans Colquhoun, MacKay, Buchanan and Graham. Once you've proved a direct descendancy, it becomes a personal choice of where you feel most "at home". Important qualities in a member are a love of bagpipes, a high tolerance for ale and haggis, an indomitable spirit and an admiration for the Olde Horse Thieves who were are ancestors. These Clans all have websites, both in the USA and in the homeland of Scotland...just "Google" them! Perhaps we'll see you in Estes Park, Colorado at the Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Highland Festival in September. It's the highlight of my year when we get to go there.
