LETTER FROM PETER ROBINSON:

“In choosing the emigrants, the instructions that they should be farmers, able to make good settlers and without the means of supporting themselves in Ireland was strictly adhered to.  In one particular - I was induced to deviate in a few instances which was in admitting a small number above the age of forty-five - they are however farmers of superior intelligence and character to the other emigrants and appear from their experience in agriculture and their  greater practical knowledge capable of giving a good example to the other settlers.”

Notwithstanding murmurs were heard and accusations were made: Article in the Cork Mercantile Chronicles of May 6, 1825 caused Peter R. some distress.  Consequently he invited on board the ‘Mayor of Cork and Sir Anthony Perrier - that by the most minute investigation they might ascertain how far the settlers on board of their ships corresponded with the description of persons who I was instructed to select.’

Letters of Recommendation:

Denis Hurley and Jeremiah Connors are the persons whom I recommended.  I certify to my knowledge of their honest and good conduct and recommend them as proper subjects to be forwarded to Canada.”  Lord Bantry, Mar. 1825

Shea (O'Shea):

“The bearer Thomas Shea lived as tenant to my cousin Bryan Sheehy - County Limerick, desirous of emigrating to Canada with his family is I believe a proper subject to be taken under the prescribed regulations.  William Sheehy, Bloomfield near Cork.

To Sir Anthony Perrier,
‘He dealt with my father for many years and always conducted himself with the greatest propriety and honesty. He lived for a long time as tenant to my uncle M. Sheehy in the county of Limerick.’ Chas. O. Mayla

I know the gentleman whose names are signed to the annexed recommendations to be highly respectable and have no doubt of the accuracy of their statement.’ Anthony Perrier Magistrate Cork, May 14, 1825

Here's to the land of the shamrock so green,
Here's to each lad and his darlin colleen,
Here's to the ones we love dearest and most.
May God bless old Ireland, that's this Irishman's toast!
