Hi! My name is Nancy Cluff Siders. I live in Roswell, New Mexico, the alien capitol of the world. No, I have never seen one. ;) Do I believe...? There are a lot of people who do believe in UFO's but I'll need to see one before I make that kind of commitment.
I have worked in the computer field for nearly thirty years; mostly in educational institutions both in Ohio and New Mexico. Working with my husband Bill for 23 years, we've kept employees happy getting their paychecks and grades on time at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio as well as for the faculty and staff at the Military Institute in Rswell, New Mexico more recently. At Roswell besides the paychecks and grades, academic computing on campus was included. It is a requirement of most cadets to have a computer. Support for 1200 users (cadets, faculty and staff) is demanding on a staff of ten. As Manager of Information Services' Operations, my mission was to keep everyone happy. From January 2002 until our retirement effective 1 January 2007, we have converted 25 years of administrative software development to a new platform as well as to new software. :}
I grew up on a farm in Highland County, Ohio with my older sister, Janet and younger brother, Donnie. Our parents were David Newton McBride (Newt) and Marian Inez (McKAY) CLUFF. Janet married Claude BACH and had a family of seven children. Donnie married Dianne (SCHRAW) and have a lovely home, swimming pool and boat in Florida. The old home place sits vacant now. That old house is not what it used to be. It sits alone where much activity was the rule in its past. Update 2006: We found that the home place has been renovated and placed on the housing market. My former bedroom under the front dormer windows is now a bathroom with a Whirlpool. Who'da thunk!! LOL!!!
Something dear to my heart is the preservation of family history. The latest family get together occurred at Der Dutchman in Waynesville, Ohio on Saturday, 20 May 2006 for breakfast.
I have been working on the genealogy of my parents for nearly 40 years. I have visited The Washburn Cemetery in Brushcreek Township of Highland County, Ohio four times where at least seven and possibly eight of my ancestors are buried. My first visit was in 1966, again in the 1970's but it was in terrible shape the very last time (until summer, 2008) we were there in the 1980's. You can see the progressive deterioration from the photos of the Washburn Cemetery on a web site I created several years ago. Several members of the family have been attempting to influence the clean up of the cemetery. Being at such a distance away and not knowing the present condition, I fear it may be too late with what the size of the trees were in the 1980's. NOTE: New photos!! My nephews Robert and David Bach have now visited the cemetery on Sunday, 25 June 2006 and have started action to get a roadway bush hogged and the cemetery cleared. The township trustees promised to get a chain link fence erected and the cemetery cleared and they have done it! We visited the cemetery in June 2008 and was very relieved. However, a log has fallen over the roadway, covered with poison ivy. Trees are beginning to grow again. Vigilance against the wilderness will need to be maintained. Elizabeth Countryman Washburn's tombstone which is laying on the ground was nearly covered by an ant hill.
My Mother's family were from New York. Just as I described in the paragraph above that many of my father's people are buried in the Washburn Cemetery, many of my mother's folks are buried at the Griffins Mills Cemetery. I have built a web site of cemeteries in New York.
My husband and I have three grown children and five grandchildren. So, I have an alias - Nana. Our three children, Melissa, Colleen and Craig are scattered across these wide United States but we get together as often as possible.
In 1995, I discovered the Internet. I had already been doing genealogy research since 1967 but my hobby exploded with the capabilities of the Internet. I collected correspondents rapidly and in 1996, I created the COUNTRYMAN-L Mailing List on RootsWeb to manage my distribution list easier. Little did I know that I had created a routine that would be hard to break. In 1997, I created the SACKETT-L list; the LETSON-L list in 1998, the SIDERS-L list in July, 2000; adopted the CLUFF-L list in 2000 or 2001 and created the MCKAY-ELKENNY-L in January of 2003. In September of 2003, a group of SACKETT-L subscribers joined me in forming The Sackett Family Association (TSFA) at Salt Lake City. Bill went along and enjoyed himself immensely researching his own surname at the Family History Library. I turned the SACKETT and TSFA Mailing Lists over on 3 June 2009.
I have created web pages for most of these lists to share the subscriber's profiles with each other. At first I updated them monthly but as the number of lists grew, I changed the update periods to four times a year (summer, fall, winter, spring). I've attempted to drop these pages but the subscribers apparently prefer that I keep them going. :)
Please feel free to explore the web pages of the surname lists I manage on RootsWeb: |
-----------------------------------------Mailman Tips RootsWeb converted their list management from SmartList during the month of September 2006 to a software named Mailman. Mailman Tips is a collection of information for both subscribers and/or list admins from the LIST_UPDATE and LISTOWNERS listservs about Mailman. |
Other surnames for which I have not created mailing lists nor web pages but would be very interested in corresponding with interested fellow researchers are:

Since my retirement and during the surgery of my husband Bill, I have become hooked on doing Sudoku puzzles. Here is the Sudoku of the Day! Enjoy!
