Ephraim Wales Bull

  • Born: 4 Mar 1806, Boston MA
  • Died: 26 Sep 1895, Concord MA

  General notes:

Gold beater

  Events in his life were:

  • He worked from circa 1824 to 1840 as a gold beater in Dorchester MA first as a journeyman, then in his own shop after 1826. Compelled by health to move to the country, he began spending more and more time in horticultural experiments. By 1850, he had produced a stable hybrid of a local wild grape, which he named "Concord." It and other varieties he developed brought him fame, but little money and he died as an impoverished invalid in the Concord Home for the Aged. His tombstone reads "He Sowed, Others Reaped"
