Fred Cason, 73, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Fred Cason, 73, passed away Monday (Oct. 15, 2001). Mr. Cason retired from A.F.G. in 1984. He was the managing partner of B.C. Realty. He was also a member of Rotary and Downtown Kingsport Assoc. Mr. Cason sponsored the Fred Cason Accounting Scholarship Fund at E.T.S.U. He was a former board member of Tusculum College. Mr. Cason was an avid golfer, fisherman and world traveler. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Gladys Cason. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mary Lou Cason, Kingsport; daughter, Pamela Cason, Wichita, Kans.; son, Fred Cason Jr., Wheeling, W.Va.; grandchildren, Eric Cason, Erin Connelly, Heather Connelly and Kelly Connelly; sisters, Janice Cottam, Grove, Okla., and Jeanette Wilson, Dallas, Tex.; brother, Roland Cason, Yukon, Okla.; several nieces and nephews. Bob Castle, 68, Wabash, Ind.
WABASH, Ind. - Bob Castle, 68, died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Wabash County Hospital in Wabash, Ind. He was born August 3, 1933 in Dungannon, Va., the son of the late Woodrow Castle and Hartense Lucas Castle. He married Mary Evelyn Sluss in Wise, Va., on March 2, 1957. She died May 23, 1987. He retired in 1990 as a maintenance worker for Fisher Body in Marion, Ind. He was an Army veteran, and was a member of the Wabash Moose Lodge, the Wabash American Legion Post No. 15, the Wabash Eagles Lodge, the United Auto Workers Union, Marion, and the Silver Lake Sportsman Club. He was an avid coon hunter. Surviving are his sons, Joel Dean (Julie) Castle and Terry Castle, both of Wabash; daughters, Cathy Castle and Mrs. Kenneth (Debbie) Craig, both of Wabash; brothers, Ervin (Bonnie) Castle, Roanoke, Ind., Richard Castle, Wabash, and Ray Castle, Kingsport; 11 grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; three stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Grandstaff-Hentgen, Manchester Avenue Chapel, Wabash. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Roger M. Charles, 48, Church Hill.

CHURCH HILL - Superintendent Roger M. Charles, 48, went to be with the Lord Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center after an extended illness. He was the devoted and faithful pastor of the Greater Love Church of God in Christ ministry in Johnson City for nine years. He served as a superintendent of the Church of God in Christ, Johnson City District. He served the community well in various ministries, especially the prison ministry. He was employed by T.R.W. Inc. for 28 years. He was a devoted, faithful and loving husband and father. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Charles Sr.; sister, Shelia Marie Charles; and uncle, Fredrick Douglas Charles. He has a warm and loving family which includes his wife, Terry Charles, of the home; daughter, Tanisha Charles of Johnson City; son, Aaron Charles of Smyrna, Ga.; mother, Georgia Charles; brothers and sister, Edward (Charlotte) Charles Jr., Georgia Ruth (Earnest) Easterly, Christopher Roy (Jackie) Charles and Broderick (Earleen) Charles, all of Rogersville; special aunt, Mrs. Chassie Venable of Baltimore, Md.; nieces and nephews, Toni, Tracy and Kevin Kincaid, Jennifer and Janelle Charles, Jacquetha (Shamari) White, Tara and Stacy Charles, Tyler and Tanner Charles; a host of loving and caring family members, friends, his church congregation of Greater Love Church of God in Christ in Johnson City; special pastoral friends, Bishop Aaron Redd of Johnson City, Superintendent J. Rev. Lloyd Cook, 74 Jonesville, Va.

JONESVILLE Va. - The Rev. Lloyd Everette Cook, 74, entered into rest Monday (Oct. 15, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. He was a Missionary Baptist, pastoring different churches both in Virginia and Tennessee. He also taught the Book of Revelations in numerous churches. He was a sergeant in the tank battalion in the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by his parents, Murphy and Lula (Shockley) Cook; two brothers, John and Vester; one daughter, Linda; and one son, Lloyd. He leaves his wife, Imogene; two sons, Roger and Robert, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Ronnie Jones, Mulberry Valley, Tenn.; one special granddaughter, Sarah; one brother, Kyle Cook, Mooresburg; one sister-in-law, Joy Cook, Mooresburg; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and relatives. Henry C. Fleenor, 79, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Services for Henry Clay Fleenor, 79, who went peacefully to be with his Lord Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001), will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Teague officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors conducted by the VFW Charles DeWitt Post No. 3382. Joyce L. (J.L.) Harris, 89, Kingsport.

KINGSPORT - Joyce Lovell (J.L.) Harris, 89, 530 Fairview Ave., living at 1025 Haw Ridge Road in Piney Flats, died Monday (Oct. 15, 2001) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born in Honaker, Va., in May, 1912, and moved to Kingsport in 1942. He worked at Holston Defense Corp. during the war, and later at Kingsport Hardware and Dobyns-Taylor until his retirement. He was a member of the First Broad Street United Methodist Church and a member of Dobyn's Men Class. He was preceded in death by one son, Bill Austin Harris; mother and father, Mary Jane Pendergrass Harris and Edward M. Harris; four brothers, Earl, Aubrey, Ellis and Eldridge; two sisters, Eileen Call and Edna Jackson. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Mary Ellen Stump Harris; one son, J. Marvin Harris and daughter-in-law Rebecca Susan Harris; daughter-in-law, Jane McKamey Harris; three grandchildren, Kent Harris, Kingsport, Jeffrey M. Harris, Port Charlotte, Fla., and Rebecca H. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mary Kinnett. Nath B. Lane, 92, Duffield, Va.

DUFFIELD, Va. - Nath B. Lane, 92, of Route 1, went to be with the Lord on Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a period of declining health. He had retired from the Southern Railroad. He had worked as a coal miner and was a farmer. He was widely known for his sled-making. Mr. Lane was a born- again Christian. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was dearly loved by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Lane and Cosby Estep Lane; his first wife, Polly Byrd Lane; a brother, Isaac Lane; two sisters, Pearlie Herron and Myrtle Powers. ROGERSVILLE - Sallie Kate Mallett, 87, West Carters Valley, went to be with the Lord Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center. She was a member of Harned Chapel Methodist Church, but attended Loneoak Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Edith Trentham; father, Ernest Trentham; son, Larry E. Mallett; brother, J.A. Trentham; and sisters, Edith Blazer and Glenna Hawk. Surviving are her husband, James E. CHURCH HILL - Edna Deana Messick, 90, formerly of 109 Kay Street, Church Hill, died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at Sunbridge-Brookhaven Nursing Home. She had been a resident of Brookhaven for the past four years. She was born in Dungannon, Va. Mrs. Messick was of the Methodist faith. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Messick; her parents, John and Mary Gennie Pippin; three daughters, Ruth Barrett, Mary Barrett and Phyllis Messick; three brothers, Ernest Pippin, Herbert Pippin and Clarence Pippin; three sisters, Clara Pippin, Juanita Robinette and Estell Lester. Harry "Tom'' Nelms, 75, Lakeland, Fla.

LAKELAND, Fla. - Harry Thomas "Tom'' Nelms Jr., 75, died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at Lakeland Regional Medical Center of cancer. Born March 7, 1926 in Kingsport, he came to Lakeland in July, 1982 from Daytona, Fla. He was a funeral director and was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Nelms was a member of Polk County H.O.G Chapter 0687, International Brotherhood of Motorcycles, Veterans of Foreign War Post 6925 and the American Legion Post 4. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harry Nelms Sr. and Lillie Hale Nelms. Surviving are his wife, Dianne Nelms of Lakeland, Fla.; son, Harry T. Nelms III of Sarasota, Fla.; daughter, Forrest Rose Nelms of Sarasota, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister, Peg Nelms Stelling of Daytona Beach, Fla.; stepson, Dewey McLendon of S. Candace Ramey, 26, Norton, Va.

NORTON, Va. - Candace Renee Gibson Ramey, 26, died Monday (Oct. 15, 2001). She was a loving mother, daughter and sister. Her life revolved around her baby girl. A person you could always count on, she was loved by all who knew her and always had a smile that touched peoples' hearts. One of her proudest moments was becoming "State Queen of Tops VA 610" of Wise for losing the most weight. She was a 1993 graduate of J.J. Kelly High School. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Willard "Sonny" Gibson Jr.; maternal grandfather, Ira Ingle; aunt, Linda Faye Jackson. Emmette C. Roberts, 83, Pound, Va.

POUND, Va. - Emmette C. Roberts, 83, passed away Monday (Oct. 15, 2001) at his home in Pound. He was a retired coal miner, former employee of Old Ben Coal Co., and a member of UMWA Local No. 8017. He was of the Protestant faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice (Ruby) Roberts, Nov. 23, 1997; one sister, Mary Muncy; and four brothers, Fred, John, Ira and George Roberts. Surviving are three daughters, Clara Gilley, Faye Van Huss and Anna Ollerton, all of Pound; two sisters, Cosby Hagerman, Glasgow, Ky., and Albertie Muncy, Norton, Va.; one brother, Arthur Roberts, Norton, Va.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Laura Robinson, Pennington Gap, Va.

PENNINGTON GAP, Va. - Mrs. Laura Matilda Fugate Robinson died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at the Carter Hall Nursing Home. She was born on April 20, 1905 in Claiborne County, Tenn., to the late Dan Fugate and Martha Brooks. At an early age, Laura accepted Christ as her savior and was a devout Christian. She was a member of the Hoop Creek Baptist Church in Claiborne County. She taught Sunday School at Beech Hill Baptist Church for several years and faithfully attended Wells Chapel A.M.E. Zion until her health began to fail. Laura was a humble and virtuous woman in her Christian living. She had lived in Lee County for over 70 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Robinson in 1947; a daughter, Virginia in 1999; and by four sisters and one brother. MOUNT CARMEL - Harold (Bucky) Douglas Salyers, 58, of Ohio Ave., departed this life early Monday (Oct. 15, 2001) at his residence. Born in Scott County, Va., he was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Chemical Company with 27 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a son, Todd Salyers; his parents, Charlie Salyers and Mattie Larkey Salyers; sister, Nadine Robinette; and brothers, Walmer Salyers and James Salyers. Surviving are his wife, Jo Davidson Salyers, Mount Carmel; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Danny Housewright, Mount Carmel; son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Tami Salyers, Kingsport; grandchildren, Josh Salyers, Logan Salyers, Danielle Housewright and Isaac Housewright; sisters, Mary Ann Olinger, Mount Carmel, and Virginia Bledsoe, Omar, W.Va.; brothers, Charles Salyers, Church Hill, Don Salyers, Xenia, Ohio, Fred Salyers, Wheelersburg, Ohio, Carl Salyers, Hiltons, Va.; sister-in-law, Betty Salyers, Chesapeake, Va.; several nieces and nephews. COEBURN, Va. - Barbara Allen Sanders, 57, a loving wife and mother, died Monday (Oct. 15, 2001) at her residence in Coeburn, Va. Mrs. Sanders was a member of the Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harve and Blanch Rutherford; a son, Randall Sanders; and a brother, Gary Rutherford. KINGSPORT - Glynn Franklin Tyler, 67, 1621 D. Street, died unexpectedly in Kingsport. He was born in McRoberts, Ky., and moved to Kingsport in 1952. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from the construction trade. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bryan Tyler Sr. and Lucinda Day Tyler; one sister, Tina Bradley; and one brother, Bryan Tyler Jr. Surviving are two sisters, Betty Ann Horne, Amarillo, Tex., and Imogene Kulczyk, Mt.
